Names that can't or shouldn't be used due to bad association

Not really a TAAT but sort of.
The Maxine one made me think about other names that may be perfectly fine but now can't be used.
Names like Myra or Madeleine. Perfectly nice names but straight away, your mind goes to Hindley and McCann.
Which other ones are there and why do some names of truly dreadful people not have the same impact?

AravisTarkheena - I think that it might be because of Amelia Dyer but don't think people would think about her much anymore.

Well indeed daisy that does support the argument. The event of the disappearance of Madeline McCann.

It doesn’t support the argument at all. The child who disappeared was called Madeleine, not Madeline- a different name which is both pronounced and spelled differently. The fact that people have already forgotten her name says a lot.

I know a Myra, she's late forties so will have been born not long after the infamous murders. How can her parents called her that?? The only reason I can think of is it must have a family meaning (or her parents were living in a cave)

I can't see Gary ever making a big comeback

daisypond · 17/05/2020 19:11

I’ve never heard of any negative associations with Karen either. My first thought with Karen is the little girl in Outnumbered.

SimonJT · 17/05/2020 19:13

@HeronLanyon I’m fairly certain we know the same ‘Boris’

Jeeperscreepers69 · 17/05/2020 19:20

My name would be gaylord

AMCoffeePMWine · 17/05/2020 19:23

Elmo, and Grover

Cactusflower1 · 17/05/2020 19:24

Isis. There was a programme on radio 4 a few years ago about women and girls called Isis and how they felt about their name now.

Years ago people would have called their daughters Amelia after the aviator.

Itsallthedramamick · 17/05/2020 22:09

I've used Madeleine. I think it's a beautiful name and McCann was a long time ago now. My daughters generation are unlikely to know of her

Lavenderblues · 17/05/2020 22:10

Willy or Fanny

bluebluezoo · 17/05/2020 22:16

I absolutely love Jezebel.

Was on my list but meaning and history of names are important to me so I just couldn’t.

Love Jethro too but it always comes with the sound of banjo’s 😂

Dyra · 17/05/2020 22:32

Not so much a bad association, but Alexa is going to be unusable as a name for a very long time.

Daffodil101 · 17/05/2020 22:35

Camilla

Jeeperscreepers69 · 25/05/2020 19:46

@aroundtheworldin80moves. Whos ian bradley?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/05/2020 20:10

@Jeeperscreepers69 not sure if it was a typo, autocorrect error or a brain error, but it should be Ian BRADY.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 25/05/2020 20:16

Whos ian bradley? !!!!!!!! I find that quite offensive actually. You need to educate yourselves. This is important history of our country.

I am shocked that people don't know this. IAN BRADY and his girlfriend MYRA HINDLEY comitted horrendous crimes together.

He was/is (not sure if he's still alive) a serial child murderer, he hid the bodies, and never said where they were, denying the families closure.

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 20:18

They are both dead, I’m surprised you don’t know that, it’s an important part of history, I agree.

christmasbiscuits · 26/05/2020 14:07
