Boring name?

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster!
Due my first baby in July and trying to decide on a name... my favourite right now and what I keep coming back to is Jack.
Is this a boring name now when all these new, elaborate names are popping up or is it still seen as a classic name?

I have a lovely nephew Jack. He's 11 and very quirky. It makes me think of him so not boring at all.

TheGriffle · 01/03/2020 22:40

It’s popular for a reason, I see it as a classic name but he will probably be one of several Jacks wherever he goes.

PlantPotting · 01/03/2020 23:11

Jack is just such a cool name, one I’ve always loved and one which still manages to sound fresh and cool. There aren’t many other names like this. Others seem to go in and out of fashion. Only other name that can come close is Alexander.

PlantPotting · 01/03/2020 23:12

Numbers of baby boys called Jack has actually declined year on year for past 20 years so it’s much rarer than it used to be

I love Jack, and wouldn't hesitate to use it. Some names don't seem to lose anything by their popularity, and I feel Jack is definitely one of these. Other names seem to be appealing at first and then wear out as you see them everywhere. More traditional names like Jack are fine when popular I think. So, not boring at all to me.

BlueHarry · 02/03/2020 00:02

I always imagined that if I had a son I'd call him Jack. I do like the name. I don't think it's seen as boring, there are a lot of Jack's in my dd's school though.

DramaAlpaca · 02/03/2020 00:29

It's a nice name. It was originally a diminutive of John, but has been a name in its own right for a long time now. It's strikes me as a sort of solid, dependable name.

Jossina · 02/03/2020 04:11

I prefer it as a nickname for John, but it's quite nice. Snappy and can fit a number of different personalities.

OhNoNoNoNotThatOne · 02/03/2020 04:19

I think Jack is like Daniel and Oliver. They're nice names that will hold up forever and never go out of fashion.

I like it, definitely not boring.

Treasured · 02/03/2020 07:05

Thanks for all your comments Smile I’ll definitely be sticking with Jack!

It's a diminutive of John, but it is from Jacques, the french form of James and Jacob.

Whatsyourflava · 02/03/2020 11:01

Just love the name Jack. Such a cool name and sounds fresh and cool
One of those special names

So glad you’re sticking with it

puds11 · 02/03/2020 11:04

Nothing wrong with Jack! At some point the classics will become the rarity!

KLS02 · 02/03/2020 11:08

lovely name!

CandyApple1995 · 02/03/2020 11:10

Jack is a great name, I love it!

Nowayorhighway · 02/03/2020 12:30

I don’t think it’s being used as much now as it once was, it was popular when I was at school in the 90s.

Mayhemmumma · 02/03/2020 12:42

I love it!! Classic not boring. I used it as a middle name for my child who has a very unusual (foreign) name to balance it out!

Babybatman · 02/03/2020 14:34

Lovely name. The only thing that would put me off is how long it has been so popular which means there are usually multiple Jacks in every school, workplace etc and will be his whole life, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Hereforthenamethreads · 02/03/2020 14:39

It's lovely!

CoalCraft · 02/03/2020 16:03

I think it's a lovely name, and funnily enough not actually that common; I can only think of three Jak/Jacks I've met :)

FluffyEggsontoast · 02/03/2020 16:05

Brilliant name
Haven’t met a new “jack” in a good few years x

Emthebaker · 02/03/2020 18:25

I’m glad you’re sticking with it!

I always thought it was such a boring name until I was pregnant and all of a sudden I loved the sound of it. There’s no Jacks in any baby group I go to, but I’ve met a Hendrix, Ernest & Oakley. Everyone is so into unique names now that the traditional ones are often most striking :)

pilates · 02/03/2020 22:04

Jack is a great name, a name that suits all ages

CharitySchmarity · 04/03/2020 19:14

I don't love Jack, but I don't think it's boring. It's just a bit too "craggy action hero" for my taste (maybe because so many men in action films and detective stories are called Jack?) But I don't think today's children would have that association so it would just be seen as a mainstream, but kind of cool name.
