Hi all,

I picked a name that I really like, it's very old fashioned but I think it's coming back.

I just hate when people bluntly tell me that they don't like it or that's an awful name. I tell them the name and not ask their opinion. Am I just too sensitive?

Anyway, now I do ask your opinion, what do you think of Ronnie - Ron - Ronald or possibly Ronan?

I like a proper solid name not new wave made-up. I'm Slavic DH is British, I'd like a name that would work in both countries or one English and another Slavic, like Ronald Alexander.

Other options that I don't like as much are
Anton
Vincent - Vinnie
Alexander - Sasha

Thoughts?

In my area (SE London) lots of people are choosing Ronnie, Freddie, Billy, Harry, Charlie, Vinnie, and they all sound a bit the same to me. There are so many of them I think they all get a bit mixed up. Also Bobby, Sonny, Stanley and the omnipresent Alfie.

Bloomburger · 23/05/2020 20:38

Aaron/Ronnie??

Arthur/Archie??

Aren't nicknames shortened versions of proper names?

helpmum2003 · 23/05/2020 20:41

Love Alexander, Anton is good.

Ronnie and Vinnie are chavvy round here.

Lordfrontpaw · 23/05/2020 20:44

I know a couple of little Ronnies - they always have ‘oh where Reggie’ and ‘as in the Krays??’.

TeaAddict235 · 23/05/2020 20:51

What about Samu nn for Samuel?

Bastian
Gregory
Patrick
Levin
Constantin

Iwalkinmyclothing · 23/05/2020 21:02

My Grampa was Ronald, always called Ron. I don't love it as a name tbh but I do really like Ronnie. And if you like it, use it anyway. Like you I needed names that worked in two countries/ languages, and that can be surprisingly limiting depending on the differences between the two!

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 23/05/2020 21:06

Ronan or Alexander/Alex

Aclh13 · 23/05/2020 22:06

I love ronan, Ron and Ronald not so much just think of Ronald mcdonald and Ronnie is cute could work on its own or as an abbreviation, I have a friend called Aaron legally but we call him ronnie

Viletta · 24/05/2020 00:21

@Bloomburger yep that's the point. I like full name in the passport and a short sweet name to call the baby at home

I like Gregory and we've got a name like that. But Greg for short is so harsh.. where I'm from it's shortened to Gosha. Alexander is a very popular blunt name and an obvious choice. I think I need more names to add to my short list. Other names that would work but I'm not too kin are
Nick
Tim
Max
Phil

What do you think about Eugene? It's my favorite Slavic name but I think it sounds dreadful in English and what would be a short version?

Holly147 · 24/05/2020 00:38

I love Alexander/Sacha - also Maxim and Tomas.

Peter could also work well, I think it's a lovely name but very underused.

sawollya · 24/05/2020 00:39

I like Gene !

sawollya · 24/05/2020 00:39

Eugene is a real 60 something name in Ireland but i can see it coming back

Holly147 · 24/05/2020 00:45

Or Ivan, or Stan.

The only shortening of Eugene I've heard is Gene, but I don't know any so there might be others!

Mish85 · 24/05/2020 02:09

I would stick with Ronald. You obviously like it and I think if you choose another name you'll always be comparing it to Ronald if that's your fav. My daughter has a name of the same age. My friends didn't like it but now love it as it's grown on them, and they become their name and give it fresh light. I really like Ronnie, I think it's got a cool retro vibe to it, lots of nn potential. Go with what you love as you're always going to have people with different opinions.

DocusDiplo · 24/05/2020 09:21

There's nothing wrong with Ronald / Ronnie / Ron. Pick them, you like them. There will always be a name that people don't like and I don't think its helpful for you to hear that lots of people don't like it !

KatnissMellark · 24/05/2020 09:29

I love Ronnie/Ron. If you love it, have it.

Viletta · 24/05/2020 09:41

@Mish85 @DocusDiplo @KatnissMellark Thank you, ladies! 😊

Ronald is fine.

I wouldn't use Ronan because Roman, Rowan and Rohan are popular.

I think Vincent will be Vinnie or Vince.
Alexander is nice.
Anton is a bit actor-y and will be Ant.

Pygmyseahorse · 24/05/2020 12:49

I'll never forget my mum flying into a huge shouty rage in the middle of baby clothes shopping when I told her our name choices when pregnant with dd.. It better not be a boy if that's his name!! I hate it!!!

Phew learnt from then on, pretty damn quickly that even those who you think will find something nice, support you or feel the same way may not and a name for your baby is sensitive, especially with hormones going wild!!

I may ask mil about pronunciations for a few(accent is where we are moving to so want to make sure it's pronunced right) but I'll not give anyone our top choices now until baby is born

If you love the name that's all that matters.

Pygmyseahorse · 24/05/2020 12:52

Also all your name choices are perfectly acceptable, they are classic with options of nicknames/shortenings for when they are of that age in school, they will look acceptable on a cv and are classic. Nothing at all wrong, Alexander would be my preferred out of your options but ronan makes a nice change too

JackMummy12 · 24/05/2020 12:52

My Daughter has a Ronnie in her class, I think it’s a lovely name.

I don’t know why people think they have a right to comment on a baby’s name, it’s SO rude when you are just telling them not asking for an opinion.

One thing I will say is, people will make the comments about it before baby is born but once they are born, no one will say anything.

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 24/05/2020 12:52

Ronald is my DS1s middle name. Hes named after my late Grandfather. I'm always amazed by how many people reply with "Ronald? Poor kid" when they find out his name. Angry
Either that or people assume its after Ron Weasley Grin

peperethecat · 24/05/2020 13:08

Stop telling people, OP.

I think Ronald/Ronnie is fine. I like your other options too.
