Hi! I have a ( nearly ) 2 year old daughter called Eleni, who has always been known as Leni and Len.
As much as those are her names and I love them, I really want to start calling her Nell or Nellie as a nickname.
Do you think this is unfair on her to have too many names , or does it seem weird if everyone else calls her Leni and Len and her mum calls her Nellie and Nell ( basically her original.nicknwmes backwards 😂)

I just love the name and think it suits her, and it is a nickname of her name anyway.....
Thanks

Len and Leni are so lovely! So is Nellie. Call her what you like, I call my son loads of different names! x

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 23/05/2020 17:41

The elephant?

whitesoxx · 23/05/2020 17:42

I call my kids lots of random things but I know of a baby Nellie and I really feel for her. Her surname is unusual too

Jasmineben · 23/05/2020 17:42

I’d assume she was Eleanor or Helena

Jojo19834 · 23/05/2020 17:46

I really like the name Nellie but it just immediately follows on with ‘the elephant’

LondonTowers · 23/05/2020 18:08

Nell and Nellie are both lovely, think the elephant thing is well in the past.

I think Nn's usually develop naturally and so if you are naturally inclined to call her Nell then just do it but the fact you are asking says to me it may not have developed naturally so may not stick....iyswim.

I have had loads of nicknames for my kiddies but only a couple have stuck :) and the one I mainly call my son is not used widely.... he doesn't seem to even notice.

Topseyt · 23/05/2020 18:14

I like Len or Leni, which you are currently using. They are lovely names.

Nellie though?? I don't like it and find it a very ugly sounding, and not just because of the connotation with elephants. So I would say please don't. Stay as you are.

Lollypop4 · 23/05/2020 18:17

Agree, I go straight to "Nellie the elephant" .

SE13Mummy · 23/05/2020 18:28

I know a 10 year old Nellie (nickname for Nell) and a 15 year old Nell (short for Eleanor). They're fabulous girls, full of character and the elephant thing is a non issue.

VanillaSugarr · 23/05/2020 18:31

Nellie is the name of a dog in an online webcomic which is very popular with the young ‘uns. My 12 year old called our puppy Nellie because of this.

From me, it’s a No but she is your daughter.

imalittlethrowaway · 23/05/2020 18:31

Not sure how Nellie is a nn for Eleni but if you think it suits her, go for it, that’s how nn develop! And I love the name Smile

Angel2702 · 23/05/2020 18:45

Kids end up with loads of nicknames. I love Nellie I was nicknamed Nellie as a kid. I would have called my eldest Ellen shortened to Nellie has he been a girl and Penelope shortened to Nellie if his brother had been a girl.

BillywilliamV · 23/05/2020 18:46

I have an Elinor, we call her Nellie.

lunar1 · 23/05/2020 18:47

I've got the song stuck in my head now 🤦🏻‍♀️

Pipandmum · 23/05/2020 18:50

I think of a horse! Whoa Nellie!

Blursula · 23/05/2020 19:24

I agree with pp that if you don’t naturally call her Nellie and you have to ask then it feels a bit forced. Len and Leni are so much prettier IMO

LotusClover · 23/05/2020 20:52

I agree with @Topseyt. Len and Leni are nice but Nellie is horrid, even without the elephant connotations.

mamablondie2 · 24/05/2020 18:23

Billie Faiers has a Nellie and maybe this is a generational thing (sorry) but I think of her rather than the elephant. I think Nel is cute also.

DramaAlpaca · 24/05/2020 18:25

I like Nell but Nellie isn't nice at all. Once you start using Nell, Nellie will be inevitable. Up to you of course.

peperethecat · 24/05/2020 22:04

Nellie the elephant packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus, off she went with a trumpety-trump, trump trump trump.

Yeah, makes me think of elephants and now a certain village idiot president.

wannabebump · 25/05/2020 08:27

I got called Nellie has a kid by my Dad and it's stuck, he'll say to my Mum "Nellie is on the phone" etc even now and I'm 30+ haha!! Elephant thing has never been an issue and Nellie is definitely not a nickname associated with my first name!

Lunaballoonabear · 25/05/2020 08:34

Dd is called Ellen, which is nelle backwards so we often call her nell

OnABeachSomewhere · 25/05/2020 10:07

I like Nell but not Nellie.

Miriel · 25/05/2020 10:16

Makes me think of elephants too.

Saying that, I was expecting to read this thread and have to argue that 'Nellie' shouldn't go on a child's birth certificate. Eleni is lovely, and I know plenty of people who go by different nicknames in different situations. I'd say it's fine, as long as you're prepared for the possibility that when she's a bit older she'll decide she wants to be known by one in particular.
