Is Mara short for anything? Amara, Xiomara and Guiomar (last one is according to Google) are all that I can come up with. I'm not planning to use it, just curious!

I worked for someone called Mara once. I don’t think it was shorted.

It is a name in its own right, but unfortunately it's the same name as those funny large rodent creatures you see at the zoo. Amara is lovely though

DD has a friend who's DD is called Mara Jade (MJ for short),now 15.
Summat to do with Star Wars I think.

It’s a name in its own right. It’s Hebrew in origin and means “bitterness”.

I guess it could also be a shortened version of some names like Amara, Tamara etc.

We know a little Mara and I love her dearly, but it’s one of the few names that I really couldn’t use due to the meaning.
