Asking for a friend

How do you pronounce Montgomery?

She would say Mon(t)-gumery but I would say Mon(t)-gommery.

She loves the name but really doesn't like the gommery version and wouldn't want to keep correcting people if they said it the way she doesn't like. Also the baby would not ever be Monty.

Thank you in advance!!

I say Munt-gummery, so no "o" sound at all. In SE Scotland, if that helps.

puds11 · 21/02/2020 20:10

I would say gommery.

Obsidian77 · 21/02/2020 20:12

Mont gommery

diddlediddle · 21/02/2020 20:14

Surely it's gommery unless you're accent dictates otherwise (eg Scottish).

Also crazy to use Montgomery if you don't like monty!

CatrionaNess · 21/02/2020 20:14

It does!!! I'm English living in Scotland but my friend is Scottish. Maybe the gummery pronunciation is a Scots thing?

@diddlediddle she has 2 other children who also have 3 or 4 syllable names and they go by their full names as well - she just prefers longer names :)

I'd say gommery.

You may be right; I've never heard it said any way other than -gummery. If your friend is Scottish in Scotland then she's probably thinking you are the one that's saying it wrong! Grin

TheSheepofWallSt · 21/02/2020 20:33

I have a lurcher Mont-gommery, who is almost always Monty.

Mamabear88 · 21/02/2020 20:43

Mont-gommery for me too (Manchester), never come across the gummery pronunciation and bound to get shortened to Monty.

RaininSummer · 21/02/2020 20:52

Gommery. Never heard the gummery way.

bridgetreilly · 21/02/2020 21:43

I've heard both. But the baby will grow up and the chances of him becoming known as Monty are extremely high.

Mamato2gorgeousboys · 21/02/2020 21:45

I would say gommery. Wouldn’t it mainly be shortened to Monty anyway?

DramaAlpaca · 21/02/2020 21:49

I think both are correct. It might be regional, but I've a feeling the 'gummery' pronunciation is the posh way of saying it.

IVflytrap · 21/02/2020 22:06

Gommery. But she shouldn't use it because it's an awful name if she doesn't like Monty, because that's absolutely what he'll end up being called.

avocadont · 21/02/2020 22:10

I personally pronounce it Mont-gommery

Lurcher you say....??

CatrionaNess · 21/02/2020 22:39

From friend:
"Thank you all for your really helpful comments on the pronunciation of Montgomery. I think that, given the success of my two older children in being called by their full 3 or 4 syllable names with out them being shortened (which for one is really easy and common), I think we're going to head with Montgomery and just introduce him as Montgummery and encourage people to pronounce it as such. Especially as gummery seems to be a Scottish thing and is more common up here. Obviously, as he grows up it'll be up to him whether he enforces the gummery pronunciation or not. (I don't like the gommery pronunciation because my dad used to call spitting gomming so they sound quite similar and the connotation is not a good one!!!) DH loves the name and isn't bothered by any particular pronunciation :)"

The district Judge Montgomery Trent pronounces it that way and he is known as Monty I believe
