Girls name like Shane

Hi folks

So I lost my dad in March, his name was Shane. I really want to honour his name for our little one who will be with us before not too long.. would do so as a middle name.

Easy is we have a boy. But what are your best suggestions for a girl alternative?? I've seen Shane/Shayne/Shana used as girl options, but not so keen....

If anyone has any others that we could consider, I'd be so grateful.

Previously we had chosen Arthur, Iris and Romey as our middle name options, named after grandparents.

Thanks ever so much. Xx

Shane is technically unisex but it's really only ever used for boys. It's a version of John; how about Joanna?

Edenember · 09/05/2020 21:32

@LizzieAnt I’m from Irish catholic family and is never heard it either until a read it in a book 😂 I don’t think it’s very common. Quick google shows it means pretty (the meaning I originally read), or ‘fairy palace’. Probably a mishmash yes, like most things. The -Shae part as a sound is certainly very Irish sounding to me.

Surprised no one suggested Shannon ?

Thisismytimetoshine · 09/05/2020 22:27

It's really not great 😬

ghislaine · 09/05/2020 22:33

I went to school with a Shani, pronounced Shar-nee.

Shauna? Shayla? Shenandoah? Shoshannah?

Sorry to hear about your Dad.

Parkandride · 09/05/2020 22:35

I know a female Shaine, pronounced shane, so it sounds very normal to me Smile

Drombeg · 09/05/2020 22:37

Shaelin is not an Irish name, and does not mean either ‘pretty’ or ‘fairy palace’ — that’s the kind of nonsense thrown up by US baby name sites who appear to think anything with ‘are’ indicates echt ‘Celtic’ whimsy!

DDemelza · 09/05/2020 22:39

Shaynetta?

Runkle · 09/05/2020 22:39

Shayla, Shae, Sade (said Shah-day)

exhaustedtomato · 09/05/2020 22:42

Sinead

helloPig · 09/05/2020 22:45

Sian

Wannabeeme · 09/05/2020 22:46

Olive sinead
Olive Shannon
Olive shania (I like the flow of this one best but agree with the shania twain connection)

Thisismytimetoshine · 09/05/2020 22:49

Yes to Sinead. Jean (English version) is another female version of John. It's a lovely name too.

BoneAppleTeaa · 09/05/2020 22:51

Change Olive to Olivia, Olivia Shane sounds pretty. I’m sorry for your loss, and congratulations on your soon to be here daughter :)

HerRoyalPain · 09/05/2020 22:55

I quite like Olive Sinead.

JaneJeffer · 09/05/2020 23:30

Johanna

Spirali · 09/05/2020 23:46

I love Shane for a girl but I also love Shay/Shae

cheeseycracker · 09/05/2020 23:48

If it's just as a middle name I'd be tempted by Artie for a girl

Olive Sian is nice though Smile

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 09/05/2020 23:49

Shay.
Sian
Lashane
Shayna
Shaney

Edenember · 10/05/2020 00:13

@Drombeg where does it originate from and what does it mean?

jfoyo26 · 10/05/2020 00:20

Shane means "God is Gracious". So maybe you could consider girl names with this meaning. Joanna or Joanne both have this meaning

LizzieAnt · 10/05/2020 00:56

Shane and Joanne or Joanna are all variants of the name John; that's why they have the same meaning.

Alwaysundecided · 10/05/2020 09:53

For a middle name I would go with Shane, but if it was for a first name I would use Shannon. It's lovely.

owlofathena · 10/05/2020 11:42

I would use Shane as a middle name for both boy and girl. My daughter has two middle names, one of which is my maiden name which happens to be a male first name. Her name still flows well and sounds feminine.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 10/05/2020 12:21

Shae, Seana, Sian, and Shauna are all lovely. Theres also a US actress called Shanae?
