Hi all,

I picked a name that I really like, it's very old fashioned but I think it's coming back.

I just hate when people bluntly tell me that they don't like it or that's an awful name. I tell them the name and not ask their opinion. Am I just too sensitive?

Anyway, now I do ask your opinion, what do you think of Ronnie - Ron - Ronald or possibly Ronan?

I like a proper solid name not new wave made-up. I'm Slavic DH is British, I'd like a name that would work in both countries or one English and another Slavic, like Ronald Alexander.

Other options that I don't like as much are
Anton
Vincent - Vinnie
Alexander - Sasha

Thoughts?

I don't much like Ronald, Ron or Ronnie but I do like Ronan.

Not keen on Anton but like Vincent and Alexander.

AntiHop · 23/05/2020 16:35

Alexander/sasha is one of my favourite boys names.

ClementineTangerine · 23/05/2020 16:36

First things first I wouldnt tell people IRL what your names are.

Secondly, Ronnie is most definitely already back - i have 3 friends/acquaintances with Ronnie's under the age of 2.

It's not to my taste but there's nothing wrong with it so go with it if you like it

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 23/05/2020 16:36

Not a massive fan of Ronnie. I've heard of a few baby Ronnies and it never grabs me.

Alexander is great, though.

RoseMartha · 23/05/2020 16:38

Ronan is ok.
Prefer Alexander

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 23/05/2020 16:39

Never tell people your names until baby has been born and officially named.

Alexander is a good all rounder. Not so fussed on Ronald personally, but actually it shows a bit more personality on your part than boring Alexander.

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 23/05/2020 16:40

Definitely don’t call your child Ronnie. People will think you’re stupid krays fan.

Edenember · 23/05/2020 16:41

I’m not keen but that doesn’t matter. My fave of your other options is Vincent and Vinnie is nice too. Also like Alexander / Sasha.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 23/05/2020 16:41

Not keen on Ronnie but Ronan is an excellent name.

LolaSmiles · 23/05/2020 16:42

I don't like it Ronnie, but ultimately it's your choice and unless you've asked people's opinion then the polite response to someone mentioning a future DC name (unless it's going to give them rude initials or be shortened to something that they'll be mocked for) is polite neutrality.

Viletta · 23/05/2020 16:43

Thank you everyone!

@ChandlerIsTheBestFriend what's krays?

I have a friend who's baby boy is Ronnie and it's short for Aaron

I tell close friends and family and they all want to participate in choosing. You're right I should probably stop discussing it. I find it's so hard to pick a name.

Do you have suggestions for international names?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/05/2020 16:43

Vincent is the best of your list. Have you considered Lawrence?

ChandlerIsTheBestFriend · 23/05/2020 16:45

what's krays

The kray twins. Murdering gangsters from the east end of London. Films made about them so thick people have turned them into idols.

Viletta · 23/05/2020 16:45

Alexander is a solid name but funny enough everyone I know with this name don't like it (they are all adults)

DramaAlpaca · 23/05/2020 16:46

I like Ronan, but it doesn't naturally shorten to Ronnie thank God I don't like Ronald at all. I do like Vincent, though.

I think if people are reacting negatively to a name it should possibly make you have a rethink.

Ideally you wouldn't tell anyone until after the birth, nobody would make a negative comment then and if they do they are being very rude.

Borntobeamum · 23/05/2020 16:48

Mrs Hinch has a Ronnie.
However she tends to call him Rrrrroooonnnnnnie.
I don’t like it but that’s just my opinion.

Viletta · 23/05/2020 16:49

Close family all love Ron and Ronnie.

Can I ask what's wrong with this name? Is it just too old school? Or too Ronald McDonald?

Blursula · 23/05/2020 16:49

Hi OP, I’ve found it’s just best to say ‘we’ve got a few thoughts and will decide when he’s here.’ Because even though you don’t want opinions, unfortunately the opinion of close family does end up tarnishing a name you like somewhat. That definitely happened with us, when MIL called one of our choices ‘disgusting.’

I’m not keen on Ronnie but I know a couple of baby Ronnies. I like Ronan. And I LOVE Alexander/Sacha - Sacha is on our shortlist for DS due in a few weeks.

chunkyrun · 23/05/2020 16:50

I like all your choices op. What about Ralph, rafe, Franklyn?

Pipandmum · 23/05/2020 16:52

Ronan is ok. Sasha as a nickname is hard for a boy - all the ones I know are girls.
The Ronnie I now is also a girl (I think her name is Roberta).
If you particularly like the nickname just have that as the name.

Ritascornershop · 23/05/2020 16:53

For international names what about Max or Nicholas?

BeMorePacific · 23/05/2020 16:53

I like all your name choices.
I never tell my baby names, because other people’s opinions just don’t matter. xx

worriedmama1980 · 23/05/2020 16:53

I think the problem with Ronnie is that in the UK, its very associated with the Krays, and people glorifying murder and crime. A bit like Bonnie and Clyde type thing, except worse to be honest. That's the main reason its started to come back I think, films and biopics about them.

I quite enjoy old-fashioned names, my daughter has one that probably fits into the same category, but I'm wary of names that are v associated with particular people.

worriedmama1980 · 23/05/2020 16:55

Of friends who have wanted an international name, two chose Luca. But I guess it depends v much on the other country.

Ladycoo1 · 23/05/2020 16:56

I love Alexander. Also Alex and Sasha. Not keen on Ronald.
