My baby names getting popular😩

I know it’s ridiculous it’s just a name after all, but does any one else get really peeved off when their formerly unheard of baby name suddenly becomes popular?
When I had DD1 now 2 I’d never heard of anyone with her name didn’t know of any babies being called it. I joined local ‘mum’ groups on fb and no one ever suggested it on baby name posts.
Then the day I had her a bloody xfactor reject called their baby it, then a soap start used it, then a woman I know of had twins and called the girl it, now my neighbours daughters calling her baby it.
I know I’m being ridiculous but am I the only one that feels like this?

@thegreylady I love Jason and find it a shame that it’s been so dated. I love Guy too but DH is unconvinced.

ShellsandSand · 22/05/2020 21:54

My sis in law named her baby Delilah 9 years ago and everyone was like what is she thinking? But now everyone loves it and we are seeing loads of people on fb using it for newborns. Just one of those things OP. Take it as a good thing. I have never met another of my two kids names since I had them.

Smellbellina · 22/05/2020 21:56

I can’t find the list now, there probably were a couple of unusual ones. But most of them I know a least a couple of children with those names. Obviously unusual names don’t need to be weird but once you’ve heard them on a few children they don’t seem unusual. Doesn’t mean they wouldn’t seem unusual in other areas of the country etc obviously.

MJane3 · 22/05/2020 21:57

Yes I'm terrified of that! I call it "getting Finley'd".

Once upon a time you didn't know anyone named Finley. Now we all know 5 Finns under 5!

Mollythepoodle · 22/05/2020 21:58

It has surprised me recently that Imogen is often mentioned as not common (as in popular) Every other girl under 9 here seems to be called Imogen or Matilda.

Abilala92 · 22/05/2020 22:01

@ShellsandSand I had exactly the same it was very love or hate! The worst was people instantly bursting out Tom Jones when I mentioned her name😂
I love unusual names my second favourite was Vada, like on my girl. But my cousin called her girl something similar so I couldn’t.

@Abilala92 oh god they got that for the first 6 months or so and I could see my sis in law smile through gritted teeth each time! Ha. And the plain white tees song! Hey there Delilah! But it really is a very pretty name.

june2007 · 22/05/2020 22:04

Yeh there are a few I know one who is 9-10ish and one who is on, and heard of others. And ofcourse people will sing Both the Delilah songs thats a given.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 22/05/2020 22:14

I don’t think you can win in the name stakes, years ago pre social media and the internet you could contain an unusual name, now just the mere mention of a name and it’s gone global in seconds! so the seeds are sown for everyone to use the name. It’s not just names though, anything you think is unique, they way you decorate your house for example, thinking you are ahead of the curve and being oh so original then the following week you see the same style all the rage in Dunelm..... way of the world I’m afraid.

dicksplash · 22/05/2020 22:30

I have a double barrelled name that in the 70's was quite unusual- my mum said that by the time she left the hospital with me a couple of other mums decided to use the same name as they liked it so much.

For a number of years my name or similar versions of my name (slightly different first name and some not hyphenated) was used including in a popular soap!

Scruffyoak · 22/05/2020 22:49

I had a Ruby and it got really popular a few years later in 2006 but do not know many her age. My youngest has a common name...or so I thought!

devildeepbluesea · 22/05/2020 22:54

DD's name was uncommon but not weird when she was born in 2013. Since then it's been mentioned on here regularly as a name everyone "loves" (usually), but even so I've only ever met another one, and then it was only when I overheard her dad calling for her in Boots.

DramaAlpaca · 22/05/2020 23:01

DS1's name was pretty much unheard of in England when he was born. Then the following year someone with his name became famous and all of a sudden the name took off and they were all over the place. I wasn't happy.

I was well ahead of the curve with DS3's name, but there are loads of little ones with the name now and it's very popular on here.

Schrodingerspeanutbuttersandw · 22/05/2020 23:17

@Putapeonyinyourpocket

I'm a Mum of a Wilfred, I feel your pain!

Sevo7 · 22/05/2020 23:25

When we choose Ds’s name (Louis) it definitely wasn’t in the top 100 and I’d didn’t know any young children or even young adults with it so was confident it was unusual. We moved area shortly after he was born and at our first baby music class there were 5 other Louis’s Blush

He’s one of 4 in school now (different area) but luckily the only one in his class!

pinkpinecone · 23/05/2020 08:37

That's always the risk with an unusual name.

All you need is someone famous with the name to make it popular. Names like Margot and Mila grew quickly in popularity because of the actresses or Harper because of the Beckhams.

It's much better to be ahead of the trend.

finallychangedmyusername · 23/05/2020 08:42

If it helps, I don't think I've ever met (or heard of in real life) a Delilah.

Spirali · 23/05/2020 09:15

How did you find the name? Did you google unusual names? I always find that people do this and then get surprised when their unusual name becomes popular. I remember see Aria at the top of unusual name lists the year I had my daughter and there were loads born that year!

HotSince82 · 23/05/2020 09:27

I have a seven year old Delilah, still not met another one.
My eldest son's name is Eden, he is fifteen and I had only ever heard it used for men in 2005 and had met only one adult Eden. On the Eurostar in 2009 we met another family with a son named Eden who was a few years older than ours, since then the name seems to have been largely adopted for girls especially by rather, and I know I will get slaughtered for this chavvy families.

You can't win OP, if you like the name, use it and congrats on your pregnancy!

OnABeachSomewhere · 23/05/2020 09:42

I agree with daisy that many people are tuned to the same 'zeitgeist' and styles. It does seem to be that some names go from virtual obscurity to popularity. I never met a Jack or Isobel for years, then they became really popular.

Whatsyourflava · 23/05/2020 12:07

@Abilala92 I've heard of the name Delilah but honestly I know it feels to you like it's getting popular (and I accept its growing in popularity) you will be much more tuned in to other baby Delilahs than the general population. In real life I only know one baby Delilah and she is called Lyla day to day anyway. That's a bonus about Delilah. The fact there's so many nickname options means that the name will feel even rarer than it actually is. Even if there's another Delilah at her school they'll probably both go by different nicknames.

Does your daughter have a middle name? Because if so, if she's ever remotely bothered about a semi popular first name, she can choose to go by middle name? If it's a common middle name, why don't you register her another one too? I've got about 3 family members all of whom go by their middle name day to day

SingleHandSue · 23/05/2020 12:13

19 years ago there were very few Logans about. We chose it for DS1 and had a lot of people tell us it was unusual.

10 years later every chav family around here was using it.
