Do you like Elsie?

What do you think of the name? My next door neighbour growing up was a lovely little lady called Elsie and I think it’s adorable so I’d love to use it! My only worry is that it’s too old fashioned and I can’t see it on a teenager/ adult.... What do you think? It would be Elsie Elizabeth as a full name. My only other idea is ottilie (nn ottie) opinions would be great Thankyou! ☺️

Its lovely.
I'm in the north of scotland and know 3 Elsies born recently

georgialondon · 13/05/2020 17:00

I love it. It's quite popular in my area. I'd maybe use it next time.

Carpathian2 · 13/05/2020 17:00

I know so many girls called Elsie- usually double barrelled with May or Mai.

Sorry, but it's really common now

Crabbo · 13/05/2020 17:00

I like it, I know a couple - all under 5.

PorpentiaScamander · 13/05/2020 17:01

I love it. My friends DD is called Elsie, she's 7.

Twickerhun · 13/05/2020 17:03

I love it. I have a beautiful Aunty Elsie and it’s such a lovely name to me

CuriousPixie · 13/05/2020 17:03

Love it. If I had another girl I'd seriously consider it. A bit of an old Scottish name but I think it's lovely.

Whatsyourflava · 13/05/2020 17:09

Love it!

Sallyjo27 · 13/05/2020 17:10

I love it! Such a pretty name

toastofthetown · 13/05/2020 17:22

Elsie feels a bit twee as a full name to me. I prefer it as a nickname for Elisabeth/ Elspeth/ Elsa.

toastofthetown · 13/05/2020 17:24

As Elsie is a diminutive of Elizabeth, having the full name Elsie Elizabeth seems a tad redundant.

EngagedAgain · 13/05/2020 17:28

I didn't realise that Toast, but was going to say anyway the two together seem a bit much. Almost a bit of a tongue twister, and look too similar. Sorry OP, and of course it's entirely up to you what you call your child.

Blondeandbonkers · 13/05/2020 17:33

Thankyou for the feedback! Elsie seems generally quite liked which I’m really pleased about. Can you see it on a teenager etc? That’s my only concern. Also I didn’t realise it was basically a short version of Elizabeth! Maybe they don’t work together in that case! I only wanted to use it as it’s my grandmas name ☺️

I love it, but agree that Elsie Elizabeth is a bit like calling a child Harry Henry, or Jimmy James or Betty Elizabeth. If that doesn’t bother you though, go for it! Despite being the same names they do sound lovely together.

Lllot5 · 13/05/2020 17:35

My mum's name 😀
She’s 91.
My dgd best friend at school.
She’s 8
So pretty universal I’d say.

CakeCakeCake21 · 13/05/2020 17:35

Maybe Elsie has become so separate from Elizabeth it is like two separate names now? Like Sally and Sarah. I can definitely see a teenager called Elsie.

Lllot5 · 13/05/2020 17:36

My mum is Elsie Elizabeth.
Named after her mum and the midwife.

Feelthefear01 · 13/05/2020 17:38

Elsie is fine as a teenager name. Although a lot of people may call her else for short.

CrystalMaisie · 13/05/2020 17:43

Much prefer Ottilie. I hate Elsie probably for the same reasons you love it- an old lady’s names.

florascotia2 · 13/05/2020 17:46

Elsie ranked 22 in 2018 in England and Wales, the last year for which we have official data:
names.darkgreener.com/#elsie

Has risen sharply in popularity over the past 10 years.

MikeUniformMike · 13/05/2020 17:46

It's not a favourite, but I'm almost certainly much older than you.

Elsie was an older mum's name or a granny name when I was little.
Bettys were a bit younger, then Liz a bit younger again, then Lisa or Beth(an) in my age group.

I associate the name with the film Cabaret and with Elsie Tanner, (you may need to look these up Smile so not particularly good associations.

bridgetreilly · 13/05/2020 18:58

I like it but as a nn for Elizabeth or Elspeth. I wouldn't use it as her actual name, personally.

BatCrazyCat · 13/05/2020 19:03

I really love this name. If I had another I would use this name.

Bubblysqueak · 13/05/2020 19:06

Love it , we would have used it but had boys.

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/05/2020 19:15

I prefer a longer name on the birth certicate so would never just use Elsie but I have a dd called Elspeth and we were stuck between Elsie or Essie as a nn. We went with Elsie as the nn when she was born and used it for about a week but it just didn't feel right at all, way too twee so we went with something different (not Essie but a different nn). Some people still occasionally call her Elsie and it makes me cringe, I really don't like the name at all anymore
