Girls name - Gladys?

I'm pregnant with my second daughter. Our first is Elsie (middle name Alice). My husband and I have always liked the name Gladys and are thinking of naming our second daughter this.

To me, its cute whilst baby is little and she grows up I like to think of it as a strong, and elegant name. I also like that it's unique and there are not lots of Gladys's out there. But on the other hand, i'm getting myself a bit worried that its a name that a lot of people do not like. I try to stay away from forums, yet here I am positing on one, worrying about the negative comments people have posted about this name in previous threads! For anyone else who likes Gladys, what middle name do you think could match well with it? Elsie was such an easy choice, it was always our favourite name. We are really struggling to be confident with our choice this time!

Noooooooo.

Gloria?

Josie465 · 18/02/2020 06:36

I like it. I agree that Gladys could be a strong sounding name for a fiery teenager and is quite cute for a little one. Ultimately, it is up to you and your husband so don’t let other people’s opinions deter you (especially strangers on the internet!) If you’re unsure, you could always consider Gladys for the middle name perhaps.

Dreadful. Sorry.

bravotango · 18/02/2020 07:35

There are lots of names that would have the effect you're looking for that are maybe nicer..? Greta? Astrid?

LucyFox · 18/02/2020 08:08

I like it - very underused!
Gladys Margaret
Gladys Mary/Marie
Gladys Jane/Jean
Gladys Elizabeth
Gladys Daisy/Rose
Gladys Anne
Gladys Laura/Lauren
Gladys Louise
Gladys Bronwyn
Gladys Belinda
Gladys Joy
Gladys Juliet

I like it. Strong and cheerful - although that's just a chance similarity of sound. It was popular in the same era as Edith, Elsie, Annie, Mabel etc* and those names are being used again. So why not Gladys?

reefedsail · 18/02/2020 08:18

I like it but I don't think it is elegant. I do prefer Gloria and think Glow is a great nick name (I know a little Glo).

Gladys works best with a vowel sound after it I think.

Gladys Annabelle
Gladys Esme
Gladys Imogen

While it is not something I would choose it does go well with Elsie.

If you cant find a middle name to it you could use it as the middle name.

Some ideas for middle names
Gladys Rose
Gladys Eileen
Gladys Lorraine
Gladys Mary

Whatsyourflava · 18/02/2020 08:40

How about Sylvie

Whatsyourflava · 18/02/2020 08:40

If you pick Gladys I’d pick a really classic middle name like Emma or Elizabeth or Edith

TulipCat · 18/02/2020 08:42

In my mind, Gladys is about 95, has a blue rinse and a penchant for Fry's peppermint creams!

Mamato2gorgeousboys · 18/02/2020 08:45

Elsie is lovely... Gladys would sound odd on a baby if I’m honest. Like Tulipcat, I think of a very old lady with a blue rinse.

ClappyFlappy · 18/02/2020 08:48

Good god no.

There’s a reason why unlike a lot of old lady names this one hasn’t come back into fashion. Horrible name.

CopperMugs · 18/02/2020 08:49

Horrendous

ClappyFlappy · 18/02/2020 08:50

Imagine how she’s going to feel as a grumpy teenager being called Gladys in a sea of Olivias and Avas.

If you like it so much change your own name to it.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 18/02/2020 08:51

God no. Don't do that to your child.

ScarlettDarling · 18/02/2020 08:51

Oh I really don't like Gladys. What about Nancy or Edie for a similar vibe?

Mammyloveswine · 18/02/2020 08:52

Oh god op if you love it use but I'm not convinced...

How about Ivy? Elspeth? Betsy? Sylvie? Elizabeth nn Betty? Ava? Marie? May?

MsChatterbox · 18/02/2020 08:52

I don't like the name. But she is not my daughter. If you like the name then use it!

IggyAce · 18/02/2020 08:53

Gladys is lovely not my cup of tea but if you like it go for it. I work in a school and haven’t come across one so it would be unusual.

GinasGirl · 18/02/2020 08:55

Ah my granny was a Gladys, so it holds fond memories .. of an old lady with a blue rinse and losing her teeth. Not sure it's one for a comeback to be honest. Loved her very much but not keen on the name for nowadays.

Seasonalanxiety · 18/02/2020 08:59

We had 3 in the family. Lovely ladies but not what I'd call strong and elegant Smile

OvalCanvas · 18/02/2020 09:01

It reminds me of Phoebe's picture on Friends.

sandybanana · 18/02/2020 09:01

Not for me

When I saw this I immediately I thought of Gladys Knight and the pips and began to belt out " midnight train to Georgia " ....

Grin
Omashu · 18/02/2020 09:08

No no nooooope! It sounds awful to me.
