Hi everyone

Just having thoughts about Ophelia. I really like it BUT have the reservation that it reminds me a little of 'oaf' as in, 'what an oaf she is'. Does anyone else have this association?
Also, what would nick names be? Fifi? Lia? Ophey?

Thanks! Flowers

Similarly, I like Cordelia but it reminds me of 'Cor, blimey!' the expression (I'm from down under haha).

Are there other names similar to Ophelia and Cordelia without those prefixes?

I am just brainstorming :)

They’re both pretty to the ear and I don’t think ‘oaf’ or ‘cor’ at all.

BUT Cordelia has much better associations, as wasn’t she the feisty daughter in King Lear?

Ophelia was a sad, pathetic character in Hamlet, who I think went mad? Surprises me people use it.

LightDrizzle · 06/03/2020 17:00

Can Ophelia tits?
Sorry op. Kids are twats.

frillyfarmer · 06/03/2020 17:05

@LightDrizzle this is why my DH vitoed it as a name - he went to school with an Ophelia-tits. 🤯

IslayBrigid · 06/03/2020 17:16

@URWelcome yes you're right, Cordelia was strong and feisty and loyal and Ophelia was definitely very sad. I guess they are both used because beautiful names but agree Cordelia has better associations. :)

Really don’t like the sound of Cordelia - just so frilly - really hate it. A name like Cora is lovely though

I know it doesn’t really follow (as same no of syllables)but I REALLY love Ophelia , Aurora and Aurelia ❤️

Whatsyourflava · 06/03/2020 17:33

“Cord” sort of makes me think of hanging and death. Sorry weird I know

Whatsyourflava · 06/03/2020 17:34

Although Delia is nice. Cordelia just sounds more like a random nix of letters and two names smashed together
I prefer shorter names usually

titchy · 06/03/2020 17:41

Lovely name. Asking for the piss to be taken though sorry. 'I wann' Ophelia body/tits/arse' etc

iklboo · 06/03/2020 17:44

Ophelia Balls. Sorry.

CatteStreet · 06/03/2020 17:49

The 'Ophelia tits' stuff is silly, but I can't get past the Hamlet associations and don't understand why anyone would want to name their child after such an unhappy character. Cordelia met a gruesome end too, but she was right-thinking and courageous.

CatteStreet · 06/03/2020 17:50

Cordelia also shortens nicely to Delia.

DoctorBambino · 06/03/2020 18:03

What about Amelia, Emilia or Aurelia

TheVanguardSix · 06/03/2020 18:11

My DD was going to be an Ophelia.
DH was really unhappy with the name, for obvious reasons which I thought were silly until one day, while waiting to see the midwife, a print of the famous Millais painting hanging in the waiting room was looking back at me and it was a real, "No way can I name our DD this." I knew Ophelia's sad story. But it was the painting that made me realise what a handle the name actually is. So... how about
Aurelia
Seraphina
Samantha
Isadora
Livinia

Thefaceofboe · 06/03/2020 19:53

My niece is Ophelia and she gets Fifi or Fi. The nickname wasn’t planned but that’s what she started calling herself Grin

Whatsyourflava · 06/03/2020 19:57

@TheVanguardSix but your Ophelia would have had her own story 💐🥰

This is very true and a very lovely thought which hadn't even occurred to me. And actually, the Millais painting is beautiful. But thank you! I think, looking back, I was finding a reason to nullify the name, which made it easier for me to accept that DH didn't like it. I do think that if he too had loved the name, we would have named our DD Ophelia.

GingerBeverage · 06/03/2020 20:16

Cordelia will always be from Buffy the Vampire Slayer for me

LexiM · 06/03/2020 20:28

I love Ophelia. Personally I think nicknames come naturally but I would go with Fifi.

The problem I’ve found with most names is someone has a link to something/someone negative to it! Definitely go with what you love.

georgialondon · 06/03/2020 20:42

It's a burlesque name.

Ophelia- bum

Ophelia- boobs.

It's s shame because I actually like the sound of the name but wouldn't saddle my child with it for this reason.

SilverOtter · 06/03/2020 20:48

I love Cordelia; it would've been my choice if DS2 has been a girl. But he wasn't, so he is a Corin insteadSmile
