Astronica · 19/04/2020 11:26

Not different at all. I know several young Indies. Pretty enough.

35andThriving · 19/04/2020 11:34

I think it will rise in popularity due to Joe Wicks.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 19/04/2020 11:53

It's what Indiana Jones' girlfriend calls him in one of the films

User24689 · 19/04/2020 12:56

Not keen. Better than India though.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/04/2020 13:46

Not a real name imo- it’s a nickname for India
Such as I wouldn’t call my child Kimmy I’d call her Kimberly and shorten it in every day use

user1477391263 · 19/04/2020 14:10

Hate it.

It sounds like a nickname.
It makes me think of Indiana Jones.
It's a ghastly twee name for a fee-paying school.

DariaMorgendorffer · 19/04/2020 14:12

I think it's sweet

Whatsyourflava · 19/04/2020 14:38

Absolutely LOVE it. It’s on my list.... near the top!
It’s still well outside the top 200 names so it’s pretty rare still and I’ve never met one yet despite years at baby groups

Merename · 19/04/2020 14:41

Don’t like, daft name. Know a few preschooler indies and it seems like a made up nickname to me rather than a real name.

lancashirelady · 19/04/2020 16:10

I had a beautiful golden retriever called indie. His full name was Indian Mist but we always called him Indie.

daisypond · 19/04/2020 16:21

I think it’s a little dated. I know two and they are both 12 or 13. In the same school class too. It’s that sort of generation to me.

Strongly disagree that Indie is dated- it’s never been common enough to date- it’s never been within the top 200 names for the past 30 years!

I love it! Unusual but familiar sounding - perfect!

One of my favourite names for a girl is the Indian name Indira. I think it's beautiful. I think Indie would be a lovely nick name for that. I don't like Indie as a stand alone name.

daisypond · 19/04/2020 18:03

Unusual but familiar sounding
I don’t think it is unusual, definitely not when you add in Indie or Indi as short for India or Indigo as well. It’s just a generic bland no-name - to me.

User24689 · 20/04/2020 16:30

@sallywd I also absolutely love Indira. I would have used it for my DD but felt like it would be too odd as I don't have any links to indian culture.

FizzyGreenWater · 20/04/2020 16:58

I like it, although there are many points above I also agree with!!

It would be best as a nickname. India, Indira, Indigo.

Whatsyourflava · 20/04/2020 17:12

I also think the name Indie is unusual but familiar but suppose what is “unusual” is subjective. Looking at the official stats figures from ONS, I still consider the name to be unusual but appreciate you do not @daisypond

Indi - 62 baby girls given this name in 2018
India - 275 given this name
Indie - 218 given this name

(I actually think of India and Indie as being pretty distinct names but appreciate you do not)

None of these names are rocketing in popularity if you compare them to the graphs of names like Arlo for example.

A total of 555 babies with the names Indi/Indie or india . That TOTAL figure equates to around the number of babies that were named “Felicity”in 2018 when that name was number 100 in the charts.

87Callista · 20/04/2020 19:55

Really not keen. But if you like it go for it.
I'm not keen on my OHs make either but his name hasn't stopped me loving him and his mum must of liked it!

87Callista · 20/04/2020 19:56

Name, not make. Whoops!

Jamiladodger · 20/04/2020 21:29

I think : India & Indie music

hoping2018 · 20/04/2020 22:13

I know a three year old indira who gets called indi. I must admit I wasn't keen at first but I like it now

Figgygal · 20/04/2020 22:14

Cute for a girl but not so practical for a grown woman

DramaAlpaca · 21/04/2020 03:49

It's better than India, that's about all I can say, it sounds like a diminutive without a full name to go with it Confused The full name wouldn't be India, that's a country not a name.
