My baby names getting popular😩

I know it’s ridiculous it’s just a name after all, but does any one else get really peeved off when their formerly unheard of baby name suddenly becomes popular?
When I had DD1 now 2 I’d never heard of anyone with her name didn’t know of any babies being called it. I joined local ‘mum’ groups on fb and no one ever suggested it on baby name posts.
Then the day I had her a bloody xfactor reject called their baby it, then a soap start used it, then a woman I know of had twins and called the girl it, now my neighbours daughters calling her baby it.
I know I’m being ridiculous but am I the only one that feels like this?

You’ve got to call your kid something pretty shit if you don’t want everyone else to join in.

Buzz22 · 22/05/2020 21:27

Pretty sure your daughter's name is Delilah? (X factor reject is cher lloyd and soap star is Helen flannagen I assume?)
It's a pretty name. Dont be concerned other people use it. It's not massively popular but may be on the rise.
I know of 1 baby Delilah but I dont have children yet.
I grew up with an uncommon name. Still uncommon, very occasionally pops up on here. I dont like it and always go by a nickname except for work. Although I would also hate to have the same name as everyone in my class.
So maybe a more semi popular name is the best option! A happy medium!

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 22/05/2020 21:27

Happened with all 3 of mine OP. Eldest has managed to go all through primary being the only one though, don’t think the other 2 will

VioletVerity · 22/05/2020 21:29

@goingoverground

I was exactly the same, I was so disappointed trawling through the souvenir shops when I was younger! If I did find something with my name on, it wasn't spelt properly. I hated telling people my name as well, I was incredibly shy anyway and felt I had an odd name.

I do wonder when people name their children random, out there names, what the child thinks when they grow up.

sluj · 22/05/2020 21:30

I know what you mean my DS was given a very unusual name 22 years ago but I often see it suggested on here for boys names now. I wish you would all stop suggesting it Hmm

bananaskinsnomnom · 22/05/2020 21:33

Emma might be timeless, but I think Friends popularised the name Phoebe for sure......

My first choice of name is I ever have a daughter isn’t even in the top 1000.....maybe I should rethink.....Friends and family have use up the top 10 for male and female....

NeneValley · 22/05/2020 21:33

I almost called my daughter Elektra (I like Greek mythology)

I make wood name signs and the trend for Victorian names is still roaring ahead.

‘Unique’ names like Ka$h, Lilly-Jaycee, Tianna, Hebe, Maicey are definitely on the (orders) decline.

Susan, Kevin and John will be back in fashion before you know it.

These are still the most popular name orders at present.

@Midnightdream my brother (born 1990) is Ralph and he was the only one back then. But yes I have noticed quite a few over the past year or so. It’s a lovely name people are catching on Smile

ElectricTonight · 22/05/2020 21:35

Yes OP it's annoying my daughter is 7 I named her Erin, now there are loads of Erin's.

sawollya · 22/05/2020 21:35

I like the name Susan. The sound is nice.

sawollya · 22/05/2020 21:36

Although in America two syllable names ending in an -an sound are very popular so susan is a 60s sounding Bell Tone name.
I can see that coming back in

Smellbellina · 22/05/2020 21:36

Oh I do know a few Delilah’s but they’re all between 3-6

Abilala92 · 22/05/2020 21:37

@MrsSiriusBlack1 and @Buzz22 you both got it!
I did check name stats and things before and it was very uncommon, I scrolled and scrolled through lists of baby names and Delilah rarely appeared. I’ve always loved it from being very young, I knew I’d have a Delilah x

I hear you. I went off my original favourites as they got too popular, now we’re settled on a girl and boy name for DC1 (on their way) and mumsnet’s just posted a list of unusual names to consider, and both bloody names are on the list! They’re both the kind where maybe only 10 are born each year, but they’re still proper names with long histories. I’m terrified they’ll suddenly get popular! Think I’ll be ok with girl name, but fear boy name may get going...

Idododoidadada · 22/05/2020 21:41

Emma has always been widely used. I don’t think Friends has anything to do with it

But Rachel constantly saying “Emma.Emma.Emma” was the reason we discounted it as a girls name - works both ways Smile

LetTheSecretOut · 22/05/2020 21:43

If its Delilah its a really lovely name.

Smellbellina · 22/05/2020 21:44

I thought Mumsnet’s list of unusual name were decidedly not unusual!

princesshollysmagicwand · 22/05/2020 21:45

Oh don't. I had my favourite girls name picked out as a child. It was in a film released in 1999 when I was 14. I loved it then and I still do.

I had my daughter in 2016. I gave her the name regardless. It was Evie - short for Evelyn - from Rachel Weisz's character in The Mummy.

Was popular by then and it still is now. I always get so mad when people say it's a name that's just 'in' now (or was, a few years ago). I know it was mega popular but that's not why I chose it!!! Argh.

helpmum2003 · 22/05/2020 21:47
  1. OP if you love the name use it.

  2. If you don't love it anymore because it's popular then choose something else.

Personally I'm an option 1 person but you sound like a 2!!

Idododoidadada · 22/05/2020 21:47

Actually after - presumably- a lot of women on maternity leave watching the daytime programme 800 words, what we now see a lot of in baby names are:

Arlo
Shay
Woody
Ike

Delilah has yet to arrive in our area op.

Cattenberg · 22/05/2020 21:48

I meant I was surprised that Friends writers picked a name that had been super-popular a few years earlier and was now on the way down the charts. I’ve since learned that name trends in the US are very different to the UK.

thegreylady · 22/05/2020 21:49

I remember when I was pregnant back in 1969/70 thinking I’d like a name from Classical mythology (pretentious I know). I thought of Jason being so unusual, no one would call their son Jason...
In the end I went for something different. I was a teacher and there were so many Jasons I couldn’t believe it.
I called my son Guy, by the time he was 11 he was asking why he didn’t have a decent name like Neil or Stuart! As for Guy, as he got older a swift vowel change by the bullies caused a lot of grief. It’s hard to get it right isn’t it. He is 50 now and very happy with Guy.

Batmanandbobbin · 22/05/2020 21:50

I’d have presumed the name become popular after the plain white Ts song?

But I just googled when it came out and now I feel old.

BuffaloCauliflower · 22/05/2020 21:50

@Smellbellina many weren’t, but ‘my’ two are certainly on the much lesser used end. I’ve looked at the ONS statistics! Unusual doesn’t have to mean weird.

bananaskinsnomnom · 22/05/2020 21:51

Google the Top 1000 baby names UK - I think it’s the list for 2017 / 2018 - I found it quite interesting!

The talk about Susan etc becoming more popular again -Edith, Betsy, Connie, Mabel for example are climbing the ladder.....there were even 50 odd babies born that year named Patricia which surprised me!

Lots of “older names” are reappearing.
