How do I find out how common a name is?

I want to find out how common (as in usual!) a particular name is. Where can I do that? I can only find websites that list the 100 most common baby names, but this name isn't on that list. Is there a website where you can type in a name and then it tells you how many babies were given that name a certain year?

I think ‘popular’ is the word you are looking for, rather than common .

Bounty used to have search facilities for names, I think?

Depending where you are in the UK there are statistics published that will show all names given in a particular year and how many children were named that.

Are you in the UK? You can download the 2018 data which shows the top 100 and the use of every name used 3 or more times. It's on the office for national statistics (ONS) website

I’m not sure it’s possible to see regional variances.

For example my DD has a very popular name. She’s now a teen and has only ever been at school with two others, both much older than her.

Whereas there’s 4 girls in her old prep called a way less popular name (outside top 100)!

Then as I said scroll to table 6 to see ALL names, not just top 100. The column with the number of babies with the name is on the right.

You can also look up how many of a particular name were born in your area (if the name is in the top 100).

The BBC website have an updated article every year when the ONS info comes out. You can type in the name and it tells you how many were born and what the rank is. The info is for 2018. There is no way to know the stats for 2019 until the ONS release the info later this year.
