We both like the name Ellie for a girl and Alfie for a boy but are really stuck on middle names?
Also not sure whether to use the full titles Eleanor or Alfred or just use the shortened names?

Entirely up to you but they are both a bit nicknamey.
If you are never going to call them Eleanor and Alfred, just call them Ellie and Alfie.

The names have probably peaked, if that bothers you.

firsttimeivfmum · 04/02/2020 20:45

Without the surname I'm taking a guess at what might sound nice Smile

Ellie Mai or Ellie Rose are pretty.
Alfie Jack is strong?

MikeUniformMike · 04/02/2020 21:00

Ellie May and Alfie Jay is my guess.

MikeUniformMike · 04/02/2020 21:15

Apologies OP, I am not suggesting that you use those middle names.

Alfie and Ellie are ok but as they are very popular names, I would go for something a bit more unusual as a middle name, especially if you have a fairly popular surname.

Names like May, Rose and Grace are overused as middle names.

Ellie Imogen Smith sounds stronger than Ellie May Smith
Alfie Raymond Smith sounds stronger than Alfie Jay Smith.

I just made up those full names, but something like your nan's/grandad's or mum/dad's firstname, or your maiden name, might be suitable as a mn.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/02/2020 21:15

No I'd just go with Ellie or Alfie
Alfie George
Alfie James
Alfie William
Alfie Thomas
Alfie John
Alfie Leo
Alfie Alexander
Alfie Gray
Alfie Jacob.

Ellie Florence
Ellie Sofia
Ellie Grace
Ellie May
Ellie Ray
Ellie Jo
Ellie Jane
Ellie Jade
Ellie Marie
Ellie Madison
Ellie Nicole
Ellie Louise
Ellie Jasmine
Ellie Frances

They go nicely with your surname.
A popular first name with an unusual surname is fine.
I've mentioned on a few threads that when I was at school there were several instances of duplicated full names in the same year.

I'd still go for a strong middle name.

You could use other names that shorten to Ellie and Alfie. Eloise and Alphonse or something Smile

I know an Eloise who was planned to be an Ellie with Eloise on the bc, but when she turned up she was more Eloise than Ellie, and they always call her by her full name.

SlippersAndThePaper · 04/02/2020 21:42

Both are massively popular.

Ellie May/Mai/Mae is dull and so overused.

Whatsyourflava · 04/02/2020 21:52

Ellie and Alfie are gorgeous names

Ellie Imogen
Ellie Margaret
Ellie Aurora /Aurelia/Aria ?
Ellie Edith (if you like alliteration)
Ellie Clementine
Ellie Violet
Ellie Cleo

Whatsyourflava · 04/02/2020 21:54

Alfie Matthew
Alfie Ellis
Alfie Eli
Alfie Louis
Alfie Jackson (AJ)
Alfie Caleb
Alfie Chester
Alfie Miles
Alfie Christopher

I'd choose Eleanor as a full name as it's far classier than Ellie.

hannahfaith · 04/02/2020 22:20

Personally I'm not crazy about any of the longer forms on Alflie so I'd just name him that on the certificate but for Ellie there are so many precious choices (and spelling variations of Eleanor). Some I like are
Eloise
Elise
Eleanore
Elinor
Eleanor

I agree with a PP that May, Grace, Jane etc are too popular as middle names. Do you have any family names of people you wouldn't mind naming your child after. (Possibly even taking a male family member and either using his name as his or using the feminine form of his name)

If you like Eleanor Jane possibly using the names James could give the same sound but make it a tad bit more unusual and different

norealshepherds · 04/02/2020 22:22

My Alfie is Alfie Wilfred

AlliKaneErikson · 05/02/2020 20:00

Your surname is my maiden name, OP!! My middle name is Louise, which matched the surname, I think, and my brother’s middle name is James.

Eleanor has so many more options than Ellie. I would definitely use that and also probably Alfred too. Give your children choices, don't close them down.

Eleanor Miriam
Eleanor Phoebe
Eleanor Lois
Eleanor Ruth

Alfred Benjamin
Alfred Peter
Alfred Stephen
Alfred Mark

finallychangedmyusername · 06/02/2020 18:47

I'd definitely go with Eleanor/Alfred on the birth certificate.

Eleanor Lucy
Eleanor Clara
Eleanor Fleur
Eleanor Molly
Eleanor Zara
Eleanor Zoe
Eleanor Rosa

Alfred Eli
Alfred Jonas
Alfred Leo
Alfred Noah
Alfred Max
Alfred Ross
Alfred Toby

My favourites are Eleanor Zoe and Alfred Leo.
