Long version for Penny

Hi all, i'm currently past my due date and awaiting the arrival of baby. I don't know what I'm having (very exciting!)
My partner and I are still undecided on names. We think we have a boys name chosen, but still undecided if it's a girl.
I love Penny for a little girl but I'm not a huge fan of Penelope. However I don't like the idea of giving baby a shortened name on their birth certificate.

What other names can be shortened to Penny?

Penina? Means "pearl" in Hebrew. Slightly penile, though.

backinthebox · 27/04/2020 21:01

100th-of-a-Pound. Or, err, Penelope.

Mopani · 27/04/2020 21:02

Maybe not suitable if you don't have any links to Greece, but Panagiota or Panayota. Its a Greek name but could be shortened to Penny? Or maybe Pandora? Not sure if that would work. Can't think of any others at the moment!

RandomMess · 27/04/2020 21:03

I know 2 ladies called Penny, both are just Penny 🤷🏽‍♀️

GrimmsFairytales · 27/04/2020 21:05

I don't think there really are any other names where it's an obvious nickname. Maybe Persephone, but that's pushing it.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 27/04/2020 21:06

Tuppence.

Hohohole · 27/04/2020 21:09

Pennifer

Brevityisthesoulofwit · 27/04/2020 21:11

Penjamin Smile

I do work with a Penninah (pronounced Pen-Nina)- never called Penny but it could work

RandomMess · 27/04/2020 21:13

Philomena?

Although obviously Phil is the more usual nickname for that...

Rockdown2020 · 27/04/2020 21:27

What about Penrose?

Staticelle · 27/04/2020 21:28

Just go with Penny if that's what you want to call her, i don't think anything except Penelope particularly works as a long version, and seems unnecessary if you won't be calling her that anyway.

DamnYankee · 27/04/2020 21:29

@sunnymamaroo

I found Pennington and Penrose as girls' names, but those sound a bit like names of estates. Confused

You could also hyphenate with a classic name, like Penny-Elizabeth, and keep the middle name short ("Anne").

If you love Penny, you might just have to put that on the birth certificate!

And congrats!

Londonborncatty · 27/04/2020 21:31

@Hohohole Pennifer has made me slightly hysterical with laughter.

YgritteSnow · 27/04/2020 21:33

Family member is just Penny. I think it's fine.

SE13Mummy · 27/04/2020 21:56

Penrose or Penna? I used to vaguely know a Pennarin who was named after the place in Cornwall.

I'd be inclined to go for Penelope on her birth certificate but tell everyone her name is Penny. She might want to be Nell, Pip or something else in the future. Both our DDs have official names with numerous short options. Although they go by ones we chose for them at the moment, their friends sometimes call DD1 (15) a different one and she appreciates the flexibility.

bridgetreilly · 27/04/2020 22:34

Penninah

But honestly, this list makes it pretty clear that there aren't really any alternatives to Penelope.

NothingIsWrong · 27/04/2020 22:40

Can you not just put Penny on the birth certificate?

Yellowcakestand · 27/04/2020 22:41

Just put on her birth certificate what you are going to call her. I don't understand all this 'we will call them this but officially that's not their name' how confusing for the child as they grow up

worstwitch18 · 27/04/2020 22:47

yellowcakestand nicknames have been around for centuries and are hardly confusing.

I think Penelope is the only name that is standard with Penny as a nickname. I do think it's a beautiful name (I know you're not a big fan). I know a Penny who is about 20, she is Penelope on her birth certificate but Penny in everyday life and has been since birth. Works well.

Thefaceofboe · 27/04/2020 22:48

Pennifer Grin Penjamin Grin just spat out my tea. Just call her Penny

MikeUniformMike · 28/04/2020 08:42

I know a Pennie who is just Pennie. I also know four Penelopes who are always known as Penny.

IGottaGetOuttaThisPlace · 28/04/2020 08:43

I love the name Tuppence

Staticelle · 28/04/2020 08:52

I actually really like Pennifer!

TKAAHUARTG · 28/04/2020 08:58

Thrupenny or ha’penny. Bit rude maybe.
