Initials OAP

Carolebaskinssardineoil · 26/04/2020 18:41

Would the initials OAP put you off naming your child the first and second names you really love?
Obviously not a lot can be done about the last initial as our surname starts with a P.
We think that it’s not an ideal combination of initials but that it’s not so awful to the point of us not being able to go with our first choice.
Just wondered if anyone has any views on this?
It would be for a girl if that makes a difference.

No one really cares about initials. The amount of time someone writes their full name is minimal.

Thefaceofboe · 26/04/2020 18:50

It makes no difference. OAP isn’t exactly offensive

DramaAlpaca · 26/04/2020 18:52

It's not bad but I'd be tempted to add a second middle name. Some people sign work documents with full initials. It shouldn't matter though.

MikeUniformMike · 26/04/2020 18:53

It will be OP most of the time.

Doyouwantanothercuppa · 26/04/2020 18:54

They will be ridiculed throughout school. Particularly secondary school. Initials are used a lot on registers etc and kids always pick up in things like that.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 26/04/2020 18:55

No, because you rarely use middle names and 90% of people won’t know the middle name.

Shockers · 26/04/2020 18:56

I very much doubt they will be ridiculed.

HandfulOfFlowers · 26/04/2020 19:00

OAP isn't like having BUM or ASS or something. I doubt anyone would care.

TheThingWithFeathers · 26/04/2020 19:03

I wouldn't, but I'm funny about things like that.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2020 19:15

No one really cares about initials.

I would.
Maybe it was because of Reginald Iolanthe Perrin in my formative years.

I'm sure middle names starting with a J are over represented because they stop initials from spelling words or sounds.

KittenVsBox · 26/04/2020 19:27

I'd put another middle name in.
It is surprising how often initials appear. Yes, I took my husbands surname, and am now ASS.

pinkpinecone · 26/04/2020 19:31

I wouldn't worry as middle names aren't used that much so they'll most probably just be known as OP at school.

In general I don't think initials are an issue unless they spell something really bad or offensive, even then Boris Johnson's initials haven't held him back in life.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2020 19:38

Boris Johnson's initials haven't held him back in life.

ABPJ? (Not sure if there should be a d in the middle of that) Grin

WorriedMummyNow · 26/04/2020 19:40

Oh please don't do this! Yes, he'll be bullied.

Ummm why?? What is so wrong with OAP?

HildaSnibbs · 26/04/2020 21:04

I can't imagine anyone would notice at school. And even if they did OAP really isn't that funny... if something even vaguely toilet humour related I'd maybe think twice!

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2020 22:01

What is so wrong with OAP?

It'll make them the butt of jokes when they're 5 years short of retirement age (which by the will be oh, about 76 I guess)

WendyDarling888 · 26/04/2020 22:07

Wouldn't worry about that OP. Unless it was something like BUM or FUC. Initials are rarely used for anything, especially all three initials.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 27/04/2020 00:25

At my daughter's school, each girl had their initials embroidered on their PE shirts and skorts.

Ellmau · 27/04/2020 12:08

And actually the OAP abbreviation is falling out of use imo - it's all seniors or older people nowadays, or just pensioners with the old age part forgotten, and I bet that will continue.

Shockers · 28/04/2020 15:40

Surely embroidered initials would only be forename and surname though.

MikeUniformMike · 29/04/2020 14:44

No. It's usually the full set.
First and last usually end in many duplicates.

FizzyGreenWater · 29/04/2020 14:45

Only if it's Olivia

pinkpinecone · 29/04/2020 14:56

If you're worried OP, maybe put another middle name in? Having 4 initials is very common these days lots of kids have name, middle name plus double barrelled surname or name, two middle names, last name.
