What do you think of Calla for a girl?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Never heard of it. Did you make it up? Sounds like "Carla" in a Leeds accent.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 13/04/2020 21:00

I prefer Callie

bridgetreilly · 13/04/2020 21:01

As in Calla lilies?

It's not the worst made-up name I've heard.

crabette · 13/04/2020 21:12

Immediately think of lillies? Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as you don't mind that it's a traditional funeral / sympathy flower?

It's a lovely sounding name, and the Greek word for beautiful, is that right? Similar to Callie but I think prettier. Nice for something different but not crazy made up.

hellosunshine5 · 13/04/2020 21:17

I’ve never heard of it!

Not sure I like it to be honest - it just doesn’t sound like a name when I say it out loud, sorry.

The first thing that came to my mind is calor gas Blush

Voice0fReason · 13/04/2020 21:20

Not a fan. Doesn't actually sound like a name at all.

TheHarryFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 13/04/2020 21:31

I know two Callas. Unusual but pretty.

CeibaTree · 13/04/2020 22:08

How about Calluna?

GetTheSprinkles · 13/04/2020 22:09

No. Reminds me of the Spanish word for street

Pops1985 · 13/04/2020 22:10

I know a Calla, I like it

ReallyLoveChickens · 13/04/2020 22:10

I know a Calla. Mum and Dad are from the Philippines. She’s really cute.

3xmother · 13/04/2020 22:12

Kayla is nice

expatinspain · 13/04/2020 22:14

The translation in Spanish of calla is 'shut up'.

daisypond · 13/04/2020 22:15

It’s OK, yes. I rather like it. I think Calla lily too, but that’s fine.

wowfudge · 13/04/2020 22:16

We don't call them shut up lilies though, do we? And the OP has not stated the pronunciation of the double l will be like that in Spanish.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 13/04/2020 22:18

Well it means beach.

How about Camille?

LotusClover · 13/04/2020 22:18

Doesn't sound like a proper name to me, seems made up. Prefer Callie or Carla

ofwarren · 13/04/2020 22:20

In the north, it might be mistaken for Carla.

TheWashingMachine · 13/04/2020 22:22

Lovely, I know a very elegant girl called Calla

Honeywort · 13/04/2020 22:22

It’s a lily to me, so fine as a floral type name.

Enough4me · 13/04/2020 22:23

Never heard of it, but really like Callie.

BabbleBee · 13/04/2020 22:23

Never heard it as a name before, but I do like calla lillies! It has the potential to be one of those “how do you spell that” names though.

UnrulySalvia · 13/04/2020 22:25

It's nice (I also think of Calla lilies - used to have loads in my garden but pulled them up when we got a cat which was very sad as they were beautiful..)

ilikebigbuttsandicannotlie · 13/04/2020 22:29

Never heard of it. Caliope shortened to Callie is nice.

Tillygetsit · 13/04/2020 23:21

It IS a real name:

"The name Calla is a girl's name of Greek origin meaning "beautiful". Calla is a lily name that is much more distinctive and delicate than Lily. Rarely heard today, it did appear in the popularity lists in the last decades of the nineteenth century."

I like it.
