Tamara

DramaAlpaca · 17/05/2020 23:33

I like Ruby a lot.

I like Tamara too, but was put off it when someone told me it sounds like somebody who couldn't say 'tomorrow'.

5LeafPenguin · 17/05/2020 23:34

Both lovely names, I would wait until your dd is born then see which she looks like most.

Ellmau · 17/05/2020 23:34

Tamara.

BubblesBuddy · 17/05/2020 23:35

I have met quite a few Ruby’s. Tamara is less used I think. Therefore I would go with Tamara. There is also Samara.

DuchessOfSofa · 17/05/2020 23:37

Ruby Or Tara.

Tamara is awful

BubblesBuddy · 17/05/2020 23:53

Why is it awful?

Samara is the name of the girl from The Ring though. Surely no one from her generation will probably watch The Ring but who knows, it is a well known film so...

whatausername · 18/05/2020 00:09

Ruby is a nicer sound but there are just a few too many for my liking. Tamara is fine and fewer around. I guess I'd choose Ruby if I couldn't wait and see which suited her best.

Daybydaybyday87 · 18/05/2020 00:10

Tamara

BubblesBuddy · 18/05/2020 00:10

I have met two Samaras. Never heard of The Ring. Never heard that association at all. Lots of names are associated with characters from books, films, famous people, Royalty and people in the news. If we cannot use names we have heard of with an association somewhere, the list gets very short!

“Ruby Ruby Ruby” the well known anthem and Tamara Mellon come to mind but does it matter? Ruby Wax, Ruby from Sex Education, Tamara Ecclestone, Tamara Beckwith: I could go on. However I still prefer Samara/Tamara!

SionnachRua · 18/05/2020 00:16

Tamara is very cool although having read the tomorrow association above, I don't know if could get that out of my head.

Ruby is pretty, not as unusual as Tamara but still a nice name.

Both nice options, I'd wait and see which one she looks more like.

Well I would just say that the association to this particular character is actually horrible as it's a dead girl that haunts people to death and it's not a pretty image. Everyone in my generation knows the film and the girl but maybe we are from different generations and regions. Just my two cents.

SionnachRua · 18/05/2020 00:19

I am another one saying I couldn't use Samara due to the Ring. Highly recommend the movie btw - it's well known for a reason.

Blackbear19 · 18/05/2020 00:21

Tamara, sounds a bit different to the usual girls names at the moment.

BubblesBuddy · 18/05/2020 00:24

I have never heard of it. I’m in my 60s. I just think people move in different circles and don’t all watch the same films so don’t have the same associations. At all. As I know one Samara well, I can say this association has never cropped up! It’s bizarre it has now.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 18/05/2020 00:29

Tamara is lovely. Ruby is nice but over used at the moment.

Aclh13 · 18/05/2020 02:52

There's a reason Ruby was voted the most common name, Tamara is unique but might be shortened to 'tammy' which is just no. So maybe Ruby

LotusClover · 18/05/2020 06:35

I can never understand this "see what she looks like" gag. She's going to look like a newborn baby! They all look the same when they're that young! I don't see how waiting until the baby arrives makes choosing a name any easier - if anything, leaving the name decision until after they're born will multiply the stress ten times over.

Anyway...

I absolutely adore Tamara, and the nickname Tammy is lovely too. Ruby is nice but just far too common these days, whereas Tamara is much more unusual and interesting. I also love Tara.

Malysh · 18/05/2020 07:33

I agree with @Lotusclover, waiting to see "what she looks like" isn't going to help, it'll just force you to make a spur of the moment decision that you may or may not be happy with down the line.

For what it's worth I also prefer Tamara. It's got a lot of nickname options and a noce rhythm to it.

I also wouldn't let name associations, unless very prominent, affect my decision. There are so many books and movies with so many names in so many languages, it's not like you can cover all bases anyway. Ruby is the name of a demon in Supernatural, so what ? Who cares ? And also what would you do if a movie came out 2 months after you named your child ? Change their names ?

Blursula · 18/05/2020 07:48

Ruby by a mile. The Tamaras I know go by Tammy so it depends how much that would bother you.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 18/05/2020 08:18

They are quite different in style.

Prefer Ruby but that's because the only Tamara I've ever known was a vile, narcissistic bully....

kennyjenny · 18/05/2020 12:53

Thanks for replies it's given me a lot to think about. The tomorrow association made me laugh, I hadn't heard that before.

I'm 50/50 on both but DH loves Tamara. I didn't realise Ruby is so popular at the mo so that's swayed me more to Tamara.

Samara is an option. I've watched the ring but didn't know her name.

I know a Tamara. Her father was from Argentina. It's never shortened to Tammy.

35andThriving · 18/05/2020 23:11

I like them both. I think I would prefer to be named Tamara out of the two.
I also really like the name Tamsin, at the moment, which I think has a similar feel to Tamara.
