Ruan?

Any thoughts on this name?
Not pregnant but currently thinking about ttc number 3.

Ruan is cornish I believe, I think there's also a gaelic version. (happy to be corrected!)

Pronounced Roo-an.

How would you pronounce it on first glance? Would you think its a typo?

I quite like it.

Thanks everyone - actually a much better reception on here than I anticipated!

It’s the city in France

No it's not. The city is Rouen. Pronunciation is somewhat similar but not enough to really be an issue.

IceWings · 27/02/2020 20:56

I like it. Also like Reth which is a very similar name.

I'm Irish and I would pronounce it ruin like a ruined castle. Also the only one Ruan I know is female.

It's ok, a bit dull, but I mainly wouldn't use it because Rowan and Roman are now SO popular he's just going to be a 'version' of that and have 90% of people assuming he's a Rowan. 'Oh sorry, no, it's actually slightly different, spelled Ruan'. Don't!

Loads of lovely male Cornish names. I like Jago and Piran.

xQueenMabx · 28/02/2020 09:49

Never heard it before, but I think its lovely

Tartyflette · 28/02/2020 09:52

Go for it, It's a good name and i think it's fairly clear how it should be pronounced.
(And not really like the French city of Rouen, which is Roo-on, with the N barely audible.)

EspressoPatronum · 28/02/2020 09:53

Love it! Ru is a cute nickname too.

Mischance · 28/02/2020 09:58

Struan? - Scottish name which sounds a bit less like ruin.

HeronLanyon · 28/02/2020 10:03

I know it from Ryan major in Cornwall.
Most will hear/spell it as Ruin or Rowan even ?

I think it’s a great name but probably wouldn’t use it for those reasons.
Congrats op.

HeronLanyon · 28/02/2020 10:03

Love Struan. Have known 2 and always thought what a great underused name.

PlantPotting · 28/02/2020 10:05

My baby girl is called Rowan and always gets called RoMan 😩Especially at our local nursery as there’s 2 baby Roman’s there but it’s also happened at hospital too. So I think it depends on how Ruan is pronounced and if the potential for mix up with lots of top 100 names would bother you.

Chocolatedaim · 28/02/2020 10:08

I like it!
