Theodore - Great name. Would have been my choice for name had DD been a boy.
Wilfred - Not a fan. Feels like too much of an old man name still. Also dislike the NN Wilf.
Casper - Nice. People on here will always go on about the ghost, but I think the association is fading now.
Henry - Perfectly fine name. Not one I would personally choose, but it's a classic.
Otis - Not a fan. Nothing wrong with the name, I just don't like it.
Gilbert - Nope. Definitely an old man name. I generally don't like any of the -Bert names anyway.
Gabriel - Lovely name. Quite like the NN Gabe.
Rufus - Excellent name. Was one of my alternative picks for a boy's name.
Louis - Another pick! Would have picked if my mother wasn't called Louise.
Atticus - Definitely not. Far too pompous for my liking.
Felix - I like it. However there are the inevitable associations with the cat food though.
Hugo - Good name. Another classic I wouldn't personally choose though.
Arthur - Still seems very old man-esque to me, but it's very popular as a baby name in recent years, so what do I know?
Laurie - I think it's better as a NN truthfully. I would use Laurence on the birth certificate so he has options when older, but use Laurie at every opportunity.

PeskyRooks · 13/03/2020 18:15

Same old names that I've read a thousand times on this topic.

BikeRunSki · 13/03/2020 18:33

Theodore - fine
Wilfred - fine, know a couple who are 4ish.
Casper - friendly ghost
Henry - ok, dull, very well used
Otis - aardvark
Gilbert - love it, needs more exposure
Gabriel - love it, love it, love it. Was on my list for DS.
Rufus - like it a lot
Louis - love it, but be prepared for pronunciation and spelling confusion
Atticus - pretentious. I know he’s a lovely man in TKAM, but still strikes me as pretentious
Felix - adore it! Know a 5 year old Felix, no cat references
Hugo - hate it
Arthur - boring now
Laurie (not sure about Laurence) - I agree, Laurie is cute, Lau(w)rence not so much.

@PeskyRooks why bother commenting if you've nothing constructive to say!

I was just urging you to have some originality, so many interesting, rich and diverse names in the world and your list is just my primary school's reception class list.
I love names find them so interesting and get disappointed when it's the same ones.

PlantPotting · 13/03/2020 19:11

@PeskyRooks @everly

Thing is though your comments aren’t even true. Laurie is outside the top 450 names and there was less than 50 baby boys given this name in 2018.
Atticus outside the top 450 names and Gilbert outside the top 1,000 names!
Otis well outside the top 100 too. Casper too and others.

My favourites from your list @everly is Otis, Theodore, Wilfred, Casper, Gabriel, Louis, Felix, Henry, Hugo and Arthur
Some of my very favourite names- really love them all

Not keen at all on Gabriel, Rufus or Atticus x

PeskyRooks · 13/03/2020 19:14

At least Roman/Rowan was not on your list.

Dyra · 13/03/2020 19:18

They're the names OP likes and has chosen for her list @PeskyRooks. No need to be mean about it.

Why not share your more "interesting, rich and diverse" names for consideration? Maybe OP might like one.

PeskyRooks · 13/03/2020 19:25

Well excuse me I was under the impression people posted their baby names to garner people's opinions/suggestions.
You have done neither dyra

Dyra · 13/03/2020 19:36

I gave my opinions on the list given as requested in the initial post. I'm the second post. The one immediately before yours. Maybe you missed it. Smile

I was merely pointing out that since you feel OP's list is lacking originality, maybe you might help constructively by posting some alternatives. You never know, OP might like one and that primary school class of the future might be a little more diverse with names.

MoonlightMistletoe · 13/03/2020 20:06

I like Gabriel the most Smile

everly · 13/03/2020 20:19

@PeskyRooks these are the names I like, I'm not that bothered by popularity however I do not agree that my list "lacks originality". As @PlantPotting has explained some are quite underused.

I accept they aren't to your taste, that's fine but just dont bother posting if that's the case. I'm interested to hear some of your suggestions though.

17caterpillars1mouse · 14/03/2020 20:27

Theodore - I like the full name just really dislike Theo and Teddy. I don't mind Ted

Wilfred - like this, really like the nn Wilf

Casper - I just always think of the friendly ghost. Not a fan

Henry - love it but it's very popular where I live

Otis - I like it, it's quirky

Gilbert - awful

Gabriel - I like it in theory, and used to now a gorgeous 2 year old Gabriel (he'd be 12 now) but just could never imagine having a child named this

Rufus - love it. It was our boy name for our second child but we had a girl

Louis - hate it. I don't understand why people love it

Atticus - cool

Felix - it's OK

Hugo - I like it

Arthur - lovely but everywhere here

Laurie (not sure about Laurence) - love Laurie, though prefer Lawrie. I would have Lawrence on the birth certificate though

IceColdCat · 14/03/2020 20:30

My favourite on your list is Gilbert - love!
Also like Casper, Felix and Laurie.
Not keen on Wilfred, Louis, Otis or Atticus.

Quizeerascal · 14/03/2020 20:52

Theodore- Like it but don't love, it seems to be fairly popular
Wilfred- I like it, a good alternative to the ever-popular William, Wilf is a great nn
Casper- I always hear 'the friendly ghost's although his generation may not
Henry- classic, popular but for good reason
Otis- I hear aardvark but again that may be generational
Gilbert- not keen, too harsh and dated imo
Gabriel- love it
Rufus- love it
Louis- like it but don't love it
Atticus- I like it but it's a bit out there, difficult name to carry off
Felix- nice enough
Hugo- nice enough but a bit bland
Arthur- great classic name
Laurie- reminds me of Little Women in a good way but prefer it as a nn for Laurence

Astronica · 15/03/2020 01:31

I really like your list.
Favourites:
Theodore
Casper
Henry
Wilfred (love Wilf)
Rufus (my favourite of list)
Louis
Atticus (cool and distinctive - love nns Kit and Gus)
Felix
Hugo

Arthur, Gilbert and Otis are okay
Not keen on Gabriel and Laurie.

loubert89 · 15/03/2020 16:08

Casper is a lovely name, though I prefer the spelling Caspar. It's my favourite out of your list.
Unless it gets some form of reboot into pop culture, the new generation won't think of friendly ghost.

Whatsyourflava · 15/03/2020 16:21

Theodore - LOVE
Wilfred - LOVE
Casper - LOVE
Henry - LOVE (favouite)
Otis - LOVE (favourite)
Gilbert - no way
Gabriel - LOVE (favourite)
Rufus - ok. But dog like and rhymes with dufus
Louis - LOVE (favourite)
Atticus - no. A racist character
Felix - LOVE (favourite)
Hugo - LOVE (favourite)
Arthur - LOVE (favourite)
Laurie (not sure about Laurence) - like

Gosh you have such a great list and I have so many favourites! Believe it or not I’m very picky about names but your choices are lovely!

everly · 15/03/2020 16:34

Thanks everyone. I'm going to ditch Atticus, I do agree it's quite a difficult name for a child to pull off.
