Meredith or Bronwen

I’m English and DH is welsh and we live in England but near to wales. We already have a DS Who has a welsh name but it has a nickname that’s easy for the English! We don’t know the sex of number 2 yet but if it’s a girl can’t decide between meredith or bronwen? What do people think? Thanks

Thanks everyone, Meredith seems to be winning (which my DH will be pleased about) @WutheringFrights - does your daughter go by any nicknames/shortened versions?

I don't like Meredith at all, although I like Meredydd, which is a welsh boy's name, and doesn't sound the same. Meredith sounds harsh and masculine.

Bronwen is lovely, but for some strange reason people misspell it. Branwen is nice too.

As Mike says Meredith is an anglicisation of a Welsh boys name, used for girls.

I like it, but don't feel I could use it as I'd never hear the end of it from my family! It is nice though and if you both like it, go for it - it's only your opinion which matters.

Bronwen is nice, and not as popular as names like Eira and Seren. It feels quite classic. It will be misspelled and mispronounced as Bronwyn though, so be ready to correct.

Love Meredith (also Merryn) but dislike Bronwen (I know two, who both get called Bronnie, which just sounds 'rough' to my ears...could be accent related though, yours might sound different). The only Meredith I know gets called Edith or Edie.

WutheringFrights · 09/04/2020 09:31

@hoping2018 one of her friends at school calls her ‘Mare’ which I’m not a massive fan of but it’s up to her. If you watch greys anatomy that’s what her name is shortened to there.

When she was born and we told my folks her name my Dad said ‘that’s a good strong name, she’ll go far with that’ 💕

I grew up in a Welsh speaking area and Bronwyn got a bit teased (look up the translation).
Someone up thread mentioned my name Smile

Sheshallbenameless1 · 09/04/2020 09:42

Love Meredith!

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2020 09:57

@Coldemort. It is Bronwen. See my pp.

Becles · 09/04/2020 10:03

I know two Bronwyns who are great.

90% of the time we use the full name and then nicknamed Bron

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2020 10:11

The name is Bronwen @Becles. If you understood Welsh you'd realise how bad the Bronwyn spelling is.
If you look up what Bron is, you''ll see why the nn is unfortunate.

Umnoway · 09/04/2020 10:16

Meredith.

Crystal87 · 09/04/2020 10:23

Neither are great but Bronwen is up there with the worst names I've ever heard. Frumpy and ugly. And yes I know a Bronwen.

Coldemort · 09/04/2020 10:23

Yeah... 'Bron' isn't great!
I do think it leaves the child open to be teased. Maybe not so much if you're in England, but then google...

ZebraKid71 · 09/04/2020 11:48

I love them both, sorry to be no help at all!

SallyWD · 09/04/2020 11:50

I love Bronwen, not keen on Meredith - just seems like a surname to me.

MissingSilence · 09/04/2020 11:51

I love Meredith
