Lyra?

Lyra is my DHs favourite girls name because of the Phillip Pullman books he loved growing up... However I'm worried about its growing popularity. I have a really common first name (there were 5 of us with the same name in a year group of 120 at school) and I hated having the same name as everyone else (although this may just be my own issue!) Grin
What do you all think? Is it becoming as popular as I imagine?? Should this even be a reason to not add it to our list if my DH loves it (and I quite like it)?

We don't even know if we're having a girl, but should I add it to our shortlist?

Put it on your list. It's popular, but there are only so many names and the constant search for an unusual but not made up name is getting ridiculous IMO.

Justmuddlingalong · 31/01/2020 20:19

That reads really snippy, but wasn't meant that way. Sorry.

WaterSheep · 31/01/2020 20:19

Lyra will definitely see a surge in popularity due to the recent BBC drama and the current book of dust trilogy.

I will say that the Lyra in the dark material trilogy is a very different Lyra to the one presented in The Secret Commonwealth. So if he likes the name because of the original trilogy, he might reconsider after reading the newer books.

AhNowTed · 31/01/2020 20:20

Lovely name.

Mumofone87 · 31/01/2020 20:21

I love the name, like your DH, loved it since I first read His Dark Materials years ago. It’s definitely on my list for a girl, regardless of the tv series.

noitsachicken · 31/01/2020 20:22

I love it and considered it for DD, but husband not keen.
I don’t know any, but have heard more Lila, Mila, Mira, Lara etc

Betacarotene · 31/01/2020 20:26

I have one and I have had a number of people tell me they know one, but not actually met another.

Don't know if this will influence your decision, but it is actually quite hard for a toddler to say. She has gone from "Waiya" to "Riya" to "Ryra" over the past year, and her nursery friends all call her RaaRaa.

To be fair she can't say any of their names. I know of Dayday (Jaiden) and Moh-dee (Melody) and the rest I just guess.

ladybee28 · 31/01/2020 20:35

I know 3 Lyras – never heard it outside of His Dark Materials before, and suddenly they're popping up everywhere.

I wouldn't choose it myself, but it's nice enough, and if your DH loves it and you like, it shouldn't matter how popular it's becoming. Your daughter might LOVE having the same name as other people... sometimes apples fall a long way from the tree! Grin

Strugglingtoquit · 31/01/2020 20:41

I like it (love the books!), I only know one who is 10.

With the tv series and the Book of Dust series, it is becoming more popular than it was, but I don’t think it’s “popular popular”.

doritosdip · 31/01/2020 20:42

I don't think there will be more than 2 Lyra in a class but it could be like Ava/Evie/Eva/Eve/Ada and be amongst similar names Lila (Lie-la), Skylar, Maya (Ma-ya) ,Myra (My-ra) Etc

HeronLanyon · 31/01/2020 20:42

justmuddlingalong fwiw I didn’t think your first was snippy at all !
I like the name and know a couple of 3-4 year olds called Lyra.
Congrats op.

Pipandmum · 31/01/2020 20:44

I know a couple Lyras, both about two.

PinkFlamingo888 · 01/02/2020 07:25

This is also my boyfriend’s favourite girls name for the same reason. It’s not at the top of my list but I probably would compromise and have it as it is nice and inoffensive. My only issue is that my family is already full of Laras, Lauras, Leias etc but I guess what’s one more in the mix!? 😂

Whatsyourflava · 01/02/2020 10:30

Really nice name. Not met one yet

TatianaLarina · 01/02/2020 11:26

I think it’s pretty. It’s hard to say how many there will be in the future.

At least it’s not Eve/ie/Ava, Lily/Lila, Ella/ie, Grace, Sophie/a, Rose/ie.

Marahute · 01/02/2020 11:34

I like Lyra. I know one baby Lyra, who was named after the HDM heroine. It was going to be on my list, but DH vetoed.

Maduixa · 01/02/2020 14:22

I say, add it to the short list - you're going to vet the list again (probably multiple times) before deciding on a name. Putting it on just means you both like it and will want to remember and reconsider it when you're finally choosing a name.

Then again - I have a "short list" with almost 50 names on it, so what do I know : )

KatherineJaneway · 01/02/2020 14:23

Sounds too much like 'liar' to me.

user1493494961 · 01/02/2020 15:16

Not keen and there's loads of this type of name, every other girl is a Lila, Lola, Luna and now Lyra is added to the mix.

Triantracks · 01/02/2020 17:29

Personally I find it really naff. Leave it in the book as a character.

NameChange30 · 01/02/2020 17:32

I love it! Even though it's becoming more popular I don't think it will be in the top 10 or even 20.

Grandmi · 01/02/2020 17:34

Not keen,reminds me of Lycra.

BethanyGilbert · 01/02/2020 20:48

I know sisters Lyra and Amber. That can’t be a coincidence?

IslayBrigid · 04/02/2020 13:59

Lyra is on my list as a possible girls name coz I loved HDM, but I didn't really like the BBC adaptation so much, so it's put me off a little... I'm thinking of having it as a middle name or going with something else... I do think it's going to get more popular!
Lilah is similar, and classic feminine names like Cora, Willa, Cordelia could work well instead! x

Yehdivvy · 05/02/2020 05:42

Lara or Laura
