Is Odon too unusual?

Looking for thoughts on the name Odon for a boy. I like the sound of it as although it’s uncommon it’s close to more popular names such as Auden and Odin but with an alternative spelling. On my baby names app it is described as a name of English origin meaning wealthy defender, which I thought was quite cool. Plus I love the nicknames ‘don’ and ‘donny’.
I’ve asked the opinions of family members and so far no one is very keen...?

It could get shortened to Od...

ofwarren · 14/04/2020 19:19

I don't hate it but I definitely prefer Odin.
I've never heard of it to be honest, but it's not a horrible sounding name. Go for it if you like it.

Soubriquet · 14/04/2020 19:21

Looks like you misspelled Odin...

Pulpfiction1 · 14/04/2020 19:22

Yes and it makes me think of noodles.

Pannacottaformeplease · 14/04/2020 19:22

Makes me think of Odor - the US spelling of Odour.

grincheux · 14/04/2020 19:25

Made me think of noodles too.

MikeUniformMike · 14/04/2020 19:25

It will get lengthened to Mastodon

lemontreebird · 14/04/2020 19:31

Isn't it tooth in Greek?

TitianaTitsling · 14/04/2020 19:33

I thought of the cinema chain Odeon...

lyingwanker · 14/04/2020 19:34

@MikeUniformMike 😂

Sounds like you wanted Odin but wanted to be a bit different

taptonaria27 · 14/04/2020 19:34

I thought Odeon too- terrible idea

Glowcat · 14/04/2020 19:34

Tologist.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2020 19:36

It's not 'unusual' - it's a bad idea, for all the reasons mentioned.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 14/04/2020 19:39

It looks as if you stuck a pin in the menu in a Japanese restaurant. Not a good idea.

AMomHasNoName · 14/04/2020 19:41

I thought you'd put Odeon too at first. What about Odin ?

YangShanPo · 14/04/2020 19:42

Grin at mastodon. The full name for the birth certificate.

IWantT0BreakFree · 14/04/2020 19:43

I think it sounds like a deodorant brand Blush sorry OP

Wheresthebiffer2 · 14/04/2020 19:43

There was a Star Trek character called Odo. He was not a human.

BilboBercow · 14/04/2020 19:46

Apparently it's Anglo Saxon. There's a reason it's no longer in use op. What about egbert?

TheWordmeister · 14/04/2020 19:48

I like Odin, but Odon looks wrong.

This thread is making me and my son laugh though.

AlexaShutUp · 14/04/2020 19:50

Sorry, I think of noodles too. I know they're udon, but it sounds too similar.

mglk · 14/04/2020 19:51

It’s made me laugh a lot too 😂 And to be fair all comments a pretty valid Odon will be coming off the list!

Bloody awful

More than a bit downmarket and chavvy

And sounds like a noodle

If you want to shorten it to a nickname like "donny" then call him "donny"

Ritascornershop · 14/04/2020 20:07

Reminds me of Udon noodles too. And please people, don’t call your kids Odin, it sounds like you’re members of a neo-Nazi organisation.
