How early did you choose baby names?

My DH and I have settled on a selection of 4 names (2 girls and 2 boys) that we love but I feel like we're a bit early in playing the naming game as baby isn't here until September....

When did you choose names?

Baby was due December. We choose 1 boy's name, 1 girl's name around July. The 20-week scan in mid-August showed he was a boy so we started calling him our chosen name between us. Over the autumn we chose a middle name for him. When he was born he was named instantly! Grin

We had a shortlist of 2 boys names and 2 girls name after a few months. We didn't make a final decision until dd was born but I we both knew which name we were leaning towards from 7 months or so.

BuffaloCauliflower · 04/04/2020 15:18

We already knew our boy and girl first names before I was pregnant

fellyjish · 04/04/2020 15:25

Joint shortlist made at about 32 weeks, name decided in hospital once he arrived!

ChillyB · 04/04/2020 15:29

We starting making a shortlist around 30 weeks. Our girl first name was pretty much set. We each and a top boys name. When DS was born he didn’t look like either name. Took us a week to name him but he did get a name that was on the shortlist. It really suits him too.

sestras · 04/04/2020 20:28

We decided when they were born.

TheGoatIsHere · 04/04/2020 20:43

We had no names, shortlists, etc. Waited until they were born (3) and just said that he/she looks like a , job done.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 04/04/2020 20:50

About 21/22 weeks.

NemophilistRebel · 04/04/2020 20:52

33 weeks , no name

Have a long list of potentials
Will decide after birth

MooseBreath · 04/04/2020 22:01

We started looking at around 12 weeks, had a girl name by 18 weeks. Found out we were having a boy at 20 week scan. Currently 32 weeks, and we're 99% sure the one we've chosen (found it at around 28 weeks) is the one we'll use.

Jossina · 04/04/2020 22:17

We always pick our top three and then meet the little one and decide. But the picking of those top three has gone right up until labour!

ofwarren · 04/04/2020 22:19

We decided after the 20 week scan with both boys.

Dyra · 04/04/2020 22:25

Didn't know what we were having, so we needed to pick one of each.

We had a girl's name picked out before the 12 week scan. Boy's name was an ongoing argument right up to the start of labour. We had both vetoed the other's favourite, and couldn't compromise on any other name.

Thank goodness baby was a girl!

Very close to the day with my first (son)- wouldn't be my first choice but I really like it.

With the other two (daughters), I pretty much knew their names from the day they were conceived. Especially dd1. Luckily DH was on board and agreed. They have great names :)

Proudpeacock · 04/04/2020 22:31

Girl name picked the day I found out I was pregnant. Kicked around a few boy names.

Needless to say we discovered it was a boy at the 20 week scan. Narrowed it down to 2 quite quickly but settled on one around 26 weeks.

Didn't tell anyone though in case changed our minds.

YakkityYakYakYak · 04/04/2020 22:33

We chose DDs name before I was even pregnant. We still toyed around with a few others but never found one we liked better. Lucky she was a girl because we could never agree on a boys name.

Lazydaisydaydream · 04/04/2020 22:34

I'm due in September. We've had a girls name picked out since my last pregnancy (I had a boy) which we will use this time. If it's another boy then we will use our shortlist and once he's born we'll see what "fits". With my son we had a shortlist of three names and it took us about six hours after he was born to make a final Decision.

DramaAlpaca · 04/04/2020 22:35

DC1 the day he was born.

DC2 & DC3 shortly after the 20 week scan, after we found out what they were.

OddshoesOddsocks · 04/04/2020 22:38

Dd3 due in 3 weeks- had a boy name picked since dd2 turned out to be a girl and we were set on a girl name from before even the first scan. Unfortunately now it’s been too long and I’ve put myself off it so at 37 weeks it’s back to the drawing board and I don’t like ANY other names!!

Peanut55 · 04/04/2020 22:40

11 days after he was born. We just couldn't decide.

LostInTheColonies · 04/04/2020 22:51

13 years before DD arrived - came across a name I loved and filed it away for future use in the event that I had a daughter! Lucky she was a girl Grin Still LOVE the name.

CoodleMoodle · 04/04/2020 22:54

We already had DD's name in mind when we were TTC, and as soon as we found out she was on the way, we agreed that she'd be that if she was a girl. She was, so there was no debate at all! Her name was more my choice than DH's, but he was happy to go with it. She's 6 now and it still suits her perfectly. We had no firm name for if she was a boy.

As for DS... We were still talking about it endlessly when I was 30+ weeks! We had no boy names we both liked, at all. Then one of us came up with his name - DH really liked it, I thought it was okay but not my favourite. We gave DD (4 at the time) a list of 3 or 4 names and asked her which one she liked, and she picked that one. Then she started calling him that and it stuck! I've come to like it a lot more, and it's just him. Most of the family call him a slightly longer version more often, though (IE Johnny rather than John).
