I have no idea which one to pick, I'm torn between them so is DP.

I just think milk men,but that might be the Ernie bit.

newtb · 13/05/2020 19:20

Makes me think of Sid James and Ernie Wise so, sorry, I'd think again.

Apolloanddaphne · 13/05/2020 19:23

Why these wet, old men names? Neither. They are both horrible.

MajorFaffington · 13/05/2020 19:30

Hi, fellow fan of “old man” names here. These were both on our list for my son. I was pretty set on Sidney for a while, but I saw someone on here point out that Sidney is almost ‘kidney’ and it put me off! Ernie was my husband’s choice but it was my grandad’s name and, although I was fond of him, it didn’t seem right.

In the end we went with Albert (known as Bertie).

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/05/2020 19:31

Ernie.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 13/05/2020 19:31

Sidney. On the basis that your baby is unlikely to be the fastest milkman in the West.

Malysh · 13/05/2020 19:32

Wow replies are a bit harsh !

Personally I don't like Ernie because it sounds like a nickname, and I don't like nicknames instead of full names on birth certificates.

Sidney is okay, though it really makes me think of that tv series abouy Sidney Fox, what was it called... Relic hunter or something ?

Anyway, if you love those two names but can't choose, toss a coin and see which name you hope will win (before looking at the result obviously).

Or maybe keep looking if there's another name you love even more than those two.

BobbyEgg · 13/05/2020 19:33

Could you go with Ernie that way if he makes friends with an Albert it would be Bert and Ernie!

VerityB1 · 13/05/2020 19:36

Ummm, your baby will obviously be gorgeous and grow into his name whatever comments we make but I worry that Sidney or Ernie might be those super cool, retro sort of names you think of before having a baby but when you have baby/toddler/child/teen/young person/adult how does it fit? Actually not badly at all. Are you imagining he'll be a cheekie little chappie at school and this plays into that or are you imagining an intellectual (still ok) or sports (still ok). Go for either or both!.

KatherineJaneway · 13/05/2020 19:37

80 year old blokes.

Midnightdream · 13/05/2020 19:37

@Malysh I do like Ernest but I hate NN and would never call him Ernest only Ernie. I dont know if I'd be able to cope with the results of that Grin

I'm way too young for the fastest milkman in the west!

@MajorFaffington I love Albert, my DS has Albert in his class otherwise I totally wouldSad

I know a teenage Sidney who goes by Sid. I think it's quite a nice name, tbh.
Don't like Ernie at all.

AmethystMoonShine · 13/05/2020 19:43

I love both Grin

I know a 7 year old Sidney and it really suits him. I think Ernie would be equally great though.

I disagree with the ‘old man’ names. Those posters have presumably only known older gentlemen with those names.... they were little boys once too, probably when the longer names like Ernest were shortened to the likes of Ernie.
I know a few young Archies and Alfie’s too, all rock their names.

If pushed.... Ernie! ❤️

xQueenMabx · 13/05/2020 19:43

Definitely Sidney

Apolloanddaphne · 13/05/2020 19:44

I do love Ralph. It is cool and classy. Ernie and Sidney are neither of these things IMO.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 13/05/2020 19:45

Sid. He's a cool teenager. Can't see Ernie as anything less than 55.

Whatsyourflava · 13/05/2020 19:46

Sidney is sooooooo gorgeous and matches Ralph for being a great solid lovely name ❤️
I like Ernie too but Sidney is extra special

Midnightdream · 13/05/2020 19:47

@Apolloanddaphne I dare not tell you the other options I had instead of Ralph Grin

I love old man names!

ellanwood · 13/05/2020 19:48

I prefer Ernie but only as a NN for Ernest but you say you don't like nicknames.

How about some other old man names? (I love them too)
Alfred
Wilfred
Stanley
Arthur

Apolloanddaphne · 13/05/2020 19:49

Go on, tell me!

Sewingbea · 13/05/2020 19:50

I love the name Sidney. I taught a little Sidney in my reception class about twenty years ago and I still remember him fondly and am now wondering what he's up to as you've prompted me with the name Smile He's the only Sidney I've ever taught and he was fabulous, very determined and with a wicked sense of humour.

Midnightdream · 13/05/2020 19:51

@ellanwood I love Stanley but its popular now and it's a no go!

Midnightdream · 13/05/2020 19:52

@Apolloanddaphne

Stanley(I had but it's too popular for now)
Lucas
Marshall

Both are very popular now and I'm glad I went with Ralph!
