"meh" names?

Having a discussion about baby names and how some names are just "meh", as in they provoke no reaction from you, you neither like nor dislike whatsoever. "Nothing names" as my DP calls them.

An example for me is Sophie.

Out of curiosity, what's a meh/nothing name to you??

It was a meh name to me growing up but now I’m older I just love the sound of it.

I can’t say as it’s a bit outing but our fourth child has a “meh” name as it was the only one we all felt was fine whereas the other names were liked by some but hated by others. So a “meh” name it is. Which is fine!

I always found "Sarah" a bit meh, but only because I knew so many of them. I think it is a nice name, and probably less popular nowadays, but in my year at school we had about 6 Sarah's, and a couple of other variations of it.

Nothing wrong with meh names! As what can be meh to one person can sound lovely (or horrid) to someone else.
My DS name is probably meh to many.

One name I do think is both a totally "meh" name and yet also one I really love is Grace.

@BlueHarry Sarah is a meh name to me too, but possibly for the same reason, that I know loads

Claire. Victoria. Rebecca/Becky. Katherine.

Meh names for me are those that were popular in the 50s/60s. Alison, Claire, Gillian, Ruth, Pauline, Marion, Kim, Elaine, Patricia, Margaret, Lesley, Roberta, Patricia, Shirley, Sally, Sandra.

I’m a Sarah, and it is a meh name! No raised eyebrows, no “oh I love that”, no translations needed into other languages - and yeah I’m 40 and there’s loads of us this age (bloody thin lizzy! I was before the song!)

That said, everything bad about it is also good.

Martha, Billy, Sally, Lucy, Heather, Josephine, Mary, Millie, zzzzzzzzzzzzz yawn

Rachel, Anna, Helen. 'Meh' because they're just safe and solid - nice enough but there were about 5 of each in my year at school. I have also got quite a meh name though I think, so I'm not judging.

Modern versions - Ella, Grace, Ava. There are SO many of them now that the 10 or so people I know (via Facebook) whose kids have those names all just blur into one child in my head haha!

I dislike the name Rebecca but not sure it's meh.

Lily is 'meh' but a nicer sound.

Sophie / Sophia. And Emily! No idea why. Just so many of them it's just... So blah!

I don't mean any offence but I do just think "meh". Always smile politely and say lovely of course though

We're all different and my DC names aren't everyone's cup of tea. I just think a bit more imagination would be nice.

But better a safe name than a yooneek one!

Surely one person's "meh" name is another person's classic? (I may be a person with a "meh" name )

I have to say I disagree with pp - if someone named their baby Pauline these days I'm pretty sure the reaction would be anything but "meh".

I think its funny that all of the 'meh' names suggested are girls names.

Annto be honest, my first thoughts were girls names. Weird?

Emily, Sophie, Amy, Leanne, Rachel, Alice basically most of the names given to girls in the late 80s early 90s

Boys names I would say things like David, Ben, Paul, Josh, Robert, James, Simon.
Again they're boys names that were popular in the late 80s early 90s.

I can imagine names like Evelyn and Jonah are probably going to be 'meh' names in 30 years.

Whatever names seem over popular at the moment I go off of quickly. I don't dislike them but I feel so meh when I read/hear them.

James is a kind of meh name for me. Nothing wrong with it, I like other new testament names like Andrew, Peter and John, but James just seems like a really boring, unimaginative name to me. I think part of it is to do with the fact that it is such a commonly used middle name - the male equivalent of May or Rose.

But for me there's not any boys names that immediately jump out at me.

Which is odd as I find boys much harder to name.

I'm actually related to quite a few of the above names of varying ages. So there is variety amongst generations.

I've always always loved Olivia. But now it is very ubiquitous. Still love it though I wouldn't personally use it.

It's just interesting to me to see the varying opinions.

I think Sophie is a beautiful name, to me Ann, Jane, May and John are ‘meh’ names, overused and dull sounding.

Emma, Emily, Charlotte, Jack, Grace, James.

Currently;

James, Ava, Eva, Oliver, Olivia and Jack.

You only think of names as 'meh' because they've been very popular at some point. But they were probably so popular because they're nice names!
So you might not choose them for your child, just because they're so many of them around and you think it would be better to get something a bit more unusual. But I really don't see why that stops you appreciating all popular names.

I really like both Sophie and Sarah, for example.
