Otto or Rudy?

We’re due baby 3 (keeping it a surprise) and wondering which people prefer between Otto or Rudy? I’ve worked with children for a long old time so it makes it tricky when picking although I’ve never taught an Otto or a Rudy.

If it were my choice entirely I would have Bruno but I’m conscious of the associations with the Sacha Baron Cohen film mainly ( I’m not fussed about it being seen as a dog name as my eldest son has a name typically associated with dogs).

We loved Rex but it sounds too similar to the shortening of my daughter’s name and I think they’d forever be mishearing when I call up the stairs in future so we’ve discounted that.

Thanks in advance.

Rudy just reminds me of Guiliani but Otto I would only use if I were of German descent. What about Otis or Roddy?
Sorry I know that doesn’t help you chose but I guess gives perspective on how people might see the names.

RoryGilmoree · 18/04/2020 16:37

Love both Rudy and Otto but I'd probably go with Otto!

mooching · 18/04/2020 16:39

Otto is lovely and was a final contender for DS. Rudy too American for me, nothing wrong with American but I don't have links to it (DH's family has German roots).

Letthemysterybe · 18/04/2020 16:42

I think that they are both great names. I like Bruno too and wouldn’t let the film association stop me from using it.

Blursula · 18/04/2020 16:47

I prefer Otto to Rudy. I wouldn’t associate Bruno with Sacha Baron Cohen at all!

TenShortStories · 18/04/2020 16:50

Prefer Otto to Rudy, but love Bruno the most.

userabcname · 18/04/2020 16:51

I love the name Otto.

golddustwomen · 18/04/2020 17:08

Rudy. Brilliant name Grin

diddlediddle · 18/04/2020 18:03

I know a few Ottos. I'd probably pick Rudy but they're both nice.

Much better than Bruno, thank goodness you're not choosing that!

Peachbubble · 18/04/2020 18:27

I'd choose Otto.

GertiMJN · 18/04/2020 18:29

Of those 2 choices I'd say Otto, but would add Otis for consideration

DramaAlpaca · 18/04/2020 18:29

Of the two, Otto is the one I dislike least. Both are better than Bruno or Rex.

Whatsyourflava · 18/04/2020 18:30

Rudy and Otto are two of my very favourite names 😍😍😍 I honestly can’t pick between them. I’ve never met an Otto but the little Rudy I know is the coolest kid ever so (maybe because of the association) I vote Rudy. But Otto is such a great name too

Whatsyourflava · 18/04/2020 18:30

I don’t like Bruno sorry

daisypond · 18/04/2020 18:38

Otto is fine. Rudy is OK only if short for Rudolph or something - which I like. Rudy is definitely not a name in itself. I don’t think of the Bruno film at all. It would never occur to me. I don’t mind Bruno.

pinkpinecone · 18/04/2020 19:47

I prefer Otto

Chinchinn · 18/04/2020 19:50

I know a Bruno in his late twenties and his profile picture is Sacha baron Cohen, but no one else ever thinks of the film...he just has a great sense of humour and is a fan on the actor! I think of Bruno Mars actually!

missyB1 · 18/04/2020 19:54

I work in a school there are a few Ottos, I’m a bit meh about it. Rudy just doesn’t work here in my opinion.
Ralph or Rufus are nicer alternatives.

Monsterjam · 18/04/2020 19:58

I’ve got a Rudy so that name gets my vote

SnowdropFox · 18/04/2020 20:18

Rudy for me

BarbaraBeast · 18/04/2020 20:34

Thank you for all the feedback so far.
For everyone who suggested Otis, I really like this name but my son is called Milo and although I haven’t personally seen it, I’m aware of a pug/cat combo of the same names in a film from the 80’s! Lovely name though

Milo and Rudy (is DD Lex, by any chance? You'd mentioned Rex being close to her NN.)
I really love Rudy. My neighbour's son is Rudy (he's going on 9 now) and it's such a cool name and he is the loveliest boy ever.

BarbaraBeast · 18/04/2020 20:52

Good guess-we call her Hetts (I know it’s not exactly the same as Rex but when we say it I’m aware that it has the same tone and “eh” sound in the middle) Smile

Definitely not Milo and Otto, not sure that fits well. Maybe Rudy is better.

Jamiladodger · 22/04/2020 23:57

I think I slightly prefer Rudy but I really do like them both.
Milo and Rudy / Milo and Otto are both nice sibling pairs though. Sorry if I haven't helped much.
