Boys name help!

Hi,
We are expecting at the end of July and we are very much struggling with boys names! (We don't know the gender, but are are happy with our girls choice).
We like old/traditional/ classic, but then also don't want something super common. We have a daughter named Evelyn already.
We have recently decided we quite liked Rupert, however I wondered if it sounded too posh? Or if I really like the way it sounds when said aloud (I feel the 't' kind of gets missed? ) So I started to think of Reuben as it rolls of the tongue easier.
So...

Rupert or Reuben?

Our other shortlist names are,

Thomas (very common, I know, but I do like it!)
Oscar

Which do you like? Or any any suggestions welcome!

Of those, I like Oscar best. How about Robert? Rory? Rowan?

SallyWD · 15/04/2020 07:54

I like Thomas and Oscar best. I know so many little Rubens and not many boys called Thomas.

SallyWD · 15/04/2020 07:55

If you like Rupert go for it. To me it's a real posh boys name.

Menopauseandteensdontmix100 · 15/04/2020 07:58

Of your suggestions I like Thomas best.

emmathedilemma · 15/04/2020 08:02

I like Thomas best and I'm not sure it's as popular as you might think.....all the ones I know are heading towards their teens now. Oscar is cute but it still one of those names that I struggle to imagine on an adult. Not a of Rupert, I think it's very public school. Reuben is ok but it does seem to be popular at the moment.

sorryiasked · 15/04/2020 08:08

I like Rupert but it does tend to get shortened to "Roop" which I hate Smile
Reuben is nice.
I only know one Thomas who is 10.

LarkDescending · 15/04/2020 08:09

I love Rupert and think it is now entirely mainstream rather than posh.
Reuben is nice, but people seem to struggle with the spelling and if you are like me that would get annoying!

Enough4me · 15/04/2020 08:14

Thomas

ps1991 · 15/04/2020 08:15

We have a Robin and we love it! We shorten it to all sorts of things, Rob, Bob, Bobby...but I still love the name Robin

Happywith2 · 15/04/2020 08:17

We have a Henry.
I think Rupert is lovely tho

CMMum88 · 15/04/2020 08:22

My wee one has Thomas as his middle name :) I think there are lots of older thomas' but not many little ones.

Evelyn and rupert sound nicer together then Evelyn and Reuben. Oscar is lovely too but think thomas or rupert are nicer with evelyn! Great name choices.

Whatsyourflava · 15/04/2020 09:11

Thomas is no where near as popular as it used to be. It’s numbers have declined year on year for the past 20 years if you look at the official statistics

I really like all your names; Rueben, Rupert, thomas and Oscar. I’d probably say my least favourite is Reuben because there are so many Roman/Rohan/Rowan/Roan’s about now and the name sound slightly similar (though hopefully wouldn’t get muddled as it starts with “Ru” sound rather than all the others that start with “Ro”.)

My favourite of your names is Thomas but they are all nice

Whatsyourflava · 15/04/2020 09:51

By the time your baby arrives, Reuben will probably be higher up the charts than Thomas if you look at the growth trajectories using the official statistics; Reuben is on a continual steep increase and Thomas numbers dropping for past 20 years.

CookieDoodles · 15/04/2020 12:10

Thanks for your suggestions and replies so far! So I'm thinking maybe Reuben is much more common than I thought then. However, it seems my hubby has warmed further to it!
Maybe I should just go with a classic Thomas then. I've always liked it, and if we didn't use it a first name, it would definitely always be a second name

Rupert is really nice and is my favourite, but you can’t go wrong with Thomas. Oscar is OK too, but it’s quite a 20-something name you me. Not Reuben. It’s faddy, and part of the trend for Old Testament boys’ names that is already very out of fashion. Robert would be good.

Whatsyourflava · 15/04/2020 12:33

Thomas is so beautiful and classic. I bet you’ll find you come across more Reubens than Thomas’ @CookieDoodles

Finnemoo · 15/04/2020 13:17

I like Rupert a lot. Also Thomas. Never been too keen on Reuben.

Oscar is nice but I do know lots of young Oscars if you wanted to avoid anything too popular. How about Arthur?

Aber9 · 15/04/2020 19:16

Love Rupert and Thomas

87Callista · 15/04/2020 19:26

Love Thomas could be a Tommy

CookieDoodles · 15/04/2020 20:10

Thank you everyone Smile we have now decided on Thomas for definite, with middle name Maxwell. I was trying out different names that sounded right with Thomas and we both liked this one! (I always loved Max, hubby wasn't keen, but he likes Maxwell. He says he likes the fact it's a bit different, likes the fact it's in a Beatles song and he says it sounds like a strong middle name!)

So we'll have
Thomas Maxwell J.....

Just you bet we have another girl after all this!
(In which case she will either be Lottie Florence or Lottie Elizabeth)

Thanks so much for your help!

My order of preference, though I like them all, is:
Oscar
Thomas
Rupert

Cross post.
Thomas Maxwell is lovely.
