Pronounced mye-ah. What do people think? I like Maya Violet.

Or the other name I really like is Brodie. Maya or Bridie?

Bridie not Brodie!

Maya Violet is gorgeous and much prefer it to Brodie /Birdie

MamaKarmaLlama · 07/03/2020 23:36

Maya is lovely!

daisypond · 07/03/2020 23:37

I would go for Maya. I don’t mind Bridie but people will think you’re referring to brides.

n00bMaster69 · 07/03/2020 23:38

Maya is beautiful.

Not keen on Violet (reminds me of Keeping up appearances) or Bridie (that combination of letters looks ugly to me).

Sportsnight · 07/03/2020 23:38

Maya is great (and a nod to Maya Angelou who was amazing). I like Bridie too, you don’t hear it so much these days, but it’s pretty.

DramaAlpaca · 07/03/2020 23:40

Maya as in the Central American civilisation? That's the first thing I think about, even though it looks pretty.

Bridie is a very dated Irish name, a diminutive of Bridget. I don't think I've come across a Bridie under 70. It might be time to bring it back.

GrumpyHoonMain · 07/03/2020 23:41

Maya as in the Sanskrit for illusion?

BackforGood · 07/03/2020 23:46

I would read 'Maya' as 'May-yah'.

Still - even with that confusion, I MUCH prefer it to Bridie. (or Brodie).

Mamato2gorgeousboys · 07/03/2020 23:52

Lovely name. I would read it as you said Op.

Jossina · 08/03/2020 00:12

Bridie sounds like a nickname for Bridget. Maya is nice, I've also seen it spelled Maia. Anyone else remember Maya the Bee?

Omashu · 08/03/2020 00:18

Maya is lovely. My OH liked it for our dd but I don’t like how popular it is (I won’t go for anything in top 100).

dangerrabbit · 08/03/2020 00:22

Beautiful name.

Kokeshi123 · 08/03/2020 01:09

Maya is nice but not with Violet--too many "eye" sounds.

I think it is nice with a longer middle name like Josephine or Elizabeth.

JemimaPuddleCat · 08/03/2020 01:11

I agree with a pp that Maya Violet is too heavy on the i sounds.

Not a fan of Bridie, what about Briony?

Astronica · 08/03/2020 02:01

Maya is nice enough, but certainly everywhere and I've come across several of each pronunciation - May- ah and Mye-ah. Mia is also very popular, and there are variations around such as Miah which can have 2 different pronunciations. I would want to avoid that group of names myself because of all the spellings and pronunciations, but that said Maya Violet is nice.

I think Bridie is beautiful, under-used, a distinctive and bright name. My easy favourite of your 2.

Pieceofpurplesky · 08/03/2020 02:24

@DramaAlpaca I have taught two Bridie's over the last five years and a family member had one.

Lycanthropology · 08/03/2020 09:47

Maya and Maia are both lovely.

A bridie is a pasty in Scotland, a bit like a Cornish pasty, so it sounds a bit silly to me!

CaffiSaliMali · 08/03/2020 10:13

I knew two different Bridies at school, one at my first primary school, and one at my secondary school. I mentioned one of them to my inlaws, who all think I'm making the name up! It's not very well known, so you may get some comments. It wouldn't bother me, but worth bearing in mind if this might bother you.

I prefer Maya overall.

needadvicethankyouplease · 08/03/2020 10:49

Love it!

ZenSilva · 08/03/2020 10:58

I LOVE the name Maya, I don’t know why but it makes me think of a Mother Earth like character, it works really well with Violet too

DramaAlpaca · 08/03/2020 14:10

Pieceofpurplesky it has already come back then!

Cucumbersalad · 08/03/2020 14:55

Maya is lovely. It's very, very popular at my DCs school. Several in every year group (primary). Some are spelled the Polish way Maja but pronounced the same.

Bridie is a very different sort of name to me. I have only ever heard older women with this name, so find it hard to picture a little Bridie!

shartsi · 08/03/2020 15:32

I love Maya
