DH really likes Anne but I’m not entirely convinced.
I don’t like Annie or Anna for sure but Anne is one I’m on the fence about.
Any thoughts?

It's unusual enough to be quite a bold choice. I like it. And Annie as a NN is super cute.

Pigsmightfly212 · 04/02/2020 12:07

Yes, I love it. Especially spelt with an "e".
I agree with Anne of Green Gables on that one!

beanaseireann · 04/02/2020 19:32

I prefer Ann to Anne but Anna is far nicer.

PepePig · 04/02/2020 19:43

I don't like Ann/Anne. Sounds quite boring and bland. Annie or Anna are much nicer imo.

anotherypasswordtoremember · 04/02/2020 20:02

It's funny how much association to existing people blurs our ideas about names.
Would I be right in suggesting that those who strongly dislike the name Anne know one they don't like very much?
With the unusual names people don't have preconceptions.
My mil is called Anne but we call her Annie. I think it's a sweet name.
But I don't know any awful Anne's.

SlippersAndThePaper · 04/02/2020 21:41

Boring.

Anna is nice.

mogtheexcellent · 04/02/2020 21:52

Love it. Was on my list. Nice and simple to go with our ridiculous surname. We went for Emma in the end though.

bananafritters · 04/02/2020 21:52

I like Anne/Annie and Anya as a PP posted, really not keen on Anna but that's just because I knew one I didn't like at school

Yehdivvy · 05/02/2020 05:43

Anna, Annabelle or Anya

Cookit · 05/02/2020 06:38

I do quite like it.

Perhaps weirdly (?) I feel very strongly that Anne is nice enough but that Ann is terribly dull even though they’re pronounced the same. Ann just feels unfinished and all the “famous” Annes and Anne I think anyway?

I do prefer Anna, Anya and Annie though although I’m not sure I would call someone Annie or not as it’s a nickname. I’ve gone round the Annie question in my head a few times now!

mathanxiety · 05/02/2020 06:53

Beautiful, a true classic, and I love Annie as a pet name.

@midsomermurderess YYY to 'the preposterous Ottilie' Smile

spiderlight · 05/02/2020 13:07

I'm an Ann and I've always hated it, sorry! Too short, boring, and when I was growing up it was everyone's mum's name or middle name. I've always wished I were an Anna instead - much prettier.

beanaseireann · 05/02/2020 20:52

How about Annick ?

Hypergear · 14/02/2020 21:44

Don't like it.. Dull and harsh sounding

Kolarola · 15/02/2020 16:49

Very dull imo sorry.

aprilfools19 · 19/02/2020 04:21

I never would’ve even coalnwidered it but I’ve been a big fan of anne Hathaway for years so now when I hear it I just think of her! And she’s so gorgeous intelligent and classy. Definitely due a comeback but if you really hate Annie it may not be the best choice as her friends will almost inevitably nn her that

aprilfools19 · 19/02/2020 05:42

Wow that meant to say considered haha

HeronLanyon · 19/02/2020 06:13

I like it a lot.
Like Ann more than Anne weirdly. Love Anna.

CatteStreet · 19/02/2020 06:23

I like it, it's strong and clear and unfussy and really stands out today - but like Anne of Green Gables (and several PPs), I only like it with an 'e'. I've always liked Anna a lot, too.

Perhaps surprisingly, it doesn't necessarily travel well. Over here in Germany you would invariably get either 'Ann-uh' (which I think is fine) or (from people who know you are English-speaking) 'Enn'.

CatteStreet · 19/02/2020 06:25

I have never understood how Ottilie has become popular in the UK. It's an 18th/19th-century German name and hasn't made a comeback here in old lady chic, despite masses of Idas and Gretas and Lottes. And I suspect some Brits are saying it Otterly with the emphasis on the first syllable rather than Ottilyuh with the emphasis in the middle.

Poorolddaddypig · 19/02/2020 16:02

Love Annie, like Anna, dislike Anne. Very meh.

Nowayorhighway · 19/02/2020 16:19

I think it’s had its day tbh, it’s dated and dull.

hannahfaith · 19/02/2020 23:27

I think it's sweet and agree it's due for a comeback. I like with the e (Anne) and as pp mentioned it's a literary and historical name with a lot of great Anne's in the past

Rootd · 19/02/2020 23:47

Love it. Strong and classic. Anne with an E for me.

Liddell · 19/02/2020 23:53

I prefer Anna
