can't decide the spelling
You can't decide whether to spell it correctly or make up your own version??

BroomstickOfLove · 09/04/2020 23:04

It's not a made-up version. It's just a lot more common in Vietnam than it is in the UK.

ilikebigbuttsandicannotlie · 09/04/2020 23:43

Lynn if you’re going to pick one of the two.

It’s an odd choice though. It’s like calling a baby Debbie or Glenda.

Blursula · 10/04/2020 09:25

It’s Vietnamese. God there are some bloody vile people on these threads.

Ineedabreak19 · 10/04/2020 09:32

The op should have said that she was considering the Vietnamese spelling for the name. Have you got Vietnamese ancestry op? Mentioning that would have prevented the pile......

Ineedabreak19 · 10/04/2020 09:33

Pile on

4amWitchingHour · 10/04/2020 09:42

I know a Lynn in her 20s - it's pretty lame to think a name belongs to one generation

Abracad · 10/04/2020 09:45

Neither

Orphlids · 10/04/2020 09:58

@Blursula, spot on. I can’t believe my eyes sometimes. How odd to think they get pleasure from these small acts of unkindness.

AcrobaticCardigan · 10/04/2020 09:58

“What the fuck is Lynh??”

Took the words right out of my mouth!

Ruddle91 · 10/04/2020 10:11

Why not add a silent k at the beginning - Klinh

CodenameVillanelle · 10/04/2020 10:58

Ok
It's a Vietnamese name. Apologies to any Vietnamese people I've offended. When a poster comes on to a uk baby name site and says what about 'normal U.K. spelling of commonly used name' or 'apparently totally made up an non phonetic spelling of same name' they are going to get the piss taken. It's not the same as someone coming and saying 'we are Vietnamese, we like Lynh, it's a Vietnamese name, what do you think'?

florascotia2 · 10/04/2020 11:46

What Villanelle said.

BroomstickOfLove · 10/04/2020 12:00

Or you could see an unusual spelling of a name, assume the poster has a reason for choosing that spelling, have a quick google and learn something new instead of jumping in to sneer.

Orphlids · 10/04/2020 12:08

Yes, if only the OP could have predicted that so many people’s default setting is “rude and intentionally hurtful”. She shouldn’t need to add mitigating factors to prevent people being horrible. If your initial reaction to any post is to be really rude, but you can somehow control yourself if it turns out the OP might not be British, then the chances are you’re a bit of a turd. Unless of course you’re foreign. Then it’s ok.

MashedSpud · 10/04/2020 12:12

Lynn is so dated.

The last child I knew called lynn was in 1979.

DangerCat01 · 10/04/2020 12:15

I know a man Lyn

florascotia2 · 10/04/2020 12:18

But Lynh is NOT an "unusual spelling of a name". It is an entirely diffferent name from Lynne, with different origins, different meaning, different linguistic heritage and cultural context etc.

However, Lynh was presented by the OP as a straightforward alternative to the conventional name Lynne, in exactly the same way as many, many previous posters have asked for opinions about different spellings of a name - eg Annabel or Annabelle, Louis or Lewis, Niamh or Neve. The OP actually said that she "can't decide the spelling" That was what confused people.

As Villanelle says, no-one wants to offend, but if people are directly asked by the OP about the spelling of a name, then that is what they are going to comment on.

Orphlids · 10/04/2020 12:25

Plenty of people in this thread have hoped to offend. Must be really (if inexplicably) satisfying for them.

CodenameVillanelle · 10/04/2020 12:33

To be honest I don't feel bad at all about taking the piss out of stupid names/spellings of names.

87Callista · 10/04/2020 12:54

Lynn

BananaPlant · 10/04/2020 17:52

Lynn if you really have to. It’s such a dull name though, completely ‘meh’. Nothing about it.

Buttercup54321 · 12/04/2020 00:37

Very dated. Lynn if you must. The alternative is awful and looks made up.
All the Lynn, Linda and Lynseys I know are late 40s to mid 60s.
Lynette is better. Or Evelyn.

user3274826 · 12/04/2020 00:41

What about Lydia?

KatherineJaneway · 12/04/2020 00:43

Never heard of Lynh. Looks like you added an extra letter bu accident.
