Hi

Looking for a nice classy girls name.

Popularity doesn’t bother me, but just looking for something classy and elegant.

I like Arabella and Charlotte.

My husband likes Emily and Sarah.

Any suggestions? And your thoughts about my current list?

Thanks everyone

Anything used by the Royal Family.

I know a young Araminta. She gets called Mince. Grin

Francesca; my daughter’s name and I (obviously) love it. Mine’s been Frankie from the start, but I think it seems to fit whatever the personality; Francesca, Fran, Frankie...it can be cool & edgy or pretty & girly

I like both Sarah and Charlotte - I don't think you could go wrong with either one.

I'm not so keen on Arabella or Emily.

rosieposies · 03/05/2020 08:01

My cousin named her daughter Sara (pronounced like Zara) @op which I think is lovely and v classy

Aria20 · 03/05/2020 08:06

I have a Charlotte.
We also considered:
Arabella (but I didn't like Bella)
Anna
Elizabeth
Eleanor (Ella)
Victoria (didn't like Vicky or Tori tho!)
Zara
Alice or Alicia (A-lis-e-a)
Emily (nice but bland?)

I'm not keen on Sarah, knew too many at school!

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 03/05/2020 08:08

Personally I absolutely hate names like Arabella, Araminta, Georgiana etc, they all feel just too OTT for me.

A name doesn't have be 4 syllables long to be classy. Sarah is lovely. Other options:

Emma
Lara
Ellen
Sophie
Lucy
Anna
Beatrice
Alice
Alexandra (the only 4 syllable name I like...)
Mary
Louise/Louisa
Catherine
Martha

I like Emily and Charlotte. Not too keen on Arabella and Sarah but don't strongly dislike them either. How about Amelia? It's got the Emily feel about it but a bit fancier. Could be a good compromise.

Names like Evelyn, Isabelle, Eleanor, Olivia etc are a good bet in my opinion. They're classy but in a mainstream and classic kind of way, not in a "made in Chelsea" kind of way.

I agree with @MrsSchadenfreude that anything used by the royal family is probably fairly timeless. Also look at classic novels and the women's names in them; Jane, Elizabeth, Tess, Anne etc.

zigaziga · 03/05/2020 08:47

I like about 70% of the names posted but really dislike Arabella. I find it just so, so fussy.

peperethecat · 03/05/2020 08:53

I don't think Arabella is a classy name, sorry OP. To me it sounds like the sort of name a four year old would give her dolly.

Emily, Sarah and Charlotte are all classic names. Sarah in particular is not very widely used at the moment.

If you like those names then maybe consider Alexandra, Elizabeth, Katherine, Anna, Sophie or Sophia, Florence, Lucy or Lucia, Eleanor, Emma, Beatrice, Maria, Julia, Susannah, Madeleine, Josephine, Isabel.

If you like the "-ella" sound then Isabella is a classier choice than Arabella. You might also like Annabel.

cacaca · 03/05/2020 09:03

So what’s the opposite of a ‘classy’ name?

nowiknowmynoodles · 03/05/2020 09:20

Some of these a great. Hate Francesca though had a friend who then turned to Frannie and finally fanny 😂😂

emilybrontescorsett · 03/05/2020 09:29

If go with either Charlotte or Arabella.
I know so many Sarahs, I'm older though but it's probably the most common name amongst the women I know, I always have to refer to them by their surname when I'm talking about any of them.

Brownyblonde · 03/05/2020 09:50

I'm guessing the opposite of a 'classy' name (ie these wannabe middle class 'my daughter is speeeecial') names e. G araminta/octavia /serephina is the bottom of the rung lower class people and what they name their kids e. G dexter, koby, chanel, daizee-rae, Ellie-mae, Tyler, jayden, kayden, mackenzie. Personally I prefer timeless and normal that aren't too common. Louis, Samuel, Liam, niall. Madelaine, Ellen, Brooke

shirleyschmidt · 03/05/2020 10:35

Frances
Matilda
Clarissa
Laura
Emma
Claudia
Louisa
Isobel
Julia

Of your own choices I love Emily and Charlotte, classic names.
I don't like Sarah or Arabella at all.

pinkpinecone · 03/05/2020 10:51

Charlotte is nice and a timeless name, some other popular classic names below

Rose
Isobel/Isabelle
Scarlett
Florence
Sophie
Eleanor
Beatrice
Phoebe
Amy
Holly

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 03/05/2020 11:15

Not keen on Arabella. Love Emily, Isabella, Rose, Florence , Grace. All timeless, I think.

wonderrotunda · 03/05/2020 11:41

Rebecca
Eliza

Thefaceofboe · 03/05/2020 12:06

I wouldn’t see Arabella as classy, more tacky IMO. I like Beatrix, Genevieve, Vivienne, Camilla, Martha.

Babysbaby · 03/05/2020 13:49

Thank you all for the suggestions, really liking some.

Even though Sarah received some positive feedback, I just cannot see past its “dated” feeling and must veto it.

I can’t use Amelia as have bad associations with that name personally, though I can see it’s appeal.
I can see myself using Emily, but worried that it’s see as “common” due to its popularity?

I do love Charlotte and I feel that I could sway my husband but secretly worried about the nickname Charlie which I don’t like.

I will always have a soft spot for Arabella but my husband keeps thinking of Rubella for some reason!! So I might have to let that one go

Will discuss all suggestions with my husband later!

Arabella reminds me of arabiatta. I can just see a hot plate of arabiatta with penne everytime I hear 'arabella' Confused

MikeUniformMike · 03/05/2020 14:59

Arabella is too long.
Charlotte and Emily are both fine.
Several of my friends have a sister and SIL called Sarah.

LotusClover · 03/05/2020 16:36

Clara
