I just think it's so gorgeous. Fresh, I actually dislike Sylvia don't mind spelling problems but Silvia feels like a different name and looks so much better imo. Silvie, Silvs is cute as a nn or Sisi too? Does it just look like a typo for Silva or Saliva or Sylvia ?

To me it does look like an attempt at creatively spelling Sylvia, even though I'm pretty sure Silvia is the original spelling. Either way, I prefer Sylvie.

AdvoCat · 21/05/2020 12:31

@toughgetsgoing I have been considering Sylvie for our DD and had the same thoughts about the spelling. The spelling Silvie is a name but not the recognised spelling in the UK, it is the Czech variant.

I do like the look of Silvie and I do think it looks more modern but I would worry she would have a life of having to spell it out to people and say "it's with an i not a y". I totally get your idea though and I still think your nn suggestions would work for either spelling or Sylvie/Sylvia. I feel Sylvie feels younger than Sylvie but that's just my opinion. I really hope that helps you somewhat.

PowerStruggle · 21/05/2020 12:32

Love it, but think the y spelling would be better.

IsabelleSE19 · 21/05/2020 12:34

Love either spelling - the 'i' one is the way it's spelled in Italy and Spain I think?

rottiemum88 · 21/05/2020 12:41

That spelling does remind me of saliva unfortunately. Love Sylvia though

MikeUniformMike · 21/05/2020 13:38

I thoroughly dislike the name Sylvia but don't mind Silvia.
Similarly I dislike Lynda but like Linda.

glitterbiscuits · 21/05/2020 13:42

Sylvia yes
Silvia no, looks like Saliva.

Ingridla · 21/05/2020 13:42

I quite like it

Singingatmidnight · 21/05/2020 13:44

Love Silvia. I know a lovely Italian Silvia. Definitely prefer this spelling, the Ancient Roman/Italian way.

Sylvia is also nice, but a bit more old-lady chic to me (which some people love!).

elfran · 21/05/2020 13:47

I prefer Silvia, it feels sleeker and more modern (though of course it's a traditional, perfectly acceptable spelling). Sylvia looks dated and I just think "sly".

twistandshoutoutloud · 21/05/2020 15:18

My mother's name is Silvia and it really does suit her. She goes by Silvia only except for my dad and a few people that call her "Chivis" which is the usual nickname for those named Silvia/Silvana where I'm from.

I think it's a very easy straightforward name and she's never had any trouble with spelling or anything. She's also the only Silvia I've ever met even though it's not that much of a weird name.

ClementineTangerine · 21/05/2020 15:23

I like it actually! I love the nn silvie.

I prefer just silvie/sylvie rather than with an A on the end

DramaAlpaca · 21/05/2020 15:27

Love it. Prefer it to Sylvia

TempsPerdu · 21/05/2020 15:28

Silvia is the Italian/Latin version of Sylvia. I like both versions but prefer it with a y I think. It has a lovely, silvery sound and nice meaning - I can see it becoming increasingly popular as part of the vintage/granny chic trend. Sylvie is already getting fairly common as it’s being chosen as an alternative to Amelie/Elodie etc.

flooredbored · 27/06/2020 08:14

I have a Silvia. She’s at school now, no major issues with spelling. Once people know they tend to remember. We call her Silvia and Silvie.

SoozKunt · 27/06/2020 08:16

Love the name, hate the spelling.

daisypond · 27/06/2020 09:26

I like it. It’s fine spelled like that. I know an Italian Silvia.

WeArePregnant1 · 27/06/2020 11:31

I like Silvia. It's really pretty.

123Dancewithme · 27/06/2020 23:50

I like this spelling too, as well as Silvie.

ByAllMeansMoveAtAGlacialPace · 27/06/2020 23:51

I prefer Silvana

SSILVIAA · 21/08/2023 20:25

Hey! My name's Silvia. I always find it a bit strange and ugly to pronounce, but 'm glad you like it!

Theoldwoman · 22/08/2023 01:46

Definitely Sylvia spelling. I prefer Sylvie though.

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 22/08/2023 10:55

LOVE Silvia! Agree that this spelling is 100% better - seems fresher and cooler somehow.

FayCarew · 22/08/2023 16:23

I quite like Silvia but not Sylvia. I'd say them slightly differently - the Si but more like Si in italian, not like the si in sill.

shoopshoopdedoo · 22/08/2023 20:42

Really like Sylvia, but the other spelling reads as “saliva” to me. I do like both Sylvie and Silvie though!
