If you read of 4Dd Henrietta, Genevieve, Cordelia and Camilla how would you imagine the parents to be?

Well names that end with Mai/May/Rose also have a stereotype but on the other side of the spectrum. You might like those names but remember this is the first decision that you’re making for your daughter.

There’s lots of cute names out there that are timeless and suitable adult names: Joy, Grace (Gracie), Annabelle, Rose (Rosie), Jessica (Jessie/Jess/Jesse).

what possesses someone to say such a thing on a baby name forum

But saying the family is "downmarket" is fine...?

SapphosRock · 20/02/2020 12:23

I’m also not a fan of hyphenated names I’m afraid. I know this is a terrible thing to say but I get quite snobby about them and assume family is downmarket (sorry I know it’s me that’s the problem here but if you want to know what people think behind your back but don’t dare to say)

My DD has a hyphenated name so I guess it will help her weed out snobby people who see our family as downmarket Grin

PrettyyGood · 20/02/2020 12:32

Why is a double barrelled name 'a fad?'

My daughter has one and she's 22 this year, so it's a long standing fad that's for sure.

She also has the dubious honour of having two unusual names that I cobbled together! Amazingly she's never had any of the issues described here and she absolutely loves her name

drumandthebass · 20/02/2020 12:32

I Hate double barrelled first names with a passion

SuperMeerkat · 20/02/2020 12:40

Don’t do it! You’re not naming a baby, you’re naming a person who needs to look competent at interviews one day and have a professional job. She won’t thank you for a cutsie name.

Itwasntme1 · 20/02/2020 12:41

It was me who described it as a fad. What I meant was it has become much more common over recent years. Yes there have always been the occasional Sarah-janes, John-Paul’s and Anne-Marie’s, but this Bobby-jo, daisy-may And jamie-Lynn trend has developed over the last decade or so. There are lists of statistics and articles to support this has become much more common in the Uk over the last decade or so. It’s the new kylie and jason😊

I think it has a lot to do with American television

Whatsyourflava · 20/02/2020 13:28

@SoupDragon I’d like to think of a kinder word but haven’t managed to think of one other than “downmarket”. It IS what I’d think but I know I shouldn’t. Many of us come on here for honest opinions, the kind of thing that people think but would never dare say. Just so they know and can decide if they care or not.
Many people must secretly think I’m downmarket because of my clothes and accent 🤣 I don’t care though, I don’t have much money so I do tend to look like sh*t 🤣

allthedamnvampires · 20/02/2020 13:29

I wish MN would stop deleting threads because the OP isn't happy about some mildly-put opinions. There's been no abuse. There's been a good discussion on hyphenated forenames for girls which I imagine has or will be useful for others.

Saharafordessert · 20/02/2020 13:43

People aren’t being grumpy, they are just stating their opinion.
Not the end of the world if that opinion differs from the OPs and certainly no need to delete a thread.
For what it’s worth I don’t like double barrelled names either and would also class them as ‘chavvy’ but that’s jus my opinion!

Lobsterquadrille2 · 20/02/2020 15:21

I know that it's absolutely not MN but I have a hyphenated name, I am 50, really like it and have never had any issues with it. It's more the French type than Daisy-Mae, but I also know a Marie-Helene and I really like that too. She is not known as "Marie" by anyone.

mathanxiety · 20/02/2020 23:35

Claiming this is all 'just' expression of opinions is disingenuous.

There is rudeness and lack of tact by the bucket full here.

Some commentators have chosen to project their own class-based hangups on the thread and in their hurry to identify themselves as members of a tier above the OP's they have said some hurtful things.

There is nothing objectively wrong with the OP's name preferences (and while her pronunciation of one name may not be canonically correct, this pronunciation is a very widespread one. It's not a strange idiosyncracy).

Whatsyourflava · 20/02/2020 23:49

@mathanxiety

I take your point. Sorry if I’ve been rude. I’m definitely not a tier above OP or do I want to pretend to be! I’d be willing to bet that OP is far wealthier than me (wouldn’t take much tbf 😂)

I can’t help it but hyphenated names make me feel all kinds of snobby thoughts. I wish I could but I just can’t help it and I have absolutely no right to think those thoughts but I do 🙈

So sorry if I’ve offended anyone

zurigirl · 20/02/2020 23:54

Could you use Rae still but without the hyphen?

Some suggestions...

Everly / Everleigh Rae
Astrid Rae
Ivy Rae
Juniper Rae
Aspen Rae

I feel like these are all pretty but also strong names. I thought of Astrid since you like Halle, which made me think of Halley's comet. Willow made me think of Aspen (another tree) and I would have said Rowan except I think there would be too many 'R' sounds together with Rae!

zurigirl · 21/02/2020 00:01

Oh, I'm not sure whether I misread your OP Blush

If Rae is just an idea and not 100% yet then I'm going to go ahead and also suggest Rowan or even another cute R name like River, e.g.:

Rowan Grace
Rowan Evie
River Marie

zurigirl · 21/02/2020 00:04

Just to add another one to the mix, how about Poppy? I think it'd be super cute on a baby or toddler, but it's also not that unusual so unlikely to raise any eyebrows in a job interview or anything like that.

BobbyBlueCat · 21/02/2020 00:16

It's all rather chavtastic.

Confusednewmum1 · 21/02/2020 08:54

Names that are double barrelled run the risk of being the
Carolanne
Carol Anne
Carlann
Carolann

Of the future - no offence to any of the carolannes or the like above.

Halle is nice as is Harper and Willow, Rae doesn’t go with them.

daisypond · 21/02/2020 09:09

If you already have one name ending in Mai(May), I don’t think you can have another one ending in Rae. It’s too twee and matchy. I’d look for another short, classic name. Joy?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 21/02/2020 09:17

Never understand the love for Harper on here.

But whatever floats your boat.

Kanga83 · 21/02/2020 09:18

God don't do it. What might seem cute on a baby is anything but on a teenager/professional woman/pensioner. One strong name, add the rest as middles names if you must.

codenameduchess · 21/02/2020 09:28

Agree with @Kanga83 kids have to grow up with the names they are given and all these cringey cutesy---- names aren't going to age well.

SilverySurfer · 21/02/2020 16:00

I agree, can't think of a nice hyphenated name.
