Marnie or Esme

Phoebeboo · 24/05/2020 14:11

We always said if we had a little girl her name would be Marnie but we had a boy first and his name is Sonny.
I am now pregnant with a girl and wondering if Sonny and Marnie is to simular to work together because of the end sounds.
Other half likes Esme which I also like.
Which would you choose?

I'm not mad about either of them, Marnie makes me think of the Hitchcock film, and Esme has spelling and pronunciation issues. Esmée is the way I'd spell ot but you will get Esmé (french boy's name) Esmae, Esmay, Ezmae...
Marnie seems easier.

LotusClover · 24/05/2020 14:19

Esme is much nicer. I also think it goes better with Sonny.

Epigram · 24/05/2020 14:20

I like Esme better.

Shelley54 · 24/05/2020 14:39

Marnie is that awful woman from Geordie Shore...

Notajogger · 24/05/2020 14:46

You are right they sound a bit silly (or something) together. Esme is better.

merryhouse · 24/05/2020 14:56

I don't think they sound too similar. Besides, how often will the names be said together? They'll be in different school classes, different social groups, possibly different sports clubs - the only time it will even hint at being an issue is when someone asks you about your children.

Pick the name you like best. (but please don't put an accent on it...)

Mumma4262 · 24/05/2020 15:03

I much prefer Marnie.

Flymetothestars · 24/05/2020 15:06

I love love love Marnie.

I really would stick with using your favourite name. I think you'll regret choosing something else just because of the "e" sound at the end of Marnie.
Infact the E sound at the start of Esme isn't perfect as Sonny and Esme then merge together with the E sound in the middle.
Sonny and Marnie are gorgeous names! Esme just isn't as special as Marnie as there are so many E names , it just merged with all them.

If not how about Martha or Margot or Mabel (prefer Marnie though)

Flymetothestars · 24/05/2020 15:07

Love the meaning of Marnie "sparkling" or "shine" ☀️ 💎

daisypond · 24/05/2020 15:12

I’m not keen on either. Esme is so bland and looks wrongly spelled. Marnie is OK as short for Margaret but twee as a name in itself. I don’t like -ie diminutive names at all. Sonny and Marnie are too cutesy together with matching endings. If I had to pick, I’d go for Marnie. At least it’s not as bland as Esme.

RoaryMouth · 24/05/2020 15:15

I love both of these names. If Marnie is your fave use it. She'll be her own person with her own name, irrespective of what her brother is called.

LondonTowers · 24/05/2020 15:39

Totally agree with the "ee" endings for both children being too much. I'm probably being a fuss-pot but it would really bug me....

Sertchgi123 · 24/05/2020 15:42

Marnie is gorgeous.

Phoebeboo · 24/05/2020 15:52

Thank you everyone for your help! Great to see how many positive comments there are for Marnie.
Really like Martha and Margot too! It’s so hard finding something you both agree on!

Think I prefer Esme of the 2, was on my list for a long time. Marnie is nice too though and much less common I would have thought.

Edenember · 24/05/2020 16:12

I actually prefer the ‘ezmie’ Scottish pronounciation to the French also but I don’t think many people would concur with that x

sweetnosugar · 24/05/2020 16:18

Love Marnie. Its gorgeous!
Esme always has pronunciation issues, EsMAY.. EsME.

Aclh13 · 24/05/2020 17:01

Sometimes I think esme is too common and prefer marnie usually however Esme goes a lot better with sonny, rounds out the names and makes them seem classier. I have to agree above I'm deterred by the name because of Gshore

Flymetothestars · 24/05/2020 17:09

GShore isn't even on anymore and the vast vast majority of people didn't watch it. I did watch and thought Marnie was a nice girl.

20viona · 24/05/2020 17:10

Marnie. Esme is so common.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 24/05/2020 19:28

Marnie never sounds like a proper name to me, sounds very nicknamey...

Esme is really lovely.

Destroyedpeople · 24/05/2020 19:30

Love Marnie. There are not enough baby Marnies.

Aclh13 · 24/05/2020 20:04

@Flymetothestars I don't know what you were watching but you clearly weren't watching the right show if you thought she was "nice" she was known for being the mean girl and sleeping around , myself and a few friends (all a couple of years younger than the cast) loved the name but worried about the blatantly obvious negative associations.

elfran · 24/05/2020 21:44

I love Esme, it's a rare name that is equally cute on a little girl and elegant on an adult, without any alteration/nicknames. Marnie is just a bit lightweight in comparison.

That said, go with your favourite.

Carouselfish · 24/05/2020 22:22

Marnie. Esme always sounds like a sneeze to me.
