Lily

I’m trying to talk myself out of this because it’s popular and not very original. But I really do like it. I can’t decide what I would regret more - not using it or having her be one of many in classes/groups etc.

DD1 is Ruby. I have explored a lot of options on her with MN and find it useful for honesty! So really just looking for opinions and also how many babies do you know named Lily?

My 5 year old dn is Lily. She's a real character and has us in stitches. She's the only one I know. I loved the name before she came along and even more now. It's pretty.

Curlysusie · 25/02/2020 22:26

Love Lily. I know of a couple but don't actually know any. I also know of a Lilia x

I have a Lily. I was like you and hated the fact that it is so popular but also loved the name too much not to use it! We have a Lily who lives on our road and there was a Lily at a play group we went to last week but both of those Lily's are about 5/6 years older than her so hopefully it's getting less common again. Other than that I haven't heard of any other Lilys.

Yellowcakestand · 25/02/2020 22:32

I know a Lillia, lovely name x

Astronica · 25/02/2020 22:37

I only know one Lily, 10 years old. It's a really lovely name and lovely as Ruby's sister.

SemperIdem · 25/02/2020 23:12

It is really popular. I also think it’s particularly lovely. I can never use it because my partners niece has that name. It is one of the few very popular names I really like and would use.

Poppydaisies · 26/02/2020 15:48

Lily fas been so fashionable for a number of years that it will inevitably fall out fashion soon and start to southern dated!

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 26/02/2020 15:56

I am a Lily, and my DSis is Ruby. We're both mid-20s, so when we were born the names were rare - my mum got really pissed off when we were teens and they started getting popular!

Whatsyourflava · 26/02/2020 16:35

@SpaceDinosaur hey
I noticed you said “Lily is getting more and more popular now”(something along those lines), but that statement is not true.
I’m a bit surprised people don’t just check the statistics if they’re going to make comments like that.
Lily’s numbers have been rapidly declining since 2011 (according to the official government statistics)
Infact the number of Lily’s in 2018 (most recent year we have stats for) was less than half the number of Lily’s that we’re born in 2011! And there will be even less Lily’s in 2020 as it’ll follow its trajectory

Poppydaisies · 26/02/2020 17:05

There might be less newborns now, but all the thousands of Lilys born over the past few years are starting school and entering the 'outside world'!

SpaceDinosaur · 26/02/2020 17:05

@Whatsyourflava can you track name popularity by region?

I teach baby and toddler classes. I have seen a definite increase in the number of Lily’s in classes in my area (north London) I have 6 Lilly’s out of 76 girls this term.
Also Ava’s... lots of Ava’s :-)

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/02/2020 17:08

I like Lily but as pp said I would use Lillian , it’s more classic and gives the option of Lily.

MikeUniformMike · 26/02/2020 18:04

Lillian is awful

daisypond · 26/02/2020 18:07

I like Lily a lot, but it’s a ‘90s name to me. I know a few in their 20s. Still like it, though.
