Hi all,

I picked a name that I really like, it's very old fashioned but I think it's coming back.

I just hate when people bluntly tell me that they don't like it or that's an awful name. I tell them the name and not ask their opinion. Am I just too sensitive?

Anyway, now I do ask your opinion, what do you think of Ronnie - Ron - Ronald or possibly Ronan?

I like a proper solid name not new wave made-up. I'm Slavic DH is British, I'd like a name that would work in both countries or one English and another Slavic, like Ronald Alexander.

Other options that I don't like as much are
Anton
Vincent - Vinnie
Alexander - Sasha

Thoughts?

I like Alexander and Anton - we used one as a middle name and the other was on my shortlist for first name. Personally don’t like Vincent... little Vinnie... no, not for me.

I don’t like Ronan, seems to be quite trendy currently but reminds me of Ronan Keating. I like Ron or Ronald, but they are unusual!

Other international ideas: David, Mark/ Marcus, Daniel, Constantine, Maximilian/Max, Nicholas...

Whatsyourflava · 23/05/2020 16:59

I think if you like Ronnie then use that name or Ronald. Ronan won't work.
Plus Ronan will continually get misheard for Roman (current fastest rising boy name) - very popular.

I quite like Ronnie.

peachypetite · 23/05/2020 17:00

Stop discussing your name choices! It’s nobody else’s business.

Viletta · 23/05/2020 17:07

Haha so true.. people ask what choices I have and I naively tell them :))

I find choosing names so difficult especially not being British myself. Some names sound so lovely in English but would just not work in East Europe and vice versa.

If you could throw some suggestions that would be great!

About gangsters.. I see a point, I know lots of Bonnie's though and never associate them with Bonnie and Clyde.. also by the time he grows up this would be ancient history I guess.. I also know Teds and I don't think of Ted Bundy.. what else is off putting about Ron in your eyes?

Also like Arthur - Archie

Sasha is lovely and Anton is quite nice. Ronnie has a nice sound, but has a really unfortunate association with the Krays. Sadly it sounds a bit like a wannabe gangster name.

Have you tried looking at the top 100 names lists from your country and comparing it with the British one? You may find some names you hadn't thought of that appear in both lists and work in both cultures/languages.

Alexander is lovely, Ronnie isn't.

bestlifetime · 23/05/2020 17:27

When I tell people my daughter name people say "ah ok"'or my "that's my Gran's name." Only one person has said something nice, but I Love it and that all that matters. Don't tell people before your baby is here as you need to choose something you like with being influenced.

bestlifetime · 23/05/2020 17:28

*without being influenced Smile

dany174 · 23/05/2020 17:35

I know what you mean about finding a name that works well in both languages.

I like Ronald. It sounds lovely in my own language, not so much in english. I find it sounds harsh and heavy in english. I would chose Ronald over Ron or Ronnie because the other two you can always use as a nickname. A Ronald can become a Ron or a Ronnie but not the other way around.

Names I think work well in multiple languages:
Thomas
Denis
Lucas
David
Jacob
Daniel
Robin
Oliver
Kasper

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/05/2020 17:39

DH and I have chosen DD2’s name but are telling no one. We don’t want people’s comments because we love it and that’s that.

Of your names, I’d go with Alexander.

begoniapot · 23/05/2020 17:40

I have an Alexander and had no idea I could call him Sasha. I just call him Al 😂

Wheresthebiffer2 · 23/05/2020 17:44

Nothing wrong with Ron, it's just a bit old fashioned.

There were two well-known comedians called "The Two Ronnies", very popular on TV, and they were funny old men.

There's the "Ronald Reagan" link too (ex US President). He was an old man.

AliasGrape · 23/05/2020 17:55

If I hear Ronnie I think O’Sullivan rather than Kray, but then DH is a big snooker/Ronnie fan. I don’t dislike it but I’m not keen on Ronald/Ron as I just think ‘old man’ but then I think that about a lot of names that are hugely popular and have made a comeback. I visit quite a few different schools Early Years with work and have noticed a few Ronnies in the last few years so it’s definitely ‘back’.

I love Vincent from your list, and also Alexander.

I like Max that a pp suggested - Maxim is nice.

Francis/Franklyn/ Frankie ?

Thomas/ Tomas?

Rupert?

Michael?

Viletta · 23/05/2020 18:15

I think of Ron Weasley from Harry Potter.

I like names that you can shorten and alter. Ronaldinio :)

Gosh I still love this name even after negative comments

Unfortunately, the name Ronnie is one of those names which many people associate with the poorer, less educated demographic. I agree with PPs that many —awful— people seem to think the murderous gangsters are people to be admired. There are an awful lot of Ronnie’s in my part of the country. Their mums are scary, fag hanging out of their mouth, swearing in front of the kids etc. (This is an exaggeration, but this is one of the reasons the name may be unpopular.) How about Roland? It’s similar, but wouldn’t provoke that snobby reaction. Nickname Roly is very cute.

Honeyroar · 23/05/2020 18:44

I’d have thought there would be more Ron’s around after Harry Potter. I think people would soon forget the Kray name anyway, it was years ago! I’m not as keen on Ronnie. I like Ronan.

NailsNeedDoing · 23/05/2020 18:46

I like Ron and Ronnie and Ronan, but not Ronald. It makes me think of Ronald Mc Donald the scary clown from Mc Donald’s.

I love Vinnie, and Anton, and Alexander, but not Sasha for a boy because it sounds too feminine.

drayco · 23/05/2020 18:49

Ronan is terrible.

Ronald was my grandpa's name.

Also Ronald Weasley. It's okay.

Ronnie is a chain smoking snooker player in my head or an East London gangster with blood on his hands.

Vinnie is a thug's name... but Vincent is nice.

Rowan would be nice?

Alexander is the nicest on the list.

FrothyB · 23/05/2020 18:50

My Grandfather was Ronald Vincent (Last Name), so I may be biased but I like both of them. He always went by Ron.

We called our daughter a very old fashioned name. Your child will have to live with their name sure, but names are always picked based on the parents taste and really, who cares what other people think?

I've no doubt when my daughter starts school, she's going to have friends with names that absolutely irk me, as I dislike the majority of popular names at the minute, especially the boys names. It will be my problem though, not theirs.

Spirali · 23/05/2020 20:00

I love Sasha! Alexander is nice but I only like it because of Sasha. Really don’t like any of the others, especially Ronnie.

cravingpistachiocake · 23/05/2020 20:25

Ronald does have connotations for me - Ronnie O’Sullivan (snooker player) or East End gangsters (they were active in the 1950s by the way, they’re already history, but a persistent cultural meme somehow). It does feel like an old man name really.

However, somehow I still like Ronnie as a nickname for Ronald or Ronan. I think it would work.

Alexander/Sasha is lovely, my favourite.

Vincent I don’t like because a kid at school was called it and he was a creep 😳

Arthur I like, I wouldn’t think of Archie as a nickname though. Artie?

sawollya · 23/05/2020 20:28

I like Ronan with Ronnie for short!

Ronald is not my cup of tea but Ronan is a nice name.

sawollya · 23/05/2020 20:29

Ps i also like Vinnie, and Victor too.

Arthur is dreadful.
Archie is ok
