We are struggling to name our new baby and can't decide between Isla or Etta.

Which do you prefer?

Etta!

aquamarine1 · 06/04/2020 18:43

Where in the country are you? In some places Etta won't be pronounced with a hard T (a lot of GLasgow for example).

Isla is a brilliant name - seriously beautiful.

sibbys · 06/04/2020 19:04

I love Isla!

shirleyschmidt · 06/04/2020 19:17

Etta! 💯

WillWinterEverEnd · 06/04/2020 19:28

I have a 3 week old Isla and love it.
Originally I was put off by how 'popular' it is but when I checked the actual numbers on ONS, I think out of nearly 80,000 babies a year, only about 3,000 were named Isla. Yes, a proportionately big chunk but 3,000 spread across the whole of the U.K. really isn't a lot.

SipChampagneLikeWeThirstay · 06/04/2020 19:29

100% Etta!

Cbeebiesrehab · 06/04/2020 19:43

100 times Etta!

Mummyshark2018 · 06/04/2020 19:45

I like Isla but agree it's too popular. Etta in my accent is very harsh and clunky

Afternooninthepark · 06/04/2020 19:46

Etta is just lovely. Isla is too but so common.

Blessedwithboys · 06/04/2020 19:51

Etta

AJTracey · 06/04/2020 20:03

Etta
Isla is a bit 5 years ago

allaboardthesinkingship · 06/04/2020 20:04

Another vote for Etta

kim1856 · 06/04/2020 20:08

Ah thank you all!!
It's so hard to pick.

I loved Isla until I realised how popular it is.
She really suits Isla as well!

She was going to be called Etta the whole way through pregnancy, then she came out looking nothing like an Etta!

She's never going to have a name!!

Isla definitely.

TheEndIsBillNighy · 06/04/2020 20:38

I have a 6 year old Isla; I’d had it picked out for years, and was one of the first of my friends to have children, so had no idea of its popularity. I moved to a small village when she was 2 weeks old and discovered she was one of 3 Islas living there!

If I had my chance again, I’d look into it more and choose something much less popular. I love Lottie, but I think that’s also pretty popular.

villamariavintrapp · 06/04/2020 21:22

I don't like Etta because of the terrorist association

Astronica · 07/04/2020 04:14

I prefer Isla. I realise it's a lot more popular but I find the sounds more appealing.

sibbys · 07/04/2020 06:24

How about Ella? Has a bit of Etta and a bit of Isla too.

Indecisivelurcher · 07/04/2020 06:57

@kim go with a name you love that suits her. You won't regret it.

Alwaysundecided · 07/04/2020 20:25

Choose the name you love but personally Isla is too popular for me. Not only is it popular but it sounds similar to all the Lila, Layla, Ayla, Lyra, Lola names that are so so popular for this generation and it has become boring.
If you still love it though use it or you will regret it. I think Etta I lovely.

Charis1503 · 07/04/2020 21:31

Isla is lovely- my dog is called isla but she is 11 so it was wayyyy less popular back then.

It really is so so so common now it would put me off BIG time.

Arietty - 'etty' for short.....

Assuming you like short names...

Cora
Mara
Tia
Connie
Willa
Alba

Etta doesn't sound like a name to me, maybe a shortning of something. I prefer Isla.

FrankieKnuckles · 08/04/2020 12:52

Etta, it's beautiful.
