Matilda

My husband and I are due with our first this summer , we were so shocked to find out we are having a girl ! I know it’s 50:50 but we were both convinced we were having a boy . Both over the moon, especially my husband . We had a few names picked out but suddenly both decided we loved Matilda . We don’t know any Matilda’s and we wanted something uncommon but not ‘celebrity’ style unique names, just ordinary but not often heard. It’s easy to spell, nice nicknames to it (Husband likes the idea of calling her at Tilda as an at home nick name) and we just feel like that’s what she’s called now , but is it an ok name ?
Middle name will be Rose or Rosalie, we haven’t decided yet . Two syllable surname. Matilda Rose 🌹?
Thanks

Many congrats, Matilda Rose is a gorgeous name, I love it.

villamariavintrapp · 27/03/2020 08:14

It's lovely but pretty popular if that bothers you? Maybe more popular a couple of years ago, but still quite high in top 100.

fruitpastille · 27/03/2020 08:15

I love it but would not say it's uncommon. That doesn't matter though!

GaaaaarlicBread · 27/03/2020 08:30

Ah thanks everyone , it’s nice to know it’s a nice name ! We don’t mind if it’s in the top 100, just more of a ‘we don’t know many’ if that makes sense ? Not like Isabella, Gracie etc which are very common round here .

I love it 😊

Astronica · 27/03/2020 10:14

Matilda is a great name. Rose is ubiquitous as a middle name but Matilda Rose does sound great. I really dislike Rosalie. Matilda Rosamund for something different?

TheReluctantCountess · 27/03/2020 10:15

It’s a lovely name.

PlantPotting · 27/03/2020 11:04

I LOVE the name Matilda
If you look at the official government statistics, the number of babies called Matilda has been dropping year on year since 2016 so by the time your baby is here it will be even lower in the top 100
I always thing Matilda is great name as there’s so many nickname options if you wanted to use a nn

Marmite27 · 27/03/2020 11:06

It is quite popular. I had a lady at a baby group go crazy at me because mine is a Matilda and she thought hers would be the only one Hmm

We’d welcome you to the ranks with open arms though Wink

Buggedandconfused · 27/03/2020 11:07

I love Tilly

Marmite27 · 27/03/2020 11:15

And mine is a Tilda (or Tils or Tilsy) as Tilly would rhyme with her cousins name, and there’s only 2 weeks between them.

NoSauce · 27/03/2020 11:36

I love Matilda.

MKCH · 27/03/2020 12:10

I have a three month old Matilda! We call her Matty.
(Yes I know that with a 'y' it's really the shortened version of Matthew but I'm not a fan of Mattie...)

GaaaaarlicBread · 27/03/2020 14:09

Thanks everyone , really glad it’s a well liked name!
@Astronica thanks for the recommendation, we chose rose / Rosalie as my grandmas name is Rosalie and my husbands was Rose so it’s a combination , and we thought Rosalie is a bit less ‘common’ as Rose is really popular but we are still undecided

Matilda is pretty popular but if you love it, use it. Rose is a bit of a filler middle name, so I'd go with Rosalie.

Tilda is a popular brand of rice.

Lllot5 · 27/03/2020 14:33

Love it one of my favourites.
I like it with an h
Mathilda.
Congratulations

Thefaceofboe · 27/03/2020 14:36

Lovely name

midsomermurderess · 27/03/2020 14:38

It's lovely, and Tilda is an elegant shortening. What about Maud as an alternative? It's a form of Matilda;)

Bezalelle · 27/03/2020 14:40

Matilda is fab but Rose is so common and boring, even if there's a family connection. It's the Jane/Louise of the past generation. Honour your relative in another way, and use a more imaginative middle name for Matilda.

DippingToes · 27/03/2020 15:08

I have a teenage Matilda. She always gets positive comments about her name, and has only ever met 2 others in her life, so can't be that common 😊

IVflytrap · 27/03/2020 15:56

Matilda Rosalie is very nice. Matilda isn't uncommon, but as a pp said, it was more popular a few years ago. I don't know of any baby Matildas.

honeybee1986 · 27/03/2020 16:03

I have a Matilda Rose aged 4 🌹 and don't know any other Matilda Rose's.
Lovely name 😉

Lots of people do shorten to Tilly though xx

upaladderagain · 27/03/2020 16:09

Matilda is fab.

So many good nns- Mattie, Tilly, Tilda

I suggested it (strongly) to DS & DDil when they were expecting. They didn't use it though. Good job really, as they had a boy.

Congratulations btw

yestonodressyet · 27/03/2020 17:14

It's on our list too to use with middle name Primrose do got my vote! Grin

PinkWellingtons · 27/03/2020 17:17

I have a Matilda Rose. She's 7 and pretty amazing!
