My baby names getting popular😩

Abilala92 · 22/05/2020 19:38

I know it’s ridiculous it’s just a name after all, but does any one else get really peeved off when their formerly unheard of baby name suddenly becomes popular?
When I had DD1 now 2 I’d never heard of anyone with her name didn’t know of any babies being called it. I joined local ‘mum’ groups on fb and no one ever suggested it on baby name posts.
Then the day I had her a bloody xfactor reject called their baby it, then a soap start used it, then a woman I know of had twins and called the girl it, now my neighbours daughters calling her baby it.
I know I’m being ridiculous but am I the only one that feels like this?

What is it?

NuffSaidSam · 22/05/2020 19:40

No, it's horrible to be at the start of a name trend. Particularly, if you deliberately chose something unusual.

StoneSourFan · 22/05/2020 19:44

No your not the only one! We had been ttc for a few years, failed IVF etc. Only had one name! A girls name, my grandad had a sister called this name and I always loved it! My friend unexpectedly found out she was pregnant and found out she was having a girl. She mentioned the name (this was just before starting my first round of IVF) and I cried! Safe to say she didn't use this name and we have discussed the reason why I cried afterwards. I then found out a girl from works daughter had this name!
we didn't find out if we were having a boy or a girl and I just thought F**k it! This is a name we've chose and this is the name they baby will have if she's a girl!
If that's the name you've chose! You name your baby that name!
I know people who say these names don't belong to you and I know they don't but you don't want people thinking you have copied 'their' name

userabcname · 22/05/2020 19:48

Happened to my friend. She managed to name her DS something that I think is now a top 10 name just before it got popular. Her neighbour even used it and has the same surname! I didn't know any before my friend used it and I now know about 6 boys with that name.

Abilala92 · 22/05/2020 20:08

@NuffSaidSam it’s the most annoying thing! I chose it exactly for that I wanted her name to be different.

@StoneSourFan I’m glad you finally got your baby I can’t imagine having to go through those processes! It’s so annoying isn’t it, I know it’s silly but when a names your name it’s just yours isn’t it! What a lovely friend leaving it alone aswell I know people that have been in this situation and the friends took it anyway. I’d be gutted.

@KatnissK I’m in that same boat mine wasn’t on the list until recently but it’s now within the top 100, not quite as bad as your friend. It’s just soo annoying I hadn’t seen this name anywhere before now it’s everywhere, it’s so frustrating. I wouldn’t mind but it was a real love it or hate it when I was pregnant people always had an opinion.

The thing is, other people are tuned into the same zeitgeist that you are. It’s inevitable. You want an unusual name, and so do others, and the same combination of factors that led you to choose it will also have led others. And then it snowballs.

rhowton · 22/05/2020 20:23

OP is your daughter called Dusty?

musicinspring1 · 22/05/2020 20:25

I called my eldest daughter Amelie back when I got comments about how unusual it was and they had never heard of that name before Grin

Adelais · 22/05/2020 20:27

My dd1s name seems to be really popular now. She was born in 2013 and the name was about 300 in the name charts but it must be in the top 100 by now.
I’m curious what’s your dds name?

Putapeonyinyourpocket · 22/05/2020 20:27

Ditto!
We had our son in 2018, revealed that we'd chosen Wilfred as his name. Loved its strong meaning as well as the options for shortening it if he chose to do so. Since then, so many friends have told us their friends have chosen the same name and then blow me down when Boris announced it!

MockneyReject · 22/05/2020 20:29

Oh God, yes, the X-Factor reject thing - I honestly thought I would have to change DC's name!
I also have a (young) adult Reuben...🤨

Cattenberg · 22/05/2020 20:29

At least it’s cool to be ahead of the curve. Lagging a few years behind is much worse. Like when Ross and Rachel in Friends called their baby Emma. (Yes, I know they’re American and fictional).

NeverGuessWho · 22/05/2020 20:29

I know where you’re coming from, OP.

But, every cloud has a silver lining...I have 3 DDs and whenever I hear other children being called with the same names, they are always much younger than my DDs, and I think ... Yeh, it’s popular now, but I got there years before you.

BornReady · 22/05/2020 20:37

Emma is timeless, surely?

Sittingontheveranda · 22/05/2020 20:48

Emma has always been widely used. I don’t think Friends has anything to do with it.

whatausername · 22/05/2020 20:50

@daisypond Totally agree, you come across something, it plants a seed. Maybe see or hear it a few times but don't consciously pick up on it. Then the name just "comes to you" and you think it's super unusual and go for it but lots of others have been exposed to it just like you. It's unfortunate if you were aiming for rare but not all that surprising.

Cactusflower1 · 22/05/2020 20:55

Another who wants to know the name!

But I know what you mean. I’d feel the same.

Morgan12 · 22/05/2020 20:55

What's her name?

Fosler · 22/05/2020 20:57

I chose two names for my daughter but when she was born they didn't seem to suit her. Took me 3 days to choose two names that fitted. The lady in the hospital room backing onto mine chose exactly the same two names! 🙄

MrsGrindah · 22/05/2020 20:58

No sorry you are being precious. It’s a name . Lots of people have names the same.. so what? You can’t start or own anything, Get over it.It doesn’t reflect on you our you child at all.

Midnightdream · 22/05/2020 21:01

My DS name is getting popular which I never thought in a million years would after the hate from it 8 years on here! How times have changed Wink

DS is Ralph

Francina670 · 22/05/2020 21:04

If your daughter is only 2 the name won’t have become so much more popular that quickly. It’s just that before you have kids of your own you don’t know what they’re all called and think children are still called the same names people had at your primary school.

goingoverground · 22/05/2020 21:14

I hated having an unusual name growing up, it made me feel "different" and I could never get souvenirs with my name on like my friends Sad

Now I've grown to love having an uncommon name, it's suddenly had a surge in popularity and made the top 100. It's always popping up on baby names thread here. Typical Grin On the plus side, I suppose I could finally buy as much personalised plastic tat as my childhood heart desired now!

sawollya · 22/05/2020 21:24

Did you check the name stats, or did you just think it was original. My friend told me in 2003 that she called her baby amelia because it was unusual.🤷‍♀️

MrsSiriusBlack1 · 22/05/2020 21:24

Is it Delilah?
