These are our favourite names at the minute.

DP is Belgian so Matthias and Maurice are more known there than here. We live in England.

Would be grateful for any opinions.

I like Matthias Smile

Goostacean · 15/05/2020 17:42

Maurice is VERY old-fashioned. I know one called “Moh-reese”, I think he’s French...? It would be pretty cool to meet a baby called Maurice.

Matthew and Matthias are both nice. Neither stand out amazingly for me personally, but Matthew is a classic and Matt is great for teenagers onwards.

FawnDrench · 15/05/2020 17:49

Maurice is both quaint and lovely and that's definitely my favourite of the two names.

RoseMartha · 15/05/2020 17:54

Matthew

Siepie · 15/05/2020 17:57

Maurice is VERY old-fashioned.

This is my worry. Is it old-fashioned in a charming way, like a lot of names which are making a comeback, or in a 'what an odd name for a baby!' way?

Old fashioned and not in a good way.

bookmum08 · 15/05/2020 18:49

Not Maurice. Sooo old fashioned. I used to watch a cop show on tv with a character called that - except he was always known by his surname Bosco instead. I remember an episode where he helped a woman give birth. Afterwards he visited her at the hospital.
New Mum : "What's your first name, I'd love to name the baby after you"
Bosco : "Maurice"
Awkward pause......
New Mum : "Do you have a middle name?"

Siepie · 15/05/2020 19:44

Oh no, DP absolutely loves Maurice. There were 161 Maurices born in Belgium last year, but maybe the UK's not ready for a Maurice revival Wink

Matthias is gorgeous. I actually quite like Maurice too! I think it has a quirky appeal. Not much scope for nicknames though, so I think you'd have to love the name as I'm not sure what you could shorten it to? Maury!?

Goostacean · 15/05/2020 19:47

I dunno, I love unusual names. I feel like it’s one of those names that will raise eyebrows at his birth but he’ll grow into it and will be memorable in a sea of Romans, Noahs and Olivers...

Ughmaybenot · 15/05/2020 19:48

Matthew is lovely, and one of my favourite names.
For family / sentimental reasons, we’ll be using Maurice as a middle name. I agreed to that after much discussion as honestly it’s not cute old fashioned, it’s just old man old fashioned 😂

Squ1ggle · 15/05/2020 20:03

Maurice is cute but will probably be pronounced Morris by most people. I think Matthias would be lovely and Matthew is a good solid name

apapuchi · 15/05/2020 20:10

Oh I love Maurice, I am also a huge fan of Marcel (or Marcelo if we were ever to use it as DH is from a Latin American country). If you both love it then I'd go for it, Matthew just isn't anywhere near as lovely in my view.

apapuchi · 15/05/2020 20:11

I do always think of "Crazy Old Maurice" as said by Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, but I doubt that would be a wide point of reference 😂

MikeUniformMike · 15/05/2020 20:24

I'd go for Maurice.

bookmum08 · 15/05/2020 20:31

On the cop show I mentioned above their characters mum used to shout at him - "Moooor-eeece" in a loud New York accent so that's always how I mentality read it. Maybe it sounds better in a Belgian accent.

Siepie · 15/05/2020 20:56

Maybe it sounds better in a Belgian accent.

I think it does sound better in a Belgian accent but as we're in England our child will probably mainly hear it in a British accent, so I'm prepared for Morris or Morreece pronunciations.

My eyes rans over the title and my brain went "indifferent, lovely, oooft" 😂 sorry! I guess Matthew or Matthias then. Maurice is old-fashioned and not in a good way. It does not need to become current-fashion(ed). :-P

ofwarren · 15/05/2020 23:06

What is the correct way to pronounce Maurice? I also think of Gaston 😂 I like the name though.

Siepie · 15/05/2020 23:35

What is the correct way to pronounce Maurice?

In English I would pronounce it Mo-reece (o like hot).

In Flemish the first vowel sounds a bit like 'ow' but not quite, and it has a trilled r. I wouldn't expect English people to pronounce it the Flemish way.

Matthias or Matthew are nice.

RaininSummer · 16/05/2020 00:18

I think it would be pronounced more often as. Morris in Britain. Like Mathias better but little Morrie is cute.

CatSmize · 16/05/2020 00:26

Matthias is nice. Not a fan of Maurice at all, far too old-fashioned, and Matthew is very plain for my taste.

Ellmau · 16/05/2020 01:15

Matthias is lovely. Matthew is OK. Maurice feels a bit dated.

I suspect pronunciation is going to be a bit different in Belgium for all of them.

grisen · 16/05/2020 01:28

I love Matthias and Matthew. Indifferent about Maurice but quite old fashioned.
