Hello all, me and DH are due to have a son on 12th June (our first child) and in terms of names, we both really like the names Joseph/Joe and Samuel/Sam (Joseph slightly more) but we were wondering whether Joseph Samuel or Samuel Joseph flows/sounds better in your opinions? The surname will be Jackson btw, and any other good name suggestions you have feel free to state I am open to new alternatives too! Cheers Smile

I love both names . Possibly Samuel is nicer.

However, Samuel Jackson? I think of the actor.

Glendaruel · 24/05/2020 13:18

Samuel Joseph sounds better I think. My parents had two names chosen for me but didn't know which way round until I was born, apparently I looked more like one name.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/05/2020 13:26

Both fine, I particularly love Joe.

Christine1992 · 24/05/2020 13:27

@eyesbiggerthanstomach cheers - I didn’t really remember the actor until you mentioned it so was worth pointing out, although they both have celeb associations (Joe Jackson was Michael Jackson’s dad or the singer from the 70s)

Or

Dan
Tom
Matt
Max

Lynda07 · 24/05/2020 13:28

I like both names either way around but depends on which suits the surname best.

Ninkanink · 24/05/2020 13:29

They’re about equal in terms of flow, IMO - both sound good, both are good first and middle names. So I’d wait and see which seems right for the baby when he’s here.

Shmithecat2 · 24/05/2020 13:29

Samuel Joseph flows better. Lovely name.

Ninkanink · 24/05/2020 13:30

Oh yes, that’s a good point. Pick the first name that sounds best with the surname since that is how it will most often be used.

Flymetothestars · 24/05/2020 13:30

I really really wouldn't worry about "flow" when 99.9999% of the time only the first name will be used
Pick the name you love most. Sounds like it's Joseph. Joseph Jackson is a great choice!

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 24/05/2020 13:32

Samuel L Jackson is still very current. I'd go for Joseph, but its lovely either way (my son is Samuel, Joseph was on the list but it doesn't go with our surname)

Christine1992 · 24/05/2020 13:35

@ThroughThickAndThin01 thanks for suggestions - I had thought of Joseph Matthew before but DH decided to rule that out. Also really love Tom and Dan, but my dad is Tom and cousin is Dan so wouldn’t be able to use

Samuel Joseph Jackson is lovely.

DontLookBackYappityYap · 24/05/2020 13:50

I love both the names but wouldn't pick either of them I'm afraid:

Joseph Jackson is a mouthful

Samuel Jackson, well, the actor.

I couldn't use my favourite name (Edward/Eddie) because my surname - was gutted

Ninkanink · 24/05/2020 13:59

Oh I’d missed the fact that the surname is Jackson...

Still think Samuel is just fine (when he’s little you might call him Sammy, when he older you’ll probably call him Sam, so it’s dissimilar enough to Samuel L. Jackson imo). Don’t particularly like Joseph Jackson, or Joe Jackson, or Joey Jackson.

So my vote is definitely for Samuel Joseph Jackson.

LotusClover · 24/05/2020 14:18

Wow that's funny, Samuel Joseph is my brother's name! Grin I think either is fine tbh, they both have a nice flow.

LondonTowers · 24/05/2020 15:50

Samuel Joseph Jackson sounds infinitely better IMO. Little Sammy for short Smile

Christine1992 · 24/05/2020 15:59

@Flymetothestars that’s a good point about the surname. I’m still open to more names - but I think me and DH prefer Joe/Joseph over Sam/Samuel as Sam can be a girls name also commonly, and we would prefer a solely masculine name over unisex one ideally, despite Sam being a good name too

Dauphinois · 24/05/2020 16:23

I love alliterative names so go for Joseph

EnglishGirlApproximately · 24/05/2020 16:26

I have a Samuel Joseph OP so I'm biased and think it's a lovely name. Most known as Sam or Sammy so the surname wouldn't be an issue. Smile

Flymetothestars · 24/05/2020 16:33

Me too @Dauphinois

moonset · 24/05/2020 16:35

Jo(e) can be a girls name too. I like alliterative names so I would choose Joseph Samuel. Lovely names both of them!

doughnutmuffin · 24/05/2020 16:37

I like both but prefer Joseph

Phoebeboo · 24/05/2020 16:38

Both are lovely but I prefer Samuel Joseph!

blancheduboiss · 24/05/2020 16:38

Samuel Joseph, but i’m biased here as that’s dp’s name Grin
