Hello all!

I'm quite set on the name in the title but a bit stumped on how to spell...I'm taking inspiration from the beautiful west coast Scottish island as has meaning to me and the other half and it's the only name we actually agree on - but for a name Arran is not a common way to spell and I don't want my boy to go through life always having to correct people on how to spell his name!

Keen to see if there is an overall consensus on spelling!!!

Thanks in advance! Smile

Aaron

CoconutLime · 27/04/2020 12:55

Definitely Aaron.

Sunflower40 · 27/04/2020 12:58

To me Aaron is pronounced Ay-ron but the island is Ar-ran so a bit different if that matters to you? Gorgeous island, I can understand why you would use it as inspiration.

Quizeerascal · 27/04/2020 13:00

I think Arran is fine if you want to name him after the island, although as you say he probably will end up having to correct people. Aaron is a different name (Moses' brother in the Bible) and there seems to be two different pronunciations which is a bit confusing some people pronounce it Ah-ron and some Air-ron. Arron looks like a misspelling imo. Both Arran and Aaron are great names though

TheThingWithFeathers · 27/04/2020 13:03

Arran and Aaron are different names. Never heard of Arron. I'd go for Arran (Ah-ran).

AvoidingRealHumans · 27/04/2020 13:03

Definitely Aaron. I know a little Arran, his mum is turkish so I assumed (wrongly?) that it was the Turkish spelling because I've only ever known it spelt Aaron

dementedpixie · 27/04/2020 13:05

I'm in Scotland and would pronounce Aaron as Arran.

Elouera · 27/04/2020 13:05

Aaron is the most common, and less likely to spend all day having to spell it out to people.

Any other spelling will have to be: 'My name is Aaron, that's A-r-r-a-n. Double R not a double A.'

PaquitaVariation · 27/04/2020 13:05

My friend has a ds Arron, he’s 10 and people still don’t know how to spell it.

daisypond · 27/04/2020 13:06

Arran after the island. Aaron is air-on, very different.

Spied · 27/04/2020 13:06

Aaron

Inconnu · 27/04/2020 13:07

Aaron

weebarra · 27/04/2020 13:08

I'm in Scotland so it's not an uncommon name here. If you're calling him after the island, definitely Arran. Aaron is pronounced differently.

ofwarren · 27/04/2020 13:08

Aaron

dementedpixie · 27/04/2020 13:12

I have never pronounced Aaron as Airon and I know a couple. They pronounce it as Arran

PeskyRooks · 27/04/2020 13:13

Aaron which I would pronounce to rhyme with Sharon.

CoconutLime · 27/04/2020 13:17

I know a few people with the spelling Aaron. All of them use the Arran pronunciation, and I have never heard anyone call them Ay-ron. We’re all Scottish also.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 27/04/2020 13:19

I’ve known a few Arrans and we live in Ayrshire and can see Arran (the island) from our front door.

midnightstar66 · 27/04/2020 13:35

I'm scottish, I know plenty Aaron's and Arrans. They are pronounced the same. If you like the island and don't want people pronouncing it Ay Ron like it sounds as so e do, I'd stick with Arran.

wehaveafloater · 27/04/2020 13:36

Like the beautiful isle - no other spelling will keep the link.

Gatehouse77 · 27/04/2020 13:39

Aaron I would pronounce Air-on (as in bible).
Arran I would pronounce phonetically A-ron

yatapina · 27/04/2020 13:41

I'm Scottish and know lots of Aaron's (I really like it but DH never did). All but one is Aaron is in Sharon.

The one who isn't is English.

RevIMJolly · 27/04/2020 13:43

We’re thinking about calling our puppy Brodick.

Peachbubble · 27/04/2020 13:44

If you want it linked to the Scottish isle, then I'd spell it Arran.
Aaron is biblical and pronounced Air-ron.

ScarfLadysBag · 27/04/2020 13:46

Yes, I'm also Scottish and have never met a Scottish Air-ron, but have met both Aarons and Arrans, both pronounced the same.
