Hello all!

I'm quite set on the name in the title but a bit stumped on how to spell...I'm taking inspiration from the beautiful west coast Scottish island as has meaning to me and the other half and it's the only name we actually agree on - but for a name Arran is not a common way to spell and I don't want my boy to go through life always having to correct people on how to spell his name!

Keen to see if there is an overall consensus on spelling!!!

Thanks in advance! Smile

Are people who think Aaron is pronounced in fact from the US? I've never heard it pronounced like that in the U.K. - ever.

happinessinayellowbottle · 27/04/2020 19:35

Aaron. All the Aaron’s I know rhyme with Sharon not air-on

Brendabob12 · 27/04/2020 19:38

Unfortunately I do not want to comment on this because I absolutely detest this name and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Angry

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 27/04/2020 19:48

I would always pronounce Aaron as Air-on.

Mind you, I have taught Aaron called Air-on, Aaron called Arran, and Arran, Arron, Aran, Aron, Arun, Arren, Arrun, Arin and Arrin all called Arran.

Xylophonics · 27/04/2020 19:55

Arran definitely

CaffiSaliMali · 27/04/2020 20:46

The only Aaron I know pronounces it Air-run - he's early 30s. As do Priests at Church and as did my Religious Studies teachers at school. It's a very old biblical name derived from Aharon, the brother of Moses.

Aaron... My DS is named this pronounced Ah-Ron not Airon.

Never yet had it mis spelled or mis pronounced yet Smile we are northern England

It seems unlikely since most on Mumsnet are British - I went to school in Britain with an Aaron pronounced Air-on but know of American Aarons pronounced Ah-ran!

Toni464356 · 27/04/2020 21:07

Thanks for all the lovely comments back!

We're Scottish so definitely think there is an accent element - I've never known Aaron to be pronounced Air-Ron but it's given me food for thought maybe Arran is the way to go....I've a unisex name myself so I'm used to correcting people with my name and it's not normally a big deal! Thanks all - appreciate yin raking the time to help!

Also to the lady who detests the name - thanks for sharing - just as well your not using it in that case and I hope you've found awesome names for your babies.

Definately aaron.

ChurchOfWokeApostate · 27/04/2020 21:10

I’m from London and have a heard Aaron as both Arun and airon.
I’d go with Arran if you want Arun, then there’s no ambiguity

VeniceBeach · 27/04/2020 21:10

Arran is lovely OP! I love that spelling personally.

No, I’m from northern England but now live in the south. I see it may be different in Scotland, but all sites I can see where you google English pronunciation say it is normally like Air-un.

GingerBeverage · 27/04/2020 21:18

I know an Aron, as another option.

ShrekandDonkey · 27/04/2020 21:25

DH's name is Arron. When giving his name he always has to spell it out!

123Dancewithme · 27/04/2020 21:46

I prefer Aaron

My OH is an Arran. Not that I'm biased but I think it's a great name and definitely spell it that way if you are taking inspiration from the island. Saying that, he has still had people call him 'Air-un' and is constantly having his name misspelt.

Nicnac1998 · 28/04/2020 08:29

My cousin is called Aarran

NightingalesAtDawn · 28/04/2020 08:38

If you're specifically inspired by the beautiful island, it would be pretty stupid to call him anything but Arran. Why confuse things with Arron which is not the island at all?
Aaron is completely different name in my mind, pronounced AIR-ron but I know not everyone agrees with me on this. The only one I can think of knowing, a Jewish boy in my class at high school, was definitely AIR-ron.

You dont want to comment but you 'detest the name and wouldn't wish on your worst enemy'

What happened to just not commenting?!

FinallySleeping · 28/05/2020 10:02

Much prefer the Arran spelling and meaning if the Island is special to you. With Aaron I'm always unsure if it's a-ron or air-ron.

Ls261 · 28/05/2020 10:07

From north Scotland and I've never heard Aaron be pronounced air-ron always ar-ron, rhythms with sharon.

BeMorePacific · 28/05/2020 22:22

I’d use Arran or Aaron x
