Advice on name Lily

We don't know what baby will be, I have a girls name I was set with but ever since I was little I always thought I'd use the name Lily, I really like/d it.

One issue.. My parents decided to name their 4 year old dog Lily, discussing names recently I said this and my mum and nana saw no problem in using it. Am I going mad? I can't use it can I? Poor child and dog won't know who's being called.

I do spend quite a lot of time with my family and I have a toddler who may well get confused aswell. Am I right ?

DH is a bit on the fence with it.

I don't think you can use it, sorry. It's a shame, I like Lily, such a simple pretty name.

InArrears · 10/03/2020 00:58

I like Lily, but I wouldn't use it. My sil stole my baby name for her puppy. I was really unhappy about it at the time, but 14 years on I have almost forgiven her and I love the name we ended up picking.

@DramaAlpaca Thank you, I agree as much as I love it, think it's a no.

Not entirely going mad after all.

@InArrears It's annoying but I have a name I'd settled on anyway, my mum thinks it's fine though. Everyone will think I've stolen the dogs bloody name.

Lily is very common these days, every other girl that I know is called Lily!

DropYourSword · 10/03/2020 02:51

Honestly, it’s a lovely name and if you like it I genuinely don’t see a problem. Lily the dog is not going to be around forever!

Astronica · 10/03/2020 03:07

I could go either way here. I actually think it's only a problem if you think it's a problem. And it sounds as if you do. Otherwise I think it's fine.

Jossina · 10/03/2020 03:20

I don't see a problem. There have been other families with pets who have children's names. Hey, at least they didn't name the dog Lily AFTER you'd already had little Lily :)

Whatsyourflava · 10/03/2020 07:38

I genuinely don’t see any problem here either. Lily is a gorgeous name and is much more unusual than it used to be. Have you got another name you love as much? My son would love it if he has the same name as my parents dog by the way. He always tries to give his toys his own name too

NoSauce · 10/03/2020 07:40

I think it’s fine. If there’s no other name you love then you should use it.

pilates · 10/03/2020 07:41

I love the name but I can see why it has put you off. How annoying.

MikeUniformMike · 10/03/2020 09:05

Use it. Depending on the breed, the dog might not be around for long.

Lily is lovely but I don't like Lil.

I'd pick a good middle name so that DD could be Lily Middlename at her grandparents'. Not Rose, Pearl, May or Grace though.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 10/03/2020 10:04

my niece has the same name as my mum's cat. My sister didn't even realise until I asked her if she'd named her after the cat. It's fine.

december20100 · 10/03/2020 10:23

lovely name, just don't double barrel it.

MissPepper8 · 10/03/2020 11:45

Thanks for the comments :)

I have my boys name set and really excited to use it, I think I may need to see their little face if it's a girl though.

Not Rose, Pearl, May or Grace though

My middle name is Mae after a great auntie and great grandmother, so she'd be Lily Mae (not double barrelling, husband wouldn't let me), maybe stick to my original unless we think of something else lol.
