Do you like Elsie?

What do you think of the name? My next door neighbour growing up was a lovely little lady called Elsie and I think it’s adorable so I’d love to use it! My only worry is that it’s too old fashioned and I can’t see it on a teenager/ adult.... What do you think? It would be Elsie Elizabeth as a full name. My only other idea is ottilie (nn ottie) opinions would be great Thankyou! ☺️

Tbh I like Ottilie better than Elsie, and like a pp I also prefer Elsie as a nickname for a more formal name on the certificate, but what really matters is whether you like it !

I've seen it on these boards more than once and it seems quite popular atm so it definitely won't raise any eyebrows !

rooarsome · 13/05/2020 19:23

It's lovely. DD has two friends called Elsie. I probably wouldn't have Elizabeth though

MilaRos · 13/05/2020 19:32

Thankyou for the feedback! Elsie seems generally quite liked which I’m really pleased about. Can you see it on a teenager etc? That’s my only concern. Also I didn’t realise it was basically a short version of Elizabeth! Maybe they don’t work together in that case! I only wanted to use it as it’s my grandmas name ☺️

Op every teenager also be Elsie, Evie, Maisie, Millie, Mollie etc so I don't see the concern. She will grow up with peers with similar names. Elsie is lovely btw

averythinline · 13/05/2020 19:40

Elsie is lovely - I slightly prefer Elspeth but using Elsie as a nn
I am a fan of Elizabeth - although I'm not sure would do both- do you have any other middle name options?

it won't stand out for a teenager as there are so many evie/molly/mia/issy type names - but having a lovely connection for a name is really good thing...
I am not an Ottilie fan as never sure how to pronounce it (and the one I worked with was a right snotty cow!)

CaitlinEJ · 13/05/2020 19:48

Love it, but I’m biased because dd1 (just turned 3) is called Elsie!

ArriettyJones · 13/05/2020 20:00

Not keen, no. Sorry. Too maid-of-all-work for me.

It’s a traditional diminutive of Elspeth, which is nice.

Elspeth itself is a derivation of Elizabeth. So “Elsie Elizabeth” is a bit like “Joey Joseph”, “Katya Catherine” or “Jock John”.

Miriel · 13/05/2020 20:04

I'm sorry, it seems really old-fashioned and unappealing to me, along the lines of Ethel or Mildred. I seem to be in the minority, though!

Fiflowertot · 13/05/2020 20:10

It’s lovely, I can see it on a baby to a full grown women easily.
Elsie Jayne
Elsie Jessica
Elsie Olivia

MerryDeath · 13/05/2020 20:12

i prefer Elise

babynamelover · 13/05/2020 20:19

Lovely as a nickname Eleanor could work as a full name, Eleanor Elisabeth is nice.

peajotter · 13/05/2020 20:31

I know an Elsie, only found out after 10 years that she’s actually named Elizabeth. If I was you I’d use Elizabeth as the official name and shorten to Elsie from the start. That way if it’s too popular then she can change it herself to Beth or Lizzie, especially as a teenager.

LotusClover · 13/05/2020 20:45

Really don't like it sorry. I'm not seeing the old lady association though, I think it's quite the opposite - childish and cutesy. Elsie Elizabeth is too much.

I much prefer Elodie, Eloise or Ella.

RuthW · 13/05/2020 20:46

Lovely name. Quite popular though.

peperethecat · 13/05/2020 21:44

I'm not keen, it's a bit twee. Victorian scullery maid name.

Much prefer Elsa.

Blondeandbonkers · 13/05/2020 21:49

Okay so it seems like Elsie Elizabeth is a bit much?? Fiflowertot i love Elsie Olivia! Thanks for the suggestion! (olivia has always been my favorite name but put off it as its the number 1 popular name and has been for years! What does everyone think of Elsie Olivia?

missmouse101 · 13/05/2020 21:51

No! I do not like it at all.

Maybelatte · 13/05/2020 21:54

It’s quite popular where I live now, I’ve heard it used on a few babies/toddlers.

NerdImmunity · 13/05/2020 21:54

Where I live every kid and it's dog is called Elsie. The twee names are pretty overdone here now

Helmetbymidnight · 13/05/2020 21:57

love it- elsie knocker is a hero of mine.

there are quite a few about though.

i also like Ilsa- from casablanca.

namechange34 · 13/05/2020 21:58

I've got two primary aged children and each have an Elsie in their class so its definitely not going to feel like an old ladies name to the younger generation.

ablisha · 13/05/2020 22:00

I really liked it but it's become so popular in the last year or two which has put me off

ErrolTheDragon · 13/05/2020 22:00

Not keen, no. Sorry. Too maid-of-all-work for me.

I knew an Elsie (now dead) who disliked it because it was a 'housemaid's name'. She was stuck with it because her middle name was worse.

Elizabeth is a good classic name , you can use Elsie as a diminutive but the child can choose to be a Beth or a Liz or whatever if they want.

DramaAlpaca · 13/05/2020 22:01

Nope, I dislike it. It sounds sort of housemaidy to me, which isn't a good association.

JunoJigglewick · 13/05/2020 22:01

Elsie is short for Elspeth, Scottish version of Elizabeth.

Saying That, I really like the sound of Elsie Elizabeth!

CostaCosta · 13/05/2020 22:06

I really like it
