I'm 6 months pregnant and me and my partner found out that we're having a babygirl. We've chosen the name for her however after talking to a few other people we're not to sure if it's the best idea. We want to name her skyla-blair how ever the people we've spoken to has said if we do that then we can't just call her skyla like we want to we have to use her full name all the time (e.g skyla-blair not just skyla). I'm wondering if that's true or if we can say her name how we want to or if it doesn't matter either way.

Of course you can just call her Skyla if that's what you want to do, it doesn't matter. Don't listen to what other people say, it's your child so it's your choice.

Just be aware that MN generally doesn't like hyphenated names, so you might get negative comments.

If I'm honest (and you don't have to listen to me!) I think that Skyla Blair is much nicer than Skyla-Blair, especially as you want to call her Skyla anyway. But it's your child, so it's up to you.

A bit of a mouthful, especially as the first name sounds made up. Though a search brings up that it's a hormone-releasing IUD that prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years. Not quite sure what to do with that. She'll probably get a lot of people assuming it's Skylar.

Skyla (no hyphen) Blair SO much nicer and if you are going to just call her Skyla anyway then make everyone’s life easier and don’t include the hyphen. Sorry. Hyphenated names so unnecessary and ruin what is otherwise a lovely name

OP, I agree with others that Skylar Blair sounds better (you’ll probably have people spelling it with the ‘r’ at the end anyway and that way you won’t continually be correcting people), and I also see the point that you may as well drop the hyphen if you’re just going to call her Skyla(r), but it’s your child and your decision, so call her whatever you like and ignore the Katie Hopkins-esque name snobbery.

If you mean ‘Skylar’ or ‘Skyler’ (Anglicised forms of Dutch surname Schuyler often used for boys and girls in US) I’d spell it properly.

Though two surname names sounds rather like a law firm.

I like the name Blair for a girl but have never heard skyla. It doesn’t sound right - but may just be me.

I agree together they sound like a company name rather tHan a person.

'Skyla' doesn't sound right because it isn't a name, it's a mishearing of a US name by someone with a non-rhotic accent who has left off the final 'r' because they don't pronounce it.

The original Dutch surname was 'Schuyler' (pronounced, roughly, 'Skyler' I believe there are characters in Hamilton and a song with that name? and it's tended to be used as a first name in the US as either Skylar or Skyler.

Some UK namers who don't pronounce their 'r's go with 'Skyla', but to be honest, it's a bit illiterate in a 'Chester Draws'/'rest bite'/'defiantly' way.

No one's being 'rude' to you, though -- they don't know you or your name, so by definition it can't be personal. They're expressing a (fairly widespread) dislike of a type of name you happen to have.

I loathe the name George and am baffled by its popularity -- but I recognise that other people don't agree, and think it's lovely and classic. I'm not insulting all Georges and parents of Georges.

I’m really not a fan of hyphenated names and if you’re not even going to use the second part regularly it just seems pointless and trying too hard to be unique (especially when it’s not a common combination like Sarah-Jane or nowadays things like Ellie-May)

I agree Skyla seems unfinished, it’s not my taste but all the girls I’ve known with this name are Skylar which seems more complete

People can be a bit brutal on these threads, OP. Personally I quite like Skylar, but prefer without the hyphen. I'm never sure if hyphenated names mean you should address that person by their full name all the time. If she's likely to go by Skylar on a day to day basis it might make more sense to ditch the hyphen.

Skyler/Skylar is ok by itself. Blair is an odd one because it's a surname and also sounds a bit like a noise.

If you have to have both then no hyphen definitely better.
But this name is so so so chavtastic that I think it's reasonable other posters mentioned it (not just snobbery). A name as chavvy as that could be really detrimental to them later.

Stick with just Skylar. That's ok. Imo

Don't use the hyphen if you don't intend using the Blair. Otherwise she will have to explain herself to hundreds of teachers.
