When a friend of a friend was pregnant she floated the name Ireland (this is in Canada). Everyone’s quiet response and horrified faces put a stop to it.

There’s lots of lovely Irish names based on places that people do like; Clodagh, Kerry, Erin.

There's nothing wrong with it at all - it's a very nice name - but until the day I die, I will never be able to hear the name Clodagh without thinking of the TOG who used to regularly write in to Terry Wogan: Clodagh Rubbish Grin

On another thread, we've been discussing the dearth of babies called Fermanagh, Belturbet, Tubbercurry, and Borris-in-Ossory. And surely there's a Goth somewhere dying to call a baby Schull...? Grin

RingaRosie · 24/04/2020 11:29

Folk would hear “Isla” as it’s a popular name. A soft R is quite common in parts of the UK, unlike the hard R you hear in Ireland (the name, and the place.
My name sounds totally different, in different accents, due to the R in the middle.

JaneJeffer · 24/04/2020 11:36

Or Emo Hayfevered?

FlaskMaster · 24/04/2020 11:38

No man is an Island. But op's kid comes pretty close.
Place names are some people's cup of tea, but FFS don't pick one that ends in "land". Or "stan" for that matter.

JaneJeffer · 24/04/2020 11:40

Well at least then they could be called Stan for short, better than Land.

FerryCrossTheMersey · 24/04/2020 11:45

Oh I know of a girl called Irish, she’s probably about 18 now

onalongsabbatical · 24/04/2020 11:55

Wanted opinions.
Got opinions.
Grin

Hayfevered · 24/04/2020 12:15

@JaneJeffer, I have always avoided going to Emo to preserve my illusion that it's inhabited solely by misunderstood teenagers wearing panda rings of black eyeliner with carefully-tended Bebo pages.

JaneJeffer · 24/04/2020 12:21

I hope it is a Shangri-La for goths Hayfevered Grin

campion · 24/04/2020 12:24

Prefer Wales. More appropriate for a baby.

Hayfevered · 24/04/2020 12:33

I mean, I know Emo Court used to be a Jesuit training college, but still, every time I imagine it, I see the Jesuits wearing eyeliner and listening to My Chemical Romance.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/04/2020 14:23

No man is an Island

Plenty of die-hard TT Race fans would strongly disagree with you there....

BendyLikeBeckham · 24/04/2020 17:04

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll Grin I see what you did there!!!

JaneJeffer · 24/04/2020 17:07

Well Donne SausageRoll

BendyLikeBeckham · 24/04/2020 17:08

I think the OP has legged it to Tipperary. Has anyone told her it's a long way?

Another thread follows the same pattern:

OP: Can I have your opinions on this?

Everyone: No, don't do it. Bad bad idea.

OP: I'm going to do it. I didn't want your opinions and fuck you all.

Everyone: but, but, we have more jokes and puns and stuff...come back!!

JaneJeffer · 24/04/2020 17:42
Grin
Chelsie2020 · 24/04/2020 19:11

@BendyLikeBeckham what do you want me to say? I asked for general opinions and that’s it. Why don’t you get a life

Chelsie2020 · 24/04/2020 19:13

@onalongsabbatical yes that’s what I asked for, is that a problem? I am more determined to call my child Ireland. I can’t wait to tell everyone Smile

SliAnCroix · 25/04/2020 17:28

@janejeffer , has cutbush been suggested?
I have a lovely glamorous school friend who lives there and i had a childish chortle at the name of her village.

JaneJeffer · 25/04/2020 17:55

Should be twinned with Nutbush Grin

Chelsie2020 · 25/04/2020 18:22

@JaneJeffer good suggestion I will use that when I have my second
